Westminstenders: "I don't give a flying flamingo"

Amid scenes parliament was shut down.

In an unprecedented comment the Speaker, stated it was not an ordinary prorogation and it was blatantly an attempt to stop the executive being held to account.

And now it seems a Scottish Court agree with him:
"Lord Brodie cont: "the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference"

Thus parliament must reopen. Unless the decision is overturned in a higher court.

This is constitutionally a big deal. The Queen is highly unlikely to attend a reopening, especially in this manner, due to how political it now is.

General Election campaigning has already began with parties trying to take full advantage of the fact that there are currently no rules over spending.

Dominic Cummings actively and openly campaigning for the Conservatives whilst paid as a civil servant by the tax payer is a huge breech of the Civil service code but MPs are struggling to pin the government down on this as its being obstructive.

Cummings is keen to use data to target and personalise people based on their usage of the .gov portal for Brexit. This is OK as its in the national interest apparently. Its also incredibly sinister and concerning about how this could be used against the population.

Anyway if you thought parliament closing would result in a lull in events you were very much mistaken!!

What next?

But is the last digit of your registration a Z rather than a 2, poulet ? Are they wanting to make the problem "go away" by you changing the inconvenient facts? Confused

Basilpots · 12/09/2019 10:57

It comes down to trust.

Do I trust this Government has the capabilities to negotiate its way through a no deal Brexit with it’s populations best interest at heart ?

Songsofexperience · 12/09/2019 11:01

Trust them to act in our interests??
Ha I'd have more trust in pirates off the coast of Somalia!

Sostenueto · 12/09/2019 11:01

Absolutely no Basil

LunarSea · 12/09/2019 11:03

On a lighter note John Bercow's "I don't give a flying flamingo" might just have entered the vernacular. I overhead it used twice yesterday by different people.

Sostenueto · 12/09/2019 11:06

So many people on the ' Jeremy Vine' show in denial about yellowhammer. One bloke rang in and said yellowhammer is scaremongering by remainers!Shock

Are we ever going to convince people that you should be a bit concerned by it? Not outright panic but at least consider whether these things could really happen?

Bearbehind · 12/09/2019 11:09

Nope

That’s why I think the only option now is to go through with no deal and make it a reality.

Then back peddle as quickly as possible to get out of the mess

Even the WA route is going to end up back here as too many people are convinced leaving will be fine and dandy.

Sostenueto · 12/09/2019 11:10

Love Berkow, full of wit and humour and aplomb! He will be sorely missed and Parliament will be miserable without him.Sad

OublietteBravo · 12/09/2019 11:10

Best case is that sanity prevails and we get a softer Brexit - the FOM that means so much to many Remainers won't actually affect importing meds

FoM is a necessary consequence of being in the SM. You can’t have access the the SM unless you are signed up to the 4 freedoms (free movement of people, goods, services and currency). Whilst it might be theoretically possible to have FoM without SM, I highly doubt that this would happen in practice. Surely anyone in favour of FoM is also in favour of SM (especially remainers in favour of FoM)? So FoM most likely goes hand in hand with SM, which will allow import of medicines.

It’s really a subset of leavers who don’t want FoM - even if that means losing access to SM. I don’t think there is a subset of remainers who want FoM without SM access.

You know sos ultimately respect is something one can lose. If those thickos keep defending the indefensible then honestly they've lost my respect. I've always made a big difference between leavers and no dealers. I've engaged and discussed with the former, couldn't give a flying flamingo about the latter. They can FO for all I care. Their opinion and whether or not they change is just noise to me.

Sostenueto · 12/09/2019 11:12

Such an absurb situation for a country to be in. Sad

Are we ever going to convince people that you should be a bit concerned by it?

How would you go about convincing a Catholic to be Protestant ?

Or vice-versa ?

You'll never reach some people and it's a waste of time and effort trying. Besides, who gives a shiny shit what people think. It's how they vote that matters. It's not rocket science to take some numbers and work out that for all the frothing, not every phone-in caller could have voted. And one thing which is fairly constant is that people who tend not to vote tend not to vote. To one thing Farage did do - briefly - was to tap into that demographic long enough to scare the Tories. But I've long suspected it was a flash in the pan.

Brexiteers are paradigms of NPD (a subject I learned from MN and is one of the reasons I first found it ....) and should be treated as such.

Nick Cohen @NickCohen4
EU sources on Labour: "“They want us to negotiate a ‘credible’ deal and then they will campaign against it? That is mad. How can we negotiate with people like that? Their divisions and magical thinking are as bad as anything the Conservatives produced.”

Dominic Casciani @BBCDomC
Boris Johnson's denial about lying to The Queen ducks a key point in the prorogation court cases. The process she is required to follow to shut down Parliament, on his advice, does not necessarily require the PM to fully disclose the totality of his thinking.

This is one of the fundamental issues for the Supreme Court next week. It's undeniable that PMs have executive (prerogative) power to advise The Queen to prorogue Parliament. But did Johnson need to spell out his reasons & can judges intervene in that political consideration?

Songsofexperience · 12/09/2019 11:28

Slight derail but does anyone else find Johnson's repeated use of the word 'friends' when talking about the E27 slightly creepy?
I mean, with friends like him who needs enemies?

yolofish · 12/09/2019 11:31

songs yes to creepiness of 'friends'!

Cherrypi · 12/09/2019 11:31

The phone in frothers often end with the phrase I'm never voting again.

Songsofexperience · 12/09/2019 11:32

To which I say brilliant, thank you! 😂

Alsohuman · 12/09/2019 11:41

Let’s hope they mean it.

prettybird · 12/09/2019 11:42

BJ-Cummings says he didn't lie to the Queen.
