Westminstenders: 30 days to save us all!

It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

Sir Alan Duncan MP @alanduncanmp
I am reactivating my Twitter account early after suspending it for August. News to come…

Alan Duncan being the only government minister who on the free vote supported the Cherry amendment to revoke A50 and then later quit government and tried to get a motion through the HoC to no confidence Johnson early but was blocked by Bercow.

Sounds interesting...

Phillip Hammond @philliphammonduk
It has now become apparent that the Operation Yellowhammer document leaked last week was dated August 2019, and was not ‘old’. My letter to the Prime Minister:

RTB - I thought that until he started waffling about Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and US trade deals (tongue wedged in cheek methinks).

Just recommending this interesting podcast. Not specifically about Brexit but touches on many themes we discuss on here:

  • Rise of populism and far right
  • To what degree democracy is under threat
  • Trumpism, Bannon et al
  • Wokeness on the Left / maximum wokeness

I would believe nothing. From anyone. Go on what happens, NOT what's said.

bellinisurge · 25/08/2019 15:13

Dh just chatted to our neighbour who we suspect voted Leave. "Brexit isn't really going to make that much difference, is it?" said the neighbour. DH said " Er... I think it might".
We are doing everything to keep it cheery, friendly and smiley.
DD's friend's Mum is a determined no dealer although she has been quiet of late about this on FB. Again, keeping it all cheery friendly and smiley and certainly not trumpeting my views on FB. I think she knows where our views are though.
I hate this.

Is the Fail really trying to spin that meds are bad?

It has now become apparent that the Operation Yellowhammer document leaked last week was dated August 2019, and was not ‘old’. My letter to the Prime Minister:

Isn't it an incredibly sad state of affairs when you think to yourself 'good old Philip Hammond, I luffs him'?

QueenOfThorns · 25/08/2019 15:29

I'm still smarting a tad from suggestions only a few days ago that I was being overly pessimistic.

If that was my comments @DGRossetti, that wasn’t what I meant. I have no clue as to whether you’re being too pessimistic or not (apart from the cannibalism thing), I just really hope so. My problem is how unhelpful it all is, and how likely to cause upset and anxiety. And I don’t see the point of it, unless it’s just to say ‘I told you so’ later.

prettybird · 25/08/2019 15:30

But isn't that progress with your dh bellini ? Wasn't he initially sticking his head in the sand about the potential consequences of Brexit?

Socksontheradiator · 25/08/2019 15:32

I never thought I'd love Philip Hammond either, @Apileofballyhoo

RedToothBrush · 25/08/2019 15:33

I'd bloody love someone to go after Johnson for libel...

OP posts:
NoWordForFluffy · 25/08/2019 15:35

FWIW, I agree with what you say / mean @QueenOfThorns.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/08/2019 15:42

Going by the date, it looks more likely that it was a civil servant, not an ex-minister, that leaked

btw, the Gibraltar govt claim that in the intervening 3-4 weeks since the document was written,
they have made adequate contingency plans, Hmm so the Gibraltar issues are apparently no longer so bad.

Songsofexperience · 25/08/2019 16:11

The PM talking to the BBC about meds:

*Asked if people would still be able to get their medicine if there was a no-deal Brexit, the prime minister told the BBC: "That is certainly a guarantee that we can make."

But he added: "I do not want at this stage to say there won't be unforeseen difficulties."*

Well, which is it? A guarantee or not?

Hoooo · 25/08/2019 16:16

67 days...

Socksontheradiator · 25/08/2019 16:18

Did anyone hear BJ say that EU is having 'dawning realisation' over UK?
How much bollocks can one man spout?

BigChocFrenzy · 25/08/2019 16:24

No-deal Brexit will ‘instantly disrupt’ UK’s role as £174bn global data hub

GDPR changes due to becoming a third-country

  • I doubt if some UK companies realise the implications, but most E27-owned ones would

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/aug/25/no-deal-brexit-will-instantly-disrupt-uk-role-as-data-hub-digital-economy

"University College London report warns of significant legal, economic and social disruption"

How many UK firms have taken the necessary actions to be legally able to transfer any data to / from the EU after No Deal ?

EDPD (European Data Protection Board) has listed the steps, but how many UK firms would even know to read this ?

https://edpb.europa.eu/sites/edpb/files/files/file1/edpb-2019-02-12-infonote-nodeal-brexit_en.pdf

or even read the UK version ?
(imo, doesn't explain what to do as clearly as the epdb guide does)

jasjas1973 · 25/08/2019 16:27

Jas, I know you mean well but this is really not helpful. It's really anxiety inducing for all the people who have their lives here and can't just up sticks and leave

Sorry, badly phrased.

I guess after watching a documentary on how a civilized country like Germany ended up voting in Hitler, i didn't think about re wording, i was bloody angry.

I hang my head in shame at the UK, that cunt Johnson and these former remainer tory politicians who are standing by, allowing this to happen, e.g. Rudd, Hancock Jo Johnson.

Refusing to pay what we owe, blaming the EU for our own mess, BJ refusing to rule out food and med shortages, what an earth are we doing?

tobee · 25/08/2019 16:29

So England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 pull off amazing win in the cricket.

Johnson revokes

Trump resigns.

Well, I couldn't believe any of those would happen today.

RedToothBrush · 25/08/2019 16:42

Roland Smith @rolandmcs
Latest YouGov poll (compared to June and the EP election).
Excluding Don't Knows:
Remain=41%
No Deal=31%%
Deal/Middlers=28%
The Middlers have crept up

When asked what a middler was, he replied

Roland Smith @rolandmcs
A Deal that's close to the EU i.e. "in the market that runs from Iceland to Turkey" (copyright: Vote Leave)

(I believe Smith worked for vote leave if my memory serves me correctly).

When asked were the Middlers came from:

Roland Smith @rolandmcs
The other two have both dropped a few points.

I guess I'm not a Remain technically then now. I guess I'm technically a Middler.

I think the term is a useful one... It drives a wedge in the culture war and polarisation.

Might start using it more.

BeardedMum · 25/08/2019 16:43

Yes very strange state of affair when you think Hammond is great and thinking back TM never embarrassed me to the extent BJ does. I just hope we cannot sink further. Imagine the day we miss good old BJ....

DGRossetti · 25/08/2019 16:45

Worth reflecting on and how this might be a problem for Johnson.

No problem at all. Just don't let anyone anywhere near the remotest possibility of actually getting to vote on it, and it's job done.
