Johnson likes publicity.

Any attention is good attention. Whilst you are talking about how crazy his idea is, the less you come up with your own.

And there it is. The lack of plan to stop no deal. Just a bunch of idiots who argue over who is more right about politics without offering up a practical solution.

Unable to see their own flaws.

And leading us ever closer to the cliff edge and operation Yellowhammer.

And the extra Y in my sentence is irking me Grin

If BoZo values his life he had better keep schtum about any future expectations. Epstein was a threat to Trump after all... He might go the way of the tropy hunted puffins which I can imagine Trump has on his bathroom wall

I like the suggestion out of Denmark that they should offer to swap Greenland for California.

Peregrina · 21/08/2019 10:08

swap Greenland for California.

Grin. I know Californians who would be very happy at this suggestion, and happy to have EU passports.

How dangerous is it, I wonder, for women to suddenly come off HRT?

How many secondary conditions will be affected ?

DWs MS is delicately connected to hormones.

Again, women bearing the brunt.

Grinchly · 21/08/2019 10:12

Re Trump and Greenland - I heard a theory that he (or his staff) had realised that Obama was also visiting Denmark that week, and the difference in reception would...hurt his ego. So the Greenland thing provided the reason to cancel the trip.

To be honest, either could be true.

Re woman's list of deplorable things - children housed in containers etc - agree with all but one - I do think parents should train their children as thoroughly as any sensible and conscientious dog-owner would.

I daily witness appalling levels of behaviour from young children allowed to run around shrieking, totally out of control in public spaces, shops, trains and restaurants.

Only this morning on the station two small children were allowed to run up and down the platform, bellowing, then stand in front of the ticket machine, pressing the touch screen randomly, and blocking adults from getting their tickets.

Their mother thought this was hilarious. Customers had to reach over them awkwardly, especially one man who was of course desperately trying to avoid any physical contact.

Had I allowed my dog to behave in such an unruly manner, there would have quite rightly been hell to pay.

Sit. Stay. Quiet. Look at me. And maybe keeping them on the lead in public too. Grin

I'm afraid I would just have asked them politely - once - to get out of my way, then shouted "move !"
As an Aspie, I get very stressed travelling

HS2: Review to examine costs and benefits of rail project

I'll do it now for the government. We can't afford HS2. And its a great vote winner to scrap.

I like your style BCF Grin

I'd have done exactly the same - but I like to get my ticket from the nice, helpful man in the ticket office (vainly hoping I am keeping him in a job!)

It did make me seethe though.

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/08/21/uk_it_job_ads_keep_falling/

IT job postings in the UK are being battered by Brexit and the lingering uncertainty of leaving the EU without a Withdrawal Agreement on 31 October.

According to CompTIA stats out today, job ads were down 13 per cent year-on-year and a stonking 40 per cent lower than the same period in 2017.

(contd)

DGRossetti · 21/08/2019 10:25

Following up with the comments on that Reg article, one jumped out:

Recruiters seem to be upping their networking activity in the north in response to a steady stream of relocations from London and the Thames Valley owing to the still-rising cost of employing and housing people there.

Grinchly · 21/08/2019 10:26

Yes RTB - I've been waiting for that too. It'll help to pay for a small fraction of the No Deal preparations.

He committed to the Leeds-Manchester upgrade (part of HS3) though didn't he. Although as ever, short on detail. There are lots of different phases to the whole project.

Peregrina · 21/08/2019 10:27

Rafael Behr sums this up perfectly. Especially with the President's comments about the Vietnam war:
“I don’t think it’s worth fighting for and I don’t think we can get out,” said Johnson. “It’s the biggest damn mess.”

Eventually though, the American public were fed up of seeing their boys killed in the Far East for no discernible purpose.

Grinchly · 21/08/2019 10:33

'Committed' in the Johnson sense, that is.

Also, originally ukip policy.

I quite agree lonely

Although I do have a new idea for a tv and training programme:

"Train your brexit like a dog"

With great episodes including:

How to stop your barking brexit
trip to the vets: castration is fun
how to put your brexit to sleep: it's the kindest solution

DGR the problem up in the NW is there seem to be too many IT jobs and not enough adequately skilled people to fill them.

