Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

I'd like to thank Sostenueto for her recent posts

I have difficult circs ongoing re appropriate educational provision for my kids with ASD. This has led to me not being able to work (and the Govt allowing me £66 p/w Carers allowance to look after one child whose needs are assessed as High by the DLA) and so it is personally hard not to stagger from one educational / financial crisis to another.

BUT: I think Sos's words about staying calm and remembering not to let worry overwhelm you and appreciating the joyful moments too are important for everyone, however Brexit is affecting you and however you choose / are able to respond. This extended runaway train / crash is being done to all of us, however we originally voted.

NotaRealLawyer I was about to show off we have enough nectar points for an Easyjet flight (how we usually pay for our summer holiday flights) but DH says they don't accept them anymore Sad
Makes escaping the UK a tiny bit harder Grin

BackinTime me too, I used to have all sorts of Remain/PV hopes now I will just be happy if all of my family get to live in the same country and are entitled to public services.

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 09:28

aroomwithoutadoorFlowers and hugs.

yolofish · 09/09/2019 09:31

I found myself thinking of John Major with nostalgia and faint affection this morning. Remember when politics and politicians were boring?

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 09:38

@prettybird they look brilliant. Well done. We have sloe gin from last year sloes that we discovered on a shrub near a local factory , obviously planted as part of a new access road project. Must wander over there again this year after the first frost .....

AutumnCrow · 09/09/2019 09:40

What does 'a bit of ginger stuck up his arse' mean?? (Soames on JRM.)

ARoomWithoutADoor · 09/09/2019 09:41

Thanks, Sostenueto
(sorry all, I am forever bleating about my tough life on here :(

But I do think your words are really important.
There is SUCH an attempt to 'divide and rule' going on, for years now.
We must not let that divide us. We are all just people, doing our best in now frightening circs (no one knows where the country / economy is going and we are all just one bad accident away from being vulnerable in some way, even if we have a bit of a financial cushion)

DadDadDad · 09/09/2019 09:44

yolofish - it's a bit like a few years ago after Trump was elected, seeing George W Bush on a chatshow, and suddenly appreciating what a charming and modest man he appeared to be. (Even if it was an act, it was a refreshing contrast to Trump's need to be the best person in the room).

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 09:44

autumncrow ginger is hot so blowing off hot air/wind is one interpretation which is probably wrong but funnyGrin

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 09:47

Leo isn't giving an inch in that speech.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 09/09/2019 09:47

prettybird there's a fruitcake to be proud of :)
I may have to get baking later. I adore fruitcake.

so now he's a haunted pencil who ejaculates dust with ginger up his bottom? Grin like the snobbery of the 'moderately cut suit'
but wasn't it Soames who was really misogynistically vile about Princess Diana back in the day? not a nice specimen either

I did read somewhere that Jess Phillips personally likes JRM though?
Shock

FMFL · 09/09/2019 09:48

@Sos @AutumnCrow I think horse rustlers back in the day would pop a piece of ginger up an old horse’s backside when selling/hiring to make it look as though the horse was lively and raring to go?!

DGRossetti · 09/09/2019 09:48

What does 'a bit of ginger stuck up his arse' mean??

I believe it's a horse trading expression - a way to make an old nag look lively and frisky for sale (if "OI" were right Grin)

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 09:52

Leo also pointed out that 31st of October or 31st Jan is not the end of Brexit, just the beginning.

Hazardtired · 09/09/2019 09:53

mojo

Sorry your meds are listed - do you have funds for online pharmacy as a back up? Your a little star for finding a list!

QueenOfThorns · 09/09/2019 09:54

I did read somewhere that Jess Phillips personally likes JRM though?

I always used to find him entertaining on HIGNFY Blush

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 09:55

Boris didn't say anything other than he wants a deal and believes one can be done. Irish journalist asking when we can see the actual proposals.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 09:58

Boris says trusted trader agreements and electronic clearance, regulatory alignment on agri foods. Apparently. Nothing new.

Cherrypi · 09/09/2019 09:58

Johnson managing to string a sentence together today at least.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 09:59

Now he's saying that other EU members have been asking him how he's getting on with his Irish friends...

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 10:01

Boris - Brexit negotiations and discussions have been going on far too long and they want an end to it and I want an end to it and we need to come out on Oct 31st, that's what the people of the UK want.

DGRossetti · 09/09/2019 10:04

Has anyone told the Brexiteers that 2019-2020 storm names are now British, Irish and Dutch ?

www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/press-office/news/weather-and-climate/2019/storm-names-for-2019-20-announced

First introduced by the Met Office and Met Éireann (the meteorological service in the Republic of Ireland) in 2015, the Name our Storms campaign has helped raise awareness of the potential impacts of severe weather in Britain and Ireland before it hits. Now in its fifth year, Met Office and Met Éireann are joined by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), the Dutch national weather forecasting service.

("B" is for Brendan, not "Brexit" ....)

NotaRealLawyer · 09/09/2019 10:05

@Apileofballyhoo Following, thanks.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 09/09/2019 10:05

the cognitive dissonance involved in liking/ admiring/ even finding attractive a person whose views / behaviour you are aware that you also actively dislike is interesting, isnt it?

the psychology of personality (ie if TM, BoJo, Cameron, Blair, Major etc all presented the same 'deal' to Parliament / the public they would get very different responses.

wheresmymojo · 09/09/2019 10:06

Just about to take off to Mallorca but here is the meds list.

It IS NOT the official Govt list which has not been provided to the public but the article before the list explains how they have arrived at it:
