I needed a quick dinner, and it turns out that we have eaten ALL of our tuna!! I think it's probably hiding deep in the stash but nevertheless, DH has been despatched to go and get more!

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 21/09/2019 18:42

I've been and checked my mum's stash today and told her she needs to start experimenting with pasta recipes. She relies on meat, veg, and fish for all her dinners so in the absence of meat and fish or price hikes for those, she will really struggle. She only has a small freezer too. I've said autumn is the perfect time to try new recipes but she didn't seem impressed. She needs to replace what she's already used too. She's ok for crackers as she's 5 packs Grin

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/09/2019 20:04

Checking medicine cupboard. Plenty of OTC meds.

Who posted about studies on efficacy of out of date OTC meds.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 21/09/2019 20:08

I could do with knowing the efficacy of out of date (best before May) multivitamins of my mum's. She's a nightmare!

Dontlickthetrolley · 21/09/2019 21:31

I found ibuprofen dated 2007 in an old suitcase a few weeks ago, I decided they were probably well past their usefulness stage!

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/09/2019 21:35

Depends on what it decays to. With food I work on the original length of time given. Eg: a few days and I may eat 1 day late depending on the product. A month, a few days but maybe not a week. Tins with years between manufacture and bbd, may be a couple of months or so. pasta and couscous, years.

Meds, not so sure.

Packed the meds away in date order. I am out of cough meds which I will need for winter. Plenty of ibuprofen for dodgy hips.

Need to reorder inhaler for DD.

CactusAndCacti · 21/09/2019 22:03

I have only just started, it won't be great but it will hopefully be enough to get us some sort of way through the first few weeks.

My last house had an integral garage so I was happy at keeping things in there, this one is a detached but I still have some things in there.

So far I have lots of baked beans, undiluted squash, some bottled water, pasta, I have a double chest freezer so have lots of frozen veg, and some meat (mince etc) some puddings, tinned fruit. I am also stocking up on cleaning stuff and laundry stuff. Loo roll I need to get some more and I am making sure my meds store is stocked up. I have 9 weeks of anti-depressants left, so not a great position to be in, but the surgery won't issue a script before it is due so I am a bit stuck.

I need to consider storage, my house is a good size but no storage. The original garage has been converted and DD is in that as a bedroom - in there is the understairs cupboard and the old toilet, but she is using them for her stuff. Our bed is divan and our wardrobes fitted and the dc all have mid/high sleepers. I can maybe make a bit of extra room in the kitchen cupboards but not much, or I need to be a bit cleverer with how I keep things.

If I had tins in a plastic box could I keep them in the garage? Winter coming up makes it a bit harder.

How can I best store potatoes to stop them going dreadful?

CactusAndCacti · 21/09/2019 22:05

Other people? I swing between concern and 'you reap what you sow'

CactusAndCacti · 21/09/2019 22:07

Oh and toiletries, getting a good stash of all them built up.

I am thinking that there may be some kitchen stuff that I don't really use very often that I could box up and store that in the garage and make more space for food.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/09/2019 22:35

Bottom of wardrobes? Behind kick boards in kitchen? Under sofa? Behind books on the book shelf? Does the bath panel come off? The loft for loo roll?

Top of bookcases? In pretty storage boxes on shelves? Can you fit one of those narrow storage units next to your loo?

Get the kids to find somewhere in their room for their toiletries.

CactusAndCacti · 21/09/2019 22:51

Thank you for the ideas. I will get exploring.

I have discovered though that a can will fit in the wine rack. We have a full height rack in the kitchen but we don't drink yet so actually I have lots of storage room for cans. Means I can keep jars and stuff in the cupboards. I just need to explore all options.

Toiletries are ok, I have space under the sink unit in the downstairs bathroom and have boxes with stuff in, so that takes care of additional toiletries and sanitary protection etc.

I guess it is a case of things all over.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/09/2019 22:57

Someone here filled up their empty suitcases.if high sleepers have furniture underneath, that often does not go all the way back.

