Westminstenders: Promises, promises

Today polling showed that there was a majority in Scotland who support Independence. The 'Boris Bounce' really isn't universal. And this is a firm sign all is not well.

There is talk tonight that Johnson is planning to stay on as PM even if he loses a vote of no confidence in order to force No Deal through and prevent a government of national unity. Instead he would call a 'people v politicians' general election to be held shortly after we'd left the EU.

Johnson's willingness to defy parliament should not be discounted and should be taken seriously. Its highly likely in one way or another. No deal is technically illegal, but its also the default. This does not seem to be fully recognised by remainers. But this is a man who lied and continued to lie. And there is every sign that he would be willing to cause some sort of constitutional crisis. Especially if he really is like Trump. This is what authoritarians do - defy convention and rip up the rule book - because the powers that are suppose to hold them to account are too weak to hold them to account. Something that Johnson has already proved time and again. He has no respect for others.

All the signs are Johnson is in fully into campaigning for a GE already. He's touring the country and ignoring Europe. He's offering money for the NHS - its open to debate whether this is new money - the optics on this are all down to what you want to believe. Those who want Johnson will believe the promise; those who don't won't.

The penny hasn't fully dropped in parliament. There is talk of a vote of no confidence being called by Labour 'at the earliest opportunity' in September. The reality is its too little too late and is unlikely to work to have the desired effect and inside will play right into Johnson's plan. The failure of the Opposition to spot what he was likely to do, has been the story of the last 3 years, where Remainers have been reactionary and unable to anticipate what would happen next. Their lack of imagination and inability to look beyond their own rhetoric has been their undoing and may cost us all in the long run.

Meanwhile in Brussels, the EU unlike our Parliament have recognised the inevitability of no deal and if Johnson wants no deal there is no way to stop it. And that he has no inclination whatsoever to negotiate.

The expectation is still that the EU will have the backstop and the Brexit Bill of £39 billion as the requirement for the opening of trade talks if we no deal.

Which leaves up shit creek.

At the same time the new trade minister Liz Truss is full on libertarian and talking to the US with this in mind.

That would mean a bonfire of rights and standards which will horrify many. That means goodbye to workers rights, food standards and data protection.

The tech giants have the ears of Washington so British ideas of a tax on them are being seen as a block on a US trade deal.

It comes as the UK has joined a US coalition to protect ships in the Gulf - something we were originally given a snub against, and led to Jeremy Hunt saying we would join a European led force. Its not clear what, who or how the US uturn has come about...

Meanwhile our summer holidays are all getting more expensive... and this is just the start of it.

This is real. This isn't a bluff.

Can you stockpile diesel safely @bellinisurge?

Or still a big no-no?

LonelyTiredandLow · 09/08/2019 12:00

Ah, so Larry is being used as catnip to single women Hmm

I'd vote for Larry any day but in the mean time would happily teach him how great BoZo's shoes would be as a litterbox...

gnomeisland · 09/08/2019 12:00

RTB, watching in despair and disbelieve over the unfolding of events over Brexit these last 3 years it's been that bus in the background behind that smirking, self-satisfied tosser has finally tipped me over the edge.

Thank you for these threads. Been lurking since the beginning. Will be here until the end.

LonelyTiredandLow · 09/08/2019 12:04

He still only has 608k 'likes' on FB. IIRC the Campaign To Make Adult Frog Wellies got over 800k likes before the page went down a couple of years ago... says a lot to me.

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2019 12:05

Ignore my question on diesel, googled and answer is no.

I wasn't sure if it was as flammable as petrol

Hazardtired · 09/08/2019 12:17

Johnson needs to work on his propaganda photos. His gurning grin and camera eye contact make him look like a pervert in the park that's followed home the cat of the woman he's been stalking.

Basilpots · 09/08/2019 12:26

Rhubarb I am rural too but petrol was one of the things that we should be fine for as long as ironically people maintain their usual usage and don’t stockpile.

