People are meeting at College Green (just down the way from Parliament Square) this evening at 5:30 (and on I guess)

Saturday 31st there is a protest outside Downing street at 12pm. See photo.

I'll add any more that I see. Feel free to do the same.

Apologies, Clavinova - I was going by this* and another which I now can't find. The first is from early July, so not as recent as yours! Just looked, do your figures come from ITV Wales?

I think I need to sleep before I comment again. I'm clearly not on the ball today. Grin

*"If there was a new referendum on EU membership in Wales today, the poll commissioned from Beaufort Research by WalesOnline, suggests that Remain would have a 10 percentage point lead over leave."

I've got a bit of time now, while I contemplate my placard Grin

I think that we have to always quote sources of polls if we are going to quote figures from them.

It's three days. Three days.

ListeningQuietly · 29/08/2019 15:52

It's three days. Three days.
It will feel like a lot longer than that if its used to push through a "No Deal" Brexit
of the type that was not on offer in 2016

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 16:02

For those contemplating their first ever demonstrations this weekend - Well done!!! I think it takes courage to do something that you may be a bit nervous about.

I've only really been on London Demos, so can only comment from that perspective but you might be wondering what to take and what it might be like.

So if you are thinking about London specifically:

The weather looks perfect. Mild, a bit gusty (but not unreasonable) for homemade placards, so take lots of tape!

It's not a march, it's a demo. So unless people in the crowd decide to go for a meander between sites it will be mostly standing still, with chants and songs. You don't need to stay the whole time - no one is taking a register! So you can dip out for lunch, have a sit down somewhere, find a loo etc... Everyone who I've spoken to has always commented on the camaraderie at demos. I seem to come out with new friends each time.

Obviously wear comfy shoes and take snacks. I tend to take a spare battery and cable for my phone.

Citymapper is superb for finding your way to places - especially if you are unfamiliar with where you are.

Communication and internet can be a bit tricky if crowds grow dense. Texts work often if whatsapp and messenger are unavailable. Screen shot any maps you want in advance. Arrange fall back meeting points with groups.

Toilets are a bit thin on the ground but I've attached a screen shot of the nearest ones. Don't forget pubs and cafes are happy to help out paying customers. You need a 20p coin at any of the Parks toilets.

If you are worried about safety then my experience has been don't be :) People at these demos seem to be a very moderate bunch of people, especially during the day. I've never seen any trouble. Sometimes you do get Leavers who are there to cause a bit of aggro. If they get that way the police surround them astonishingly quickly. If any of them do get in your face a bit, just treat them like we do trolls here. Blank them. They aren't worth it.

The police are there to protect people and keep things safe. Be polite and be nice to them. The ones wearing light blue are liaison officers and are especially approachable. We have a right to protest.

Most of all, just be proud of yourself for standing up for our democracy. Take placards, whistles, drums, whatever you fancy, come along and peacefully (if noisily) protest :)

Weather wise for saturday, if you are in the north and north west, perhaps think about how you can waterproof any placards. Could be quite wet. It is an improving picture though through the day.

GFS forecast attached. Things may change!

What an overreaction. Remainer hysteria.

Blocking Brexit is anti-democratic.

Extending a parliamentary recess by 4 days is not. Granted it's not ideal but Boris is just doing a Bercow. In other words, using the existing constitutional rules for his political ends. The difference is that a Speaker is supposed to be neutral - a PM, who was elected promising to deliver Brexit by whatever means necessary, is doing as expected.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 16:13

Today's protests (bit late for some, but London will carry on today I'm sure)

@MsMarvellous - I'll probably take my son too.

(ps - is that you Alison?)

Lumene · 29/08/2019 16:20

It's three days. Three days.

Suspending parliament to prevent it doing its democratic duty is wrong full stop. The amount of days is neither here or there.

Lumene · 29/08/2019 16:21

Blocking Brexit is anti-democratic. Extending a parliamentary recess by 4 days is not.

Both would be undemocratic.

Nacreous · 29/08/2019 16:25

Well we are on our way to the protest in Norwich thanks to this thread. My boss even let me leave early to get here.

Good luck to anyone else heading to protests this evening.

MockersthefeMANist · 29/08/2019 16:32

Toilets are a bit thin on the ground

Quite a few free toilets in London including the very busy ones at Covent Garden next to the Transport Museum were closed by can you guess which Mayor?

Anti prorogue demonstrations starting all over the UK.

Extending a parliamentary recess by 4 days is not.

Clearly you are not up to date - other Parliamentary business goes on when the party conferences happen. With Proroguing everything shuts down. That's not for 4 days, that's for a month. Ask yourself whether you would like a Corbyn Government to pull the same trick, for legislation you personally didn't like. If you say you are 100% fine with that then there is no problem. I am sure that you wouldn't be 100% fine.

Peregrina · 29/08/2019 16:37

POLLTAX.
And you know what that did to Thatcher.

It also wrecked the Tory party in Scotland and led to the renewed calls for Independence. Until then Independence had been seen as something that only a small minority wanted.

MsMarvellous · 29/08/2019 16:38

@IamAporcupine I'm afraid I'm not Alison 😂. How will we know each other. Do MNers have a secret signal?

Roussette · 29/08/2019 16:42

Do MNers have a secret signal?

There used to be a very fetching MN scarf back in the day about ten years ago!

ListeningQuietly · 29/08/2019 16:45

Red Tooth Brushes are easy to pop in a button hole Grin

IamAporcupine · 29/08/2019 16:50

@MsMarvellous - good point! We could think of something. Not sure about the tooth brushes though

Lumene · 29/08/2019 16:52

Exactly this:

Ask yourself whether you would like a Corbyn Government to pull the same trick, for legislation you personally didn’t like.

TheBigBallOfOil · 29/08/2019 17:02

I love the “remainer hysteria” crap. The reality being that the biggest whingers and whiners in the country for the last three years have been the pro leavers who have flung their rattles the instant anyone dares to suggest that leaving the most successful trading block the world has ever seen might have, you know, the odd drawback.
Remember “enemies of the people”? Nothing hysterical about that at all? Grin

woman19 · 29/08/2019 17:06

Thank you OYBK great info and advice at 16.02 Nice thing about a march too, is you can just join for a bit, then peel off to look at the sights. No need to do the whole thing. Good walking socks are your friend. Smile