With cereal, I put the nearly empty bag in a new box on top of the unopened bag.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/09/2019 23:03

Dried fruit is worth considering as the portion size is only 30g. Nearly 17 portions per bag.

Wolfcub · 22/09/2019 09:00

If you have fitted wardrobes try under the kick boards. I reorganised and rationalised all my baking dishes to make more room but I need to find more space somewhere. I have a plan but zero energy today to put it into practice as it means packing up more of stbexh’s stuff

GoneWishing · 22/09/2019 11:12

I'm trying to think less about all this stuff, since I think I have what I'm going to get for the most. DH got randomly worried if we have enough wine stashed away yesterday, so maybe that's something we'll get more of...

On the meds front: I was tidying what I thought were DH's meds (in various white paper bags from the pharmacy) and found a whole surprise month's worth of most of my prescriptions in there! Shock I have no idea when that's happened (although before my newest meds), but they're all well within date, and I'm using them now. Apart from the newest meds, this gives me a nice extra peace of mind that any delays won't cause instant problems!

My tomatoes are finally producing edible fruit. I'm getting a large container of them every other day at the moment, and they're lovely and sweet and juicy. So far they've just been eaten, though, as they're so good... I will be doing a big patch cooking session of ragu and veggie pasta sauce some day soon, though. Pears are still stubbornly not quite ripe.

New boots ordered for the winter ahead. I've lost some weight, so "had to" buy some new clothes in general, too.

Gingerninja4 · 22/09/2019 17:06

Today I have swung between it be delayed again and oh shit is going to happen and do I have enough and worrying that don't.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/09/2019 17:15

I can't keep doing this stockpiling thing, on and on and on. I keep thinking that if no deal is going to happen, I'd rather it just did, rather than being pushed back and back all the time. I find it too stressful.

But I don't want no deal to happen, so I'd rather it was pushed back in a way. I dunno. I'm conflicted.

thenightsky · 22/09/2019 19:15

Do we really think there will be a shortage of toiletries? I'm working towards stocking up on stuff that runs out when we have big snow as I think that's the best example of what disappears when people panic. Bread making stuff like yeast, flour and UHT milk.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/09/2019 19:23

I totally understand the confliction! I have days of thinking 'I'm sure I don't have enough, yet' and other days of 'what am I doing? This is nuts!' I would really welcome an end to this madness!

CactusAndCacti · 22/09/2019 19:37

I am getting extra toiletries in case they shoot up in price.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/09/2019 19:54

I'm getting toiletries. One less thing to have to go to the shop for if it's chaos.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/09/2019 19:55

Must be the day for wobbling. Also had a wtf am I doing moment or four. And worried about not having enough.

I did find myself hoping it had happened and I knew whether I had done the right thing or not. Which is silly as it not being needed is a win.

In other news, I have been packing away some of the stuff I bought last week.

Need to check the first aid kit thread and top up the medicine cupboard.

bellinisurge · 22/09/2019 20:03

Sorry you are all feeling a bit discombobulated. I get that too, obviously. There are days when I tell myself that an extra packet of hobnobs and a bottle of wine will be all I need. I've actually lived under martial law with a packet of hobnobs , a litre of milk and some weetabix.

You will inevitably forget something or overlook something. You do not need to create a mini Tesco in your home. At the risk of sounding like your Mum , just do your best and what is right for your budget and your equilibrium.

Orangecake123 · 22/09/2019 20:17

My parents aren't taking it seriously either. I stocked up for them whilst I was staying with them in august and got as much as I could in 8 days and I'm now planning my second online shop for them . It's my teenage sisters I care about as our father is very unreliable.

@Cactus I bought a lot of toothpaste, an extra deodorant and sanitary towels, moisturizer, soap, plasters, but also antiseptic liquid.

BishopofBathandWells · 22/09/2019 21:00

We're not doing so bad for tins but freezer space is so limited - a tiny under counter three drawer freezer which is filled after a decent weekly food shop. I'm worried about that. Echo the sentiments of previous posters. If no deal arrives then it's all over - I want it all to be over but my God, I don't want a no deal Brexit. Just wish something would happen.
