Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

PMK with Newsthump's interpretation of Boris's border in NI. It's a truly pragmatic theory with real practical implementations that solves all of our problems much better than a magical technological fix. newsthump.com/2019/10/02/government-proposes-schrodingers-irish-border-which-exists-when-you-want-sovereignty-and-doesnt-exist-when-you-want-frictionless-trade/

bellinisurge · 03/10/2019 20:08

I suspect @Ellie56 , that due to economies of scale, it's cheaper.
And the lamb we import from NZ is via the EU's deal with NZ. There are quotas per country and , if I am right, NZ is unhappy with the idea of selling the same amount to us post-Brexit. It's Deal us with the EU and it wants to sell to that market.

ListeningQuietly · 03/10/2019 20:09

This may be a very silly question but why do we export our lamb to the EU and then import more lamb from NZ?
Different cuts of meat ......

same as China buys the trotters off 90% of the slaughtered pigs in the world

and did you see the programme the other night that Brits eat small apples so large ones are exported to the middle east - who like big apples

MockersthefeMANist · 03/10/2019 20:11

There was the famous case of an NHS hospital in Wales that was tied to catering contracts that only used NZ lamb when there were Welsh wooly items in the field outside the windows.

It's partly fresh vs frozen. Fresh lamb is a premium product whereas the cheaper frozen stuff goes into shepherds pies and burgers. It's also about regularity and reliability of supply.

tobee · 03/10/2019 20:11

I always thought it was because of the seasons being at different times of the year; summer being NZ winter and vice versa when lamb meat comes into season. Presumably I'm wrong? ConfusedBlush

DarkAtEndOfUk · 03/10/2019 20:12

I found this old blog entry which describes the different cuts of meat and seasonal nature of UK demand for sheep products, @Ellie56. Hope its useful. beefandlambmatters.blogspot.com/2013/07/why-uk-imports-lamb-from-new-zealand.html

ListeningQuietly · 03/10/2019 20:13

tobee
Yup, the prime British lamb season is half the year and nZ the other half
BUT
with the modern chill methods and new breeds and more mutton being sold, I've not bought NZ in yonks

Grinchly · 03/10/2019 20:15

I think it's also something to do with preferred cuts. French and Spanish people enjoy the bits we Brits turn our noses up at. So there is a need for more legs etc. I think . Blush

JP19 · 03/10/2019 20:18

It seems that the PM doesn't think that we will leave the EU until there has been a GE, according to the attached email from BJ sent out immediately after his conference speech. That is unlikely to happen before the 31st Oct. If we are leaving whatever on 31st Oct, the email makes no sense

Thanks for all the speedy replies from so many helpful posters. It all makes perfect sense now. Smile

From the Newsthump article:
The government expects the suggestion to be warmly received by the European Union, which similarly exists in two states at once depending on who is speaking; one where it is so weak it desperately needs British money and another where it is powerful enough to bully Britain.

From the Umberto Eco essay:

The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.

WWN bang on the money.

PSNI were never going to make themselves target practice, good to hear the new chief stating it clearly.

For those even vaguely curious - I had a response from Dmitry (the trade guru) about my CE nightmare. He reckons CE will continue for all things even in the case of no-deal for a transitional period, until someone can organise the UK regulatory bodies. So that’s reassuring! Thanks for the suggestion to contact him (he produced links to all sorts of obscure paragraphs) what a great person

Glad your mind has been put at rest import.

Dimitry is great I follow him on Twitter he’s answered a few things for me about work too.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2019 20:52

That's excellent news, import
His tweets are brilliant and he has a lovely dog

ListeningQuietly · 03/10/2019 20:55

Good to know that there will be some common sense away from the politicians

What we all think about Getting Brexit done’.

No real surprises. Leavers kern to be gone on 31/10/19. Remainers not so despite what Johnson would have us believe.

Peregrina · 03/10/2019 21:33

I would like to Get Brexit Done with by revoking.

HesterThrale · 03/10/2019 21:36

Interesting. Wonder what they were up to? Jessica Simor QC:

British Government "colluding with foreign powers" to undermine the will of the British people as expressed by their representatives in Parliament? And that is not even to mention the kind of foreign government HMG is apparently engaging with....
