Sorry for not replying @flouncyfanny and @Bercows , I'm on holiday with patchy signal.
I don't dehydrate apricots because they are (currently) easy to get for the stash and I recall reading on some internet rabbit hole that I disappeared down that they took ages -even by dehydrator standards.
I have tried those packs of three chopped fruit things you can get - melon pineapple mango - and they were fine. Watermelon is surprisingly yummy. I recently fought off my urge for crisps by munching on some mango - obviously you need to be careful not to trough to make ch dried fruit at once because your tummy er ... makes things move quickly (what I say to my dd when I'm being delicate in my language Grin).
Again frozen veg is chopped to the right size and is a surprising success.
I grew kale and spinach last year and actually still have some left.
I wash old jars with intact lids in hot soapy water then i rinse them and put in boiling water. I get the water back up to a boil then have them in that boil for 8 mins. I sit them on a tea towel to dry. I put in tbe dehydrated goods with a moisture absorber (cheap off Amazon) and close the lid.
Apart from frozen veg. I always presoak stuff for dehydration in weak citric acid solution- again Amazon - for 10 mins. I have a few books but my favourite is "dehydrating for idiots". Aptly named.

bellini by moisture absorber, do you mean the little silica dessicant sachets you get in vitamin bottles or something else? Thank you.

cherin · 15/08/2019 08:38

Ocado has a very good offer for the BEST quality chopped tomatoes, Mutti. 2 packs of 3 tins (so 6 tins) for 4£.

bellinisurge · 15/08/2019 09:07

@Saffrone , those do at a pinch but you can get batches of them that are vacuum sealed until you open the packet they are in on Amazon. I then stored the packet in an old big jar I have keeping them out of "the air" as best I can.
Like me they lose their magical power if exposed too much Grin

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/08/2019 09:11

Iceland have a pack of tuna for £3.50 (4 x 145g) cans or 2 packs for £6 - 8 cans

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 15/08/2019 09:12

Does dehydrated watermelon disappear to nothing?

AwdBovril · 15/08/2019 10:49

I've never done watermelon, but canteloupe is very delicious, it takes on a sort of slightly earthy savoury taste alongside the intensified sweet melon taste. I bet watermelon would be wonderful. Pears are also very lovely too - I'm not usually a fan of the conference variety (the cheap ones you can buy in biggish bags) but after dehydrating they are lovely).

AwdBovril · 15/08/2019 10:59

Flouncy - re.Grape Tree - recommend you check out their prices online first, the best value is to be had with the kilo bags of nuts etc. Assuming you'll use it before they go off! If you're travelling specifically to go to a shop you definitely need to be aware it's likely to be expensive. I could drop £50 on nuts alone, & my nearest store is 10 minutes walk away... it's a problem! They are good value for large pots of dried herbs & spices too, just needs to make sure you only buy stuff you'll actually use before it goes stale. Whole spices keep much better than ground, & I use a granite mortar & pestle for grinding now.

@AutumnCrow, I also wear disposable gloves a lot for my work. I started getting sore and itchy hands, but it stopped when I started using latex free vinyl ones. In case that's helpful!
Useful thread, thanks.

Socksontheradiator · 15/08/2019 14:53

Haha @flouncyfanny, dried apricots and other fruit make me *ahem, 'windy'!

KateUrrer · 15/08/2019 14:55

If you can get to a B & M store they have some good prices on tins and cleaning stuff.

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/08/2019 14:50

We had/will have again a large stash of dried fruit as DD has a sluggish hypermobile gut that takes some shifting.

I on the other hand have rapid digestionary transit...

We stock up at Aldi mainly. Some stuff from Morrisons and Asda.

Chopped tomatoes at 28p a tin or 25p during Ramadan.

A Kilo of ground spices for £3 or £4 or £5 from Asda depending on sort.

Found that the variety of stuff in the same chain of supermarkets varies greatly with location.

No world foods here in Bridport Morrisons for instance so no access to some of the stuff we normally buy at reasonable prices. There is a large Asian and other not white British population near home so there is greater variety and cheaper deals. We are very lucky.

AwdBovril · 16/08/2019 17:52

FlouncyFanny - they could be, the shop my local Grape Tree is in, was previously a Julian Graves. They didn't seem to alter tremendously much in terms of what stock they carried - I forget as it was a few years ago that it changed.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 17/08/2019 15:09

Anybody wanting to get a few bits in for Christmas, Tesco have milk chocolate oranges for a pound each. Expiry 19/07/20. I also noticed bottles of Appletiser for £1.50 each. Not life’s essentials but hatever happens, not bad prices for things to have in for Christmas or treats.
I got three chocolate oranges and may purchase four Appletiser for Christmas. Whatever happens it will ease the cost.

SistemaAddict · 17/08/2019 15:33

Chocolate oranges ARE a Christmas essential in this house! Thanks for the tip Smile

AwdBovril · 17/08/2019 16:14

Ooh... Chocolate Oranges are my essential migraine food. (That or Toblerone.) I rarely eat "junk" chocolate these days, but I've got one on the bed next to me now... DH paid more than a pound for it though! Will stock up, thanks, Duchess. I'll have to bury them deep in the cupboard, though, or I'll give in & eat them too fast next time I need one.

prettybird · 17/08/2019 16:18

Any plain chocolate oranges? They're our compulsory Christmas treat (along with the tin not plastic of Quality Street Grin). Oh, and the giant Toblerones Blush

....but I'd also have to hide them very deep in the wardrobe to stop them being eaten disappearing before Christmas Blush

I refuse to get tubs or pouches: I need to wait until the Christmas tins come out! Wink ....I had a few of my tins (which I use to supply ds' rugby teams with chocolate chip cookies once they're empty) disappear last year, so I'm needing a new supply. Got a kg tin for £5 last year Grin

I'm starting to look out for them now - it's over the next month or so that they appear. I then store the tin(s) in plain sight, along with the empty ones, on top of the kitchen units (which require standing on a chair to reach).

John Lewis also did them last year. Smile

AspergersMum · 17/08/2019 20:10

Today I bought 12 tin pack of tuna from Costco, £12.79 but these are bigger tins than standard size (and much better quality IMO, not mushy). Kirkland own brand. Also John West mackerel tins, 10 for £8.89 and sardines, 12 for £8.99. Need to replenish the baked beans next but I'm running out of space.

bellinisurge · 18/08/2019 09:29

Today's dehydration task - 7 limes for gin and tonic. Because that's how I roll Grin.

They'll take ages but if I have a gin related emergency, they will be perfect.

I anticipate Gin related emergencies. Particularly when it's cold and miserable.
