Westminstenders: Drain The Swamp

Johnson lost his first vote by 27.

The Commons take control again, and Johnson is now, with his majority gone, is seeking an election.

Whilst the feeling might be one of victory there is a definite sting in the tail.

Johnson has purged the party of 'trouble makers', meaning any replacements after an election are hard liners. And they will be in safe seats. Possibly many of which will be careerists parachuted in.

The party has split. The civil war is over.

Parliament has just lost some of its very best minds in the process. That bodes ill for us all in the long term. The polarisation has just jacked up a level. The centre has fallen even more.

There are no more moderates.

Polling suggests that Johnson won't be blamed for any of this and that's significant.

Take note of this tweet

Douglas Carswell @Douglascarswell
Boris Vs the political Parasites. Guess who wins across suburban Britain?

The optics are not about what you or I are seeing. Nor about what any of the politicial pundits are seeing.

The Democrats and the Media failed to see Trump coming... And this is what now concerns me. His optics are not bad with his core and targets.

Will Johnson be able to have his election?

If yes, I fear the polls look good for Johnson. People want 'Brexit over with' and don't want another extension. They may or may not understand the ramifications of that.

If no, then what? Johnson can do anything with his numbers. Does that mean potentially two governments and the Queen stuck in the middle? Or does he limp on, with no intention of doing anything but take us over the cliff by counting down the clock?

Or something else?

The Brexit Party and Conservatives now seem to have formally united one way or another. They have aligned with current politics alike the divided Opposition parties.

Tonight the penny might have dropped with a few Labour MPs too. They want May's deal to return. Its the only deal there is, in the absence of a Johnson plan and a Labour / Opposition plan. Too little too late...

This isn't going away as an issue either. Stoking up anger against the rebel alliance is a long term project for the fascist right.

Is tonight’s result a victory? Yes, but my fear is its potential to be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The battle today may have been won, but Johnson still looks set to win...

@Cwenthryth The polls, unfortunately, disagree with you at the moment. There are a lot of people who won't vote for Corbyn no matter what, and a lot of people who will believe Boris when he says he can get us a better deal- the conservative party won't campaign for no deal as such.

Also, could be a Brex/Con coalition if Cons don't get a majority.

My understanding is that the govt allowed Kinnock amendment to go through because ministers thought rebels would try and take it out which would activate ping-pong and take up time. But rebels aren't going to take it out. So ruse didn't work.

chomalungma · 04/09/2019 20:26

Did someone just say "Sit down darling?"

FFS

Butterymuffin · 04/09/2019 20:27

Though May's deal includes the backstop, of course, which Johnson has said he won't accept. Would he rather reject that deal in favour of no deal? Surely enough of the ERG and the Labour Remainers would also vote against to kill it for the very last time?

SwedishEdith · 04/09/2019 20:28

Nigel Evans standing up and doing a wrap it up hand gesture.

courderoy · 04/09/2019 20:28

Did someone just say "Sit down darling?"

I heard that too

Butterymuffin · 04/09/2019 20:28

Without Scotland they are basically guaranteed to win huge majorities in every GE

Hasn't this been debunked earlier in the thread?

courderoy · 04/09/2019 20:29

Sorry bold fail.

Parliament annoys me so much

dontcallmelen · 04/09/2019 20:30

Mabby yy post upthread, everyone’s input is valid, I’m nowhere near as informed/articulate as many of the posters, but I care about what has been happening to this country & fear what could become of it/us if this situation plays out as badly as it possibly could, everyone’s views are important & makes us all more able to understand & grasp what is taking place.

Cwenthryth · 04/09/2019 20:30

Did someone just say "Sit down darling?"
No - I heard ‘sit down Nigel’ - I assumed Nigel Evans was on his feet trying to interrupt again, he’d just been very animated a few minutes before

Jo Swindon at least very clear with her thought process - she doesn’t trust BJ not to use timing of GE to engineer an ‘accidental’ no deal.

SansaSnark · 04/09/2019 20:31

I heard the sit down darling too. Along with "big girls blouse" earlier, just shows how misogynistic the Tory party is right now.

courderoy · 04/09/2019 20:32

Thanks Cwenthryth, I might have been expecting the worst of them!

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 20:34

I really clearly heard 'sit down darling,' I think it was Nigel Evans, absolute disgrace.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/09/2019 20:34

Anna Soubry getting up at just the right point there to push pv

Now ids bemoaning corbyn having an afternoon nap. The bloke who picked his nose and ate it live on air.

chomalungma · 04/09/2019 20:35

Rewound it.

Definitely Sit down darling.

I wonder if someone is going to ask Boris what a 'big girl's blouse' is at the next PMQs

@Cwenthryth The polls, unfortunately, disagree with you at the moment. There are a lot of people who won't vote for Corbyn no matter what”

That may change. I was one of those until last night. Can’t bear Corbyn but even I had to admit that he played a bit of a blinder today. Listening to BoZo with his Caracas and chlorinated chicken was the final nail in the coffin. FFS. A caller to the radio today said she was a teacher. Her Year 3 class run around the playground calling each other “cheese head”. Listening to our PM’s performance today had put her in mind of her Year 3s. Summed up the state of our Government perfectly.

For my family, personally, Corbyn’s policies could financially crucify us but the time for personal concerns has passed. At the risk of sounding like a millennial, the MPs who stood up for their principles last night “inspired” (sorry Grin) me. A few challenging years for my nearly retiree husband and I as opposed to tattered futures for a generation - possibly more than one - if the would be dictator in No 10 achieves his ambition can be coped with.

I didn’t vote for this, I voted to remain but more importantly my 16 year old son and his peers didn’t have the chance. For their sakes I realise I have to hold my nose, breathe deeply and vote for Corbyn if it comes to it.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/09/2019 20:39

Jess Phillips in full flow and fury crack on. Love it

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 20:40

Twitter seems to think Kinnock OK. Even remain twitter.

Well those not outraged at dirty tricks at least.
