Jasjas1973 - My husband's job will be more secure.

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:15

The nhs has never done brilliantly, why did we have to suffer it doing "worse"?

Ohflippineck · 18/09/2019 20:17

It will be an whole heap worse if the European workers up and leave. They will be replaced eventually from immigrants from other countries but that will take time. How many prematurely dead or inadequately treated people will you be happy with in the interim period, for the sake of your “sovereignty”?

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:18

Oh flippin, all immigration benefits any country in any number of ways.
However only when that immigration is specific, filling jobs that are needed.

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:19

"How many prematurely dead or inadequately treated people will you be happy with in the interim period"

This has already happened back in 2006/7 etc when hospitals went under.

Ohflippineck · 18/09/2019 20:20

If you say so 🙄

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:21

Its not my say so at all, its facts.

jasjas1973 · 18/09/2019 20:24

Never

NHS funding is consistently 1 to 2% below the EU average, we have also seen a collapse in social care and increases in diseases like Diabetes These are the reasons the NHS is "worse"

On top of all this, we've had significant real terms cuts since 2010.

So, Cornwall and Devon have little eu migration, yet Truro and Plymouth hospitals have regularly been put into emergency measures.

Govt under funding is the cause.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 18/09/2019 20:25

“How can we trust our politicians to put UK citizens first when we are in the eu.“

Haha at the idea that our politicians can be trusted to put UK citizens first when we are outside the EU. They have always had the opportunity to deal with “problems” that people perceive with EU membership - successive govts have chosen not to. They have always blamed their failings on things within their power to change domestically, but have blamed the EU instead. I prefer to put my trust in the EU tbh rather than let an increasingly hardline right-wing authoritarian govt run riot with our country, cheered on by the very people they despise

Lex234 · 18/09/2019 20:26

Head currently spinning at this utter shit show of a constitutional crisis being justified on the premise of the seasonality of fruit.

Fruit.

Spanish strawberries. All bastards.

Ffs.

I have friends in Eastern Europe. They can’t find local builders for love or money, nor cleaning ladies in the tourism business, because most of them have emigrated to other Eu countries when their country joined the 27. But with them, they lost also most of their engineers and doctors.
They’re now receiving immigration from the Philippines and China. I had never seen a Chinese there before, and I’ve been visiting 23 years.
So to all the people worried about immigration...find something more worthwhile to worry about. This is pointless. It’s a global world. People move. People have always moved, by Jove, Romans came on foot! (Well, on boat and on foot I suppose). In case nobody told you yet...we are all equal, you know. Accents, colours, hair texture, religious practices are only details. You can fight the idea of migration but you’ll lose. And I warmly wish, with all my heart, that your kids will fall in love with someone “foreigner” and actually see the world. There is really nothing to be scared of....

Mamamia456 · 18/09/2019 20:29

Ohflipping - FOM only works if all the countries involved have similar wages, otherwise it's very much one way. There are poor countries in the EU whose wages are so much lower than here so no one will want to go over there and work.

My husband works in the Construction industry and that has been badly affected by immigration bringing wages down. Can you not remember all the protests about British jobs for British workers. Immigration has to be controlled. You can't have thousands of Europeans coming to work here for a really low wage, because it's still more than they would get in their country, and then British workers are forced out of work and having to claim benefits, That is what happened in the Construction Industry.

wonkylegs · 18/09/2019 20:30

My foreign shares have gone up in value unfortunately they've be balanced out by the fall in the British ones

expatinspain · 18/09/2019 20:31

I'm sure mine will be harder as I live in the EU.

ragged · 18/09/2019 20:32

I thought loads of British builders went to work in Germany in late 80s, early 90s, coz the wages were so much better over there, esp. when the construction industry in UK stalled badly for yrs.

I guess the builders don't mind not having that overseas work option in next UK recession.

daisypond · 18/09/2019 20:34

One of my adult children has a job offer in Eastern Europe and is desperate to take it up. I am shocked by the idea that some think “no one will want to go there and work”.

Parker231 · 18/09/2019 20:36

@Neveragain21 - Migrants from the eastern European countries that joined the EU after 2004 are more likely to be working than any other group in Britain. This is partly because they tend to be younger and live in the UK without family responsibilities. But even taking account of these differences, eastern European migrants have a higher employment rate than those born in Britain.

We need freedom of movement as a basis for developing the economy.

DH and I are probably leaving the UK (me Belgian and DH Canadian). I’ve been here since I was five and DH since he was 21. Our DC’s were born here. We haven’t taken British citizenship but have indefinite leave to remain. Britain is no longer a country we want to live in. DH is a GP and if leave the practice will close as the other doctors are also planning to move from the UK and there is a shortage of GP’s with no one to take it over. The patients will have to find another practice which will increase the time people will have to wait for an appointment.

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:38

So to all the people worried about immigration...find something more worthwhile to worry about. This is pointless. It’s a global world. People move. People have always moved

Of course they have, my own family is from all over the globe. However it should be up to each country to decide who moves into their country should they wish to.

"I prefer to put my trust in the EU tbh rather than let an increasingly hardline right-wing authoritarian govt run riot with our country, cheered on by the very people they despise"

The tone of the EU is turning towards the right. The latest quotes are about Empires, defending an EU way of life, being hard on genuine refugees.
Also many EU officials have dubious backgrounds to say the least. Why would you put your trust in them.

Nonnymum · 18/09/2019 20:39

It won't be better it will be worse. I cant think of one thing that will. Improve.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 18/09/2019 20:39

People wanting to come and live and work in your country is a signal of its success. It does seem as though some Brexiteers are willing to see the UK become so shit that no one wants to come here in their quest to avoid immigrants

wonkylegs · 18/09/2019 20:41

@Mamamia456
The British construction industry has problems mainly because we've been shit at training a replacement workforce
There are not enough skilled workers in the industry at the moment and we've had problems with this for more than a decade, (in fact it was being banged on about before the last recession) they are also not valued in a culture that's all about money not quality.

A culture at the top of construction for creaming off profits for shareholders and failing to invest in a workforce coupled with a move away from hands on education choices to 'university'. It's not really to do with FOM more a change in culture in the industry.
Any negative impact on our economy will have an almost immediate and noticeable effect on the industry because the first thing people cut when they are feeling the pinch is construction, this has been seen time and time again.

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:42

Migrants from the eastern European countries that joined the EU after 2004 are more likely to be working than any other group in Britain.

I don't doubt that. But they are not necessarily all working in jobs that we need them too. The flip side is that we have had EU immigrants who are homeless and live on the streets.

I simply want an immigration system based on need from all over. I can see the benefits of EU membership to smaller EU countries, it makes sense in many ways for FOM and no borders. But it has not worked in the UK .

jasjas1973 · 18/09/2019 20:42

Mana

You need to do a bit more research before you post BXP propaganda! huge shortages in construction skills across all sectors.

Do a quick google...also my friends partner works in construction, can name his own price, anyone tried to get a local builder?

Neveragain21 · 18/09/2019 20:44

Her symphony, thats not entirely true. Many immigrants know and speak English or have strong ties to the country, through previous migration.

Also we have a very loose open economy where people cannot be tracked.

LaurieMarlow · 18/09/2019 20:44

Uk construction workers should come to Ireland where the industry is booming and workers can earn a small fortune.

Oh wait, now that you’re leaving, you can’t.

The Polish builders are great anyway.