Honestly, the world and his wife seem to have moved to Manchester.

Recruiters are utterly desparate. It comes up in conversation regularly for DH and I in the circles we are in. Everyone we know working in the industry are really fed up with the recruiters at the moment. They are all getting desparate unsoliticted calls from recruiters for jobs that are totally unsuitable for them.

The glut of jobs does have its benefits though. Lots of opportunities and everyone networks a lot so they all are aware of the employers with shit reputations for work culture. Everyone good is avoiding them.

Manchester is very much well on the road to becoming London2. From this point of view whether you need HS2 at all, because of these changes is very much a question mark to me. It needs a better transport network connecting Manchester to all its satellite towns instead tbh.

Tory vote winner because of all the Tory boroughs en route.

Although not directly affected by HS2, it comes to something when the Tories can lose control of a District Council like South Oxfordshire, which includes Johnson's old seat of Henley.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2019 10:55

Interesting upsurge in non-Brexit forum Brexit threads ...

This time, the calls for them to be hidden seem muted ?

None of which makes a jot of difference to our crashing out with no deal come October. Which is happening.

RedToothBrush · 21/08/2019 10:55

Tokyo, its changes since May and thats a real outlier of a poll. I'd honestly ignore.

Reminder: This is the kind of thing Ireland won't want to share

and MPs have already passed this legislation, after hardly any scrutiny, to take effect after Brexit
So much for relying on MPs to mitigate the effects of a Tory govt

https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jun/12/uk-accused-silently-eroding-eu-pesticide-rules-brexit-laws?

The UK has been accused of “silently eroding” key environmental and human health protections in the Brexit-inspired rush to convert thousands of pages of European Union pesticide policy into British law.

Despite government claims the process would be little more than a technical exercise,
analysis by the University of Sussex’s UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO) has uncovered significant departures from EU regulations,

including the removal of a blanket ban on hormone-disrupting chemicals, which are known to cause adverse health effects such as cancer, birth defects and immune disorders.

The UK legislation removes the EU system of checks and balances to give a handful of ministers the power to create, amend and revoke pesticide legislation.

It also appears to weaken the existing “precautionary principle” approach, which requires scientific evidence from an independent body that a pesticide is safe to use.
Instead, UK ministers are given the option to obtain and consider such evidence at their own discretion.
< in the US, victims have to wait until they are harmed, then sue for damages >

The changes could lead to the widespread use in the UK of harmful and carcinogenic pesticides, the researchers warn.

Fancy a trip to Holland ? Which passport will I use ?

www.rte.ie/news/newslens/2019/0820/1069938-brexit-beach-party/

Thousands of people have signed up on Facebook to a Dutch beach party for Brexit, featuring food from across the European Union to mark Britain's departure.

Created by media worker Ron Toekook, the event calls for partygoers to meet at the seaside village of Wijk aan Zee near Amsterdam on 31 October, the date Britain is meant to leave.

More than 7,000 people have already said they will attend, while 52,000 others are interested.

"It will be a nice goodbye to a good friend who is going on an exciting adventure, but is perhaps not too bright," Mr Toekook told the Dutch news agency ANP.

The party will involve "sitting in a deck chair with Dutch chips, French wine and German beer, watching Britain as it closes itself off."

"If there is enough interest there may be a band that can play... 'We'll Meet Again'."

Other suggestions for songs that could be played include single "Britain Come Back" sung by Dutch novelty boy band "Breunion Boys".

Mr Toekook said the party was a natural step for the Netherlands, which has had centuries of close cultural, trade and political links with Britain.

With their economies still closely intertwined, the Dutch have made major preparations in case Britain crashes out of the EU without a divorce deal on 31 October.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/08/2019 11:05

In contrast to the Kantar poll, here's YouGov with Tories on 30%
Still a big Tory lead, which would probably give a working Tory majority of about 40 seats

No wonder BJ is gearing up to a GE
If that is for after No Deal, Corbyn should deny him the necessary ⅔ HoC vote, however eager he personally is for a GE
