Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

Indeed pretzels

And there would surely then have to be a new/referendum confirmatory vote after so much time elapsed.

JeSuisPoulet · 09/09/2019 14:52

My confusion comes as to whether No Dealers see that if LD were elected in next GE on a manifesto of revoke, that that would be more recent democracy than theirs? I'm not sure if that would work and it does seem unlikely to happen with current polls (not that I'm trusting those).

FoldyRoll · 09/09/2019 14:56

Not RTFT yet but Ed Vaizey on Sky news now ruling out a Lib/Lab pact because Labour is a Brexit party. He just predicted LDs could be biggest party after GE. Head/desk. These fools are playing right in to the No Dealer's hands. Angry

QueenOfThorns · 09/09/2019 14:58

I would kiss Macron if that were the case.

To be honest, I would put Macron fairly near the top of my ‘World Leaders I Would Kiss Without Needing An Excuse’ list. After Trudeau, obviously.

Basilpots · 09/09/2019 14:58

in Labour-Tory marginals, Ldems & Greens need to stand down

That would be my constituency.

I’m in two minds it was a red/blue choice in the locals it was frustrating not to have any alternatives on offer and ultimately people just stayed at home.

At least with Lib Dem/greens It’s a vehicle for a ‘protest’ and these parties do have supporters who want to vote for them.

As long as BXP stands it would balance it out.

It’s a tough one.

Leavers won't accept a long exension if Remainers keep talking about using it to get Remain

The EU currently see it as the Uk deciding how to Leave

Which is why increasing to a 5-year extendable transition in the WA might be an alternative

  • because we would have Brexited, but have some years to decide the next steps, while still enjoying all EU benefits excep voting

He just predicted LDs could be biggest party after GE.

I think that's unlikely, although I would like to see the fantasy I have already mentioned playing out of LibDem, Labour and Johnson Tories on the same share of the vote at 175 each, SNP on 50, and new to my predictions 'One Nation Tories, 50, with the remainder of seats being made up of PC, Independents, so that no one party could easily form a Government, and we would have to have a Government of National Unity. Also for Johnson to lose his seat.

Basilpots · 09/09/2019 15:12

@flouncyfanny

Fortunately I am nowhere near as marginal as you and I have a wannabe ERGer in situ so I won’t be getting any visits from Nigel.

Where I work however Labour marginal BXP have been busy canvassing in town centre recently.

Basilpots · 09/09/2019 15:13

He just predicted LDs could be biggest party after GE.

Or he could facilitate a Tory/BXP win if they get it wrong.

Peregrina · 09/09/2019 15:18

Vaizey's majority in Wantage was so huge, that even if he as an Independent Tory and a Johnson Tory stood, he could still win, although of course, both Labour and LD fancy their chances.

Kay Burley frequently shakes the hand of the person she has been interviewing Confused. Dh and I commented on exactly that last week Confused - that she always shows courtesy even to twats Wink

pumkinspicetime · 09/09/2019 15:20

"I’m not sure Jo Swinson has thought through standing down against Tories who are pro-Brexit, just against no deal, while standing in Labour-Tory marginals where Labour is pro-referendum and against Brexit.

I see that logically this makes little sense but I think it comes down to trust.
She trusts these Tories to do what they say and she doesn't have the same faith in Labour.
Given they appear to de trying to deselect Kier Starmer et al I can't say I blame her.

nothingwittyhere · 09/09/2019 15:20

Does anyone know when the Benn Bill is getting its Royal Assent? Could the government pull a fast one and porogue before Assent is granted? Or is Assent locked in now?
Thanks!

Theyre not

nothingwittyhere · 09/09/2019 15:33

Ok, ignore my query, I see it's now got its Royal Assent! And obviously I meant prorogue, not porogue.

Belindabelle · 09/09/2019 15:35

Sally Bercow in the gallery. Rumour has it the Speaker may be up to something.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 09/09/2019 15:37

The thing about the Rory Stewart pact. The Greens have actively denied it. The Lib Dem's have announced their candidate who either hasn't been told yet, or you know, The Times May have the story wrong on both counts

Belindabelle · 09/09/2019 15:38

Resigning
