Johnson likes publicity.

Any attention is good attention. Whilst you are talking about how crazy his idea is, the less you come up with your own.

And there it is. The lack of plan to stop no deal. Just a bunch of idiots who argue over who is more right about politics without offering up a practical solution.

Unable to see their own flaws.

And leading us ever closer to the cliff edge and operation Yellowhammer.

Thank you! Excellent stuff.

Thank you Red

I wonder if Blowjob would be quite so blasé about vital medicines if a member of his family had a serious health condition or life limiting illness.

Johnson’s mother has Parkinson’s. As I mentioned on an earlier thread, when DH’s Parkinson’s specialist contacted the then Mayor of London asking for support in her ground-breaking research the reply came back from his office:

‘What’s in it for Boris?’

BigChocFrenzy · 20/08/2019 00:37

The wealthy & powerful will not suffer shortages

Even moderately well-off people can obtain most meds via trips abroad

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 20/08/2019 01:26

OK, we know about operation Yellowhammer, but what do we know about Operation Snow Bunting?

For a freedom of information request this denial is pretty scary...

lonelyplanetmum · 20/08/2019 05:14

I'm still squeezing the most of holiday time with the children so not keeping up with the thread but take it this link has been posted?

Why has the government published this? Interestingly May's approach was always very clandestine. The EU were open and accountable on every step of the process by contrast.

So it's good if surprising that this is open. But why? Why publish this? It has the mark of some of Johnson's own language in editing. However there is no substance. It is basically Ireland must trust us (ha ha) to sort something out later.

So what's the rationale in being uncharacteristically open about this?

How long before we can call Johnson's proposal "the Boris Backstop "?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 07:31

Well I guess that Operation Snow Bunting does exist, else other than the reference to the Kent Resilience Forum why would the response be harping on and on about Brexit?

Hahahaha! The Brexiter wet dream is finally out! To become the 51st state. Lol. That will not happen- we're not going to be California, no, it'll be more like Chile in the 70-80s. BJ's reckless end of FOM and refusal to be transparent about the NoDeal disaster show his scant regard for people's lives.
And to those who don't care about the fate of EU citizens: what happens to others only foreshadows what'll happen to you eventually.

Boris Johnson tells trade ministers to leave NHS out of trade deal discussions with the United States

A stinging letter from Boris Johnson’s senior staff to Trade Secretary Liz Truss’s office has been seen by The Sun.

In it, one of the PM’s officials says: “The Prime Minister has asked me to underline that measures affecting the NHS, including service provision and drug pricing, cannot under any circumstances form part of an agreement with the United States.

“These issues are not on the table and we do not therefore expect to see any internal discussion of them in Whitehall. I’d be grateful if you could ensure the relevant policy teams are aware of this.”

There are also fears that the NHS issue could come up again during US Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to Britain next month.

And

A second powerful figure in the US Congress yesterday added his warnings against his country signing any trade deal with Britain that undermines the Northern Ireland peace agreement.

In a letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said he will strongly oppose any US-UK trade deal that undermines the Good Friday Agreement.

And he said he will work with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and members on both sides of the aisle in both chambers of Congress to block any deal that threatens the peace accord.

It is not possible to have a trade deal with the US which doesn't undermine the GFA though...

How long before we can call Johnson's proposal "the Boris Backstop "?

Judging by twitter, by about 9am...

David Allen Green@davidallengreen
Once central, inescapable truth about the Boris Johnson letter

If he and his government had the slightest confidence in "alternative arrangements" then there would not be any concern about the backstop

For the backstop is only insurance for such arrangements not happening

How much do you bet that suddenly everything will be back on the table the day after an election victory?

NoWordForFluffy · 20/08/2019 07:52

The government is a bit leaky right now. It seems that there's a few unhappy people in there!

As it was during the war years, rationing will initially be by price. Eventually they had to address that, and brought in the Utility scheme and British Restaurants where a basic meal could be purchased cheaply. Otherwise there were riots and strikes. Which we don't hear much about, we hear about jolly sing songs in air raid shelters!

Did Leavers really vote for rationing?

NoWordForFluffy · 20/08/2019 08:08

Seemingly they voted for anything that's not death. Their death, that is. The death of others is apparently fine.

Though on another thread, one poster simply doesn't think it's worth worrying about whether she can get her life saving drugs or not. So maybe they even voted for their own deaths, as we all have to pop off at some point, don't we?!

Songsofexperience · 20/08/2019 08:09

Did Leavers really vote for rationing?

Honestly I've stopped caring about why they voted.
They voted leave and now we're in the shit, it's all that matters.

TheElementsSong · 20/08/2019 08:18

Brexiteers just keep adding layers of often mutually contradictory narratives as events have unfolded. We could call it the “Six+ Impossible Things before Brexit” fairytale.

  1. We know exactly what we voted for - It’s going to be super-easily achieved marvellous Sunlit Uplands with no downsides because They Need Us More Than We Need Them (BMWs/prosecco) and Don’t They Know Who We Are and we all just have to BeLeave to make it happen, and the EU is going to collapse when they see how we flourish effortlessly in glorious isolation.
  2. We know exactly what we voted for - It would have been (1) if it wasn’t for the PunishmentBullying of the EU and the negative NotBeLeaving Project Fear Sabotage of the Traitorous Remoaners with foreign taint.
  3. We know exactly what we voted for - We never said it was going to be easy but we’ll get to the Sunlit Uplands eventually and then it will be marvellous “short term pain for long term gain”.
  4. We know exactly what we voted for - We always knew it would be hard and might be hard forever, but we voted to be poorer and for food rationing and medical shortages, hardship is worth it because Sovereignty and SomethingBlitzSpirit.
  5. We know exactly what we voted for - But any reports of negative events are Fake News, because despite (3) and (4) nothing negative could happen because of Brexit (see 1); therefore even talking about preparing for food/medicine shortages is hysterical scaremongering treason by Traitorous Remoaners and no True Patriot would save even a grain of rice.
  6. We know exactly what we voted for - Pretend we didn’t say (1) and (5) - As we’ve said all along, preparing for food/medicine shortages is what any sensible True Patriot would do because stockpiling is Comforting, and will show the BullyingEU Who We Are and they won’t notice that They Don’t Need Us More Than We Need Them.
  7. Feel free to add more layers as they come.

TheElementsSong

You need to add

  1. Ireland will make things easier and follow the example do as it's told of its bigger neighbour and Irexit, because obviously the UK knows better.
  1. Ireland should remember its place as a colony of the UK and if it doesn't, it can be starved into submission. (Don't they know who we are?)
