Westminstenders: Drain The Swamp

Johnson lost his first vote by 27.

The Commons take control again, and Johnson is now, with his majority gone, is seeking an election.

Whilst the feeling might be one of victory there is a definite sting in the tail.

Johnson has purged the party of 'trouble makers', meaning any replacements after an election are hard liners. And they will be in safe seats. Possibly many of which will be careerists parachuted in.

The party has split. The civil war is over.

Parliament has just lost some of its very best minds in the process. That bodes ill for us all in the long term. The polarisation has just jacked up a level. The centre has fallen even more.

There are no more moderates.

Polling suggests that Johnson won't be blamed for any of this and that's significant.

Take note of this tweet

Douglas Carswell @Douglascarswell
Boris Vs the political Parasites. Guess who wins across suburban Britain?

The optics are not about what you or I are seeing. Nor about what any of the politicial pundits are seeing.

The Democrats and the Media failed to see Trump coming... And this is what now concerns me. His optics are not bad with his core and targets.

Will Johnson be able to have his election?

If yes, I fear the polls look good for Johnson. People want 'Brexit over with' and don't want another extension. They may or may not understand the ramifications of that.

If no, then what? Johnson can do anything with his numbers. Does that mean potentially two governments and the Queen stuck in the middle? Or does he limp on, with no intention of doing anything but take us over the cliff by counting down the clock?

Or something else?

The Brexit Party and Conservatives now seem to have formally united one way or another. They have aligned with current politics alike the divided Opposition parties.

Tonight the penny might have dropped with a few Labour MPs too. They want May's deal to return. Its the only deal there is, in the absence of a Johnson plan and a Labour / Opposition plan. Too little too late...

This isn't going away as an issue either. Stoking up anger against the rebel alliance is a long term project for the fascist right.

Is tonight’s result a victory? Yes, but my fear is its potential to be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The battle today may have been won, but Johnson still looks set to win...

I think Kinnock is getting massively ahead of himself.

Testamentritualis · 04/09/2019 20:01

Fuck offff Boris

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 04/09/2019 20:02

Cross post - relieved you think it’s a good thing Red

But what does it mean? They clearly did it deliberately. So does this mean BJ wants the withdrawal agreement? Some sort of face-saving exercise?

chomalungma · 04/09/2019 20:03

Boris getting very annoyed there.

Cwenthryth · 04/09/2019 20:04

I’m lost now, I don’t understand why JC is anti a general election now. It’s all he’s wanted for years 🤯

How does not having a GE make no-deal any less likely at this point?

Myriade · 04/09/2019 20:04

Corbyn wants an election too....

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 20:04

Is the Kinnoch bill basicaly stating that the WA bill has been agreed?!?

No.

It means we can have a vote at the last minute for a deal to avoid no deal.

And seeing as May's WA is the only deal on the table and Johnson hasn't got anything else, its a potential way to an 11th hour reprieve from no deal.

Which there wasn't before. Only options otherwise were remain, extension or no deal. And Johnson isn't going to do the first two.

It's possible it's Johnsons get out of jail free card without admitting it or needing to admit it whilst he gets to talk the hard line talk. He doesn't think he can get his GE before end of Oct which is what he needed. As he doesn't really want to head into a no deal without one.

It gives him an option he didn't have earlier...

Optics. But saving his own neck too.

Because if he loses, there is a good chance we will get No Deal.
There's a chance he will lose - or get a hung Parliament.

Timing is everything

Myriade · 04/09/2019 20:05

Not a good choice from Corbyn imo

prettybird · 04/09/2019 20:05

I'm lost: what happened earlier? Confused

And is Corbyn supporting or not supporting BlowJobCum's call for a GE?

Belindabelle · 04/09/2019 20:05

You tell him Ken.

LyraParry · 04/09/2019 20:06

Am I right in understanding that if this motion passes, BJ can select a day after 31st for a general election and therefore parliament would be unable to prevent No Deal?

MaximusHeadroom · 04/09/2019 20:06

E.g. Corbyn certainly supports a reunited Ireland

If that were a factor in his vote on the WA, it would have made him vote for it, not against it.

The Backstop would align NI closely with ROI and create a customs border between NI and the rest of the UK, thus making a United Ireland easier down the road on a practical front, if not on a political front.

That's why the DUP hate it so much.

chomalungma · 04/09/2019 20:06

Ken Clarke is great. I love hearing him speak.

TatianaLarina · 04/09/2019 20:06

But there's some deep spiritual part of me which feels that this whole thing being resolved by MPs eventually passing May's deal after she'd gone because it slipped through by accident is just absolute peak Brexit

Myriade · 04/09/2019 20:06

Thanks Red its getting very confusing....

SansaSnark · 04/09/2019 20:07

Corbyn is saying the government must ask for an extension if they want an election. Personally, I think that's a sensible position- but I'm not sure it will play well.

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 20:07

Oh Ken Clarke, you star!

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/09/2019 20:08

Ian Blackford has just advised Blowjob to sack Cummings Grin

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 20:08

Long and short of it. Johnson doesn't really want an election immediately after no deal... And things aren't going the way he'd planned it so its forced his hand into skullduggery. Which shows the level of what he is prepared to do.

But personally I don't think it a disaster...

It seems to be quite a United house tonight, against Boris Johnson!

Cwenthryth · 04/09/2019 20:08

Yes, so keeps being said - but why? Why is no deal any more likely after a GE?

MarshaBradyo · 04/09/2019 20:08

Good on you Ken

MaximusHeadroom · 04/09/2019 20:09

Ken Clarke is great. I love hearing him speak.

And it is all off the cuff. He is fantastic. I love how he just scolded BJ and asked him to step up and stop playing games
