People are meeting at College Green (just down the way from Parliament Square) this evening at 5:30 (and on I guess)

Saturday 31st there is a protest outside Downing street at 12pm. See photo.

I'll add any more that I see. Feel free to do the same.

Can we list today's protests as we find them please. I see on twitter that people are heading back to London today.

I can’t see this as anything other than a spectacularly stupid move, politically. He’s given all his opponents, previously divided, a cause to rally round. With the wider public, it’ll appeal to his core, but that’s not enough to win a GE.
I think he’s fucked himself.

MsMarvellous · 29/08/2019 07:14

I'm aiming to get to the Newcastle one on Saturday and I signed the petition.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 07:18

Well done MsMarvellous :)

I feel like I am repeating this on every thread but look at the polls. The last four predict a majority in the HoC for BoJo when you run them through an electoral calculus; some of them predict a considerable majority. I actually think we will see a further bounce for Boris's popularity from yesterday's events because his stance will be winning over the considerable number of people who were (up to that point) still saying they would vote for the Brexit Party.

This is very, very canny politics of the worst kind: a politics of PR and posturing, guided not by principle but by empty populist rhetoric. And it will work. The thing is, when Parliament get their act together and block this, either with legislation or a VoNC (plenty of time still for both) it will make him even more popular for the forthcoming General Election which is the real goal.

There's a protest in my city on Saturday, and I will be going.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 07:59

Well done Vertically we need as many people as we can out on the streets.

Petition is up at 1.2 million people.

I signed yesterday and plan to be in Newcastle on Saturday.
People from the North East, do you know about NE4EU Coach to the "People's Vote - Let us be heard" march in London on October 19th?
I went on the big protest march with them and the organisation was spot on.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 08:03

For people who have never been to a protest before I'd urge you to try and get to one near you. Every protest I've been to has been a very positive experience.

They makes you feel less hopeless - you are doing something positive and you can hold your head up high knowing that when it came to the crunch you were willing and able to stand up peacefully for what you believed in.

@OhYouBadBadKitten I agree! The protest march in March was one of the most positive things I have done.
I went knowing it would make bugger all difference, but came home feeling that i had done my bit, small as it was.

Brilliant thread, this OYBK. Halo thanks.
Just seen the rather wonderful young Goat Girl band advertising these events on SM: they reach a demographic that we have been unable to so far........

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 09:05

That's amazing! Exactly what we need!!!

A factual article on prorogation.

Peregrina · 29/08/2019 09:35

I see that there is at least one protest planned in a staunchly Leave area, namely Stoke on Trent. Anyone know which other areas with protests were Leave areas?

For the Leavers on these threads this is of course, their understanding of democracy - only the Referendum of 2016 mattered. In their eyes, who needs Parliament?

BentBastard · 29/08/2019 09:39

I'll be at Downing Street on Saturday, possibly with daughter.

Gutted not to make it yesterday but I'm really hoping Saturday will be huge.

TheBigBallOfOil · 29/08/2019 09:40

Polls schmolls. The tories can’t win when they retreat to their core. His only hope is this wins over previously staunch labour leave voting areas. That’s one hell of a gamble and there is no sign that a bunch of people who would previously have eaten their own heads rather than vote Tory are changing their minds. He’s lost Scotland completely with Davidson’s departure.

woman19 · 29/08/2019 09:41

Well spotted Peregrina I see that the NorthEast 4 EU group were outside Balmoral yesterday.

TheBigBallOfOil · 29/08/2019 09:42

I should say that I actually want the tories to win despite them being assholes, because the other available options are even bigger assholes. But I don’t think they can. This is a do or die strategy and I think he’ll die.

Lumene · 29/08/2019 09:45

This is good on democracy from The Times today:

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/mps-turned-our-politics-into-cage-fighting-5v55gtm7s

distrust of institutions is the common root of populism shaking politics across the West. Suspending parliament to drive through a divisive policy will take us one more step on the road to American-style partisanship but so too would parliament fighting back by blocking the policy altogether.

Roussette · 29/08/2019 09:52

And this is apt too...