ImNotYourGranny · 09/08/2019 12:35

As a crazy cat lady, I can say with absolute certainty that that cat is really pissed off at being forced to pose for photos with a twat. Look at his ear positioning, that's a clear 'fuck this shit' message.

Basilpots · 09/08/2019 12:45

Fall in the pound has unexpected consequences. I haven’t been able to collect my car from the bodyshop because they will not release it as the repair costs have increased from the original quote and they want a guarantee from the insurers that they will pay the revised amount.

So if we exit no deal and have tariffs added to already price increased car parts expect motoring and insurance expenses to go up again.

Emilyontmoor · 09/08/2019 12:45

He’s been doing the gurning mad stalker look forever and he is still in Number Ten, I have been told by Brexit relatives to “Give Bozza a chance” It’s like a football chant and involves the same emotions. Never mind he is a liar and devoid of principles and has a cabinet of idiots who don’t understand the meaning of the word probity. We are “stationary” apparently and Bozza will get us moving. The flag and bus were triggers to those emotions.....

BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2019 12:46

Raab said the EU would be responsible for the consequences of a no deal Brexit.

But, but, but ...
he and other No Dealers keep proclaiming that a no deal Brexit is a fantastic opportunity for Britain to thrive and prosper

Does he mean he's thanking the EU for this opportunity to No Deal ?
Or is he just lying through his teeth on both counts ?

Basilpots · 09/08/2019 12:47

Thankfully no tariffs on car parts yay. Just need £ to stop dropping.

Mistigri · 09/08/2019 12:47

Ignore my question on diesel, googled and answer is no.

It depends what you store it in. Jerry cans would be a no, but neither diesel nor gasoline are as flammable as the large tank of gas that sits less than 10 metres from my mum's front door (and about 3 metres from the neighbour's kitchen window).

www.spectator.co.uk/2019/08/were-heading-for-a-1-november-election/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
We’re heading for a 1 November election

The talk in Whitehall is that the election could be on the day after Brexit, 1 November, which would mean the UK would leave the EU during the election campaign.

Friday election?

Boris Johnson is a c*

NoWordForFluffy · 09/08/2019 13:07

So proroguing Parliament in a period that's it's been legislated it has to sit during?

He had to get 2/3 of Parliament to agree though. So will they, given the no deal implications?

LonelyTiredandLow · 09/08/2019 13:16

The genius of the GE date is that if he looses he doesn't have to sort out Brexit. If a coalition wins they more than likely will struggle to agree to revoke. If LD's win a majority (unlikely) they still inherit the financial crash (unless it is at all possible the markets would suddenly soar back?). I'd love to see the latter but suspect it isn't likely and may be more complex due to the amount of companies fleeing and costs incurred by businesses to stockpile, etc.

Strangely though, I cannot see him winning a GE at the moment.

LonelyTiredandLow · 09/08/2019 13:18

Rhubarb he is a clown, indeed Grin

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2019 13:18

@ImNotYourGranny I agree, that is one peeved cat.

If that's the photo they went with, imagine how pissed off Larry looks in the outtakes...

My cat has an amazing resting bitch face

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2019 13:27

With a 1 Nov the Tories would most likely win though wouldn't they?

They'd bring back most of the BXP supporters after 'doing Brexit'.

It's possible that some centre right might drift back thinking 'better the devil they know' to deal with the economic fallout than what they consider a less tested party.

Labour clearly aren't going to make any big in roads as they're losing 100 members a day at the moment apparently and performance in latest polls is not good.

On the 1st Nov no shit will have hit the fan by the time most voters go to the poll and any that does will be explained away easily as 'day one teething problems, everything will be fine in a day or two'.

I would anticipate a Tory win I think or at least a Tory minority Govt looking for support.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/08/2019 13:32

So a VONC plays into his hands then. If he tables the vote himself for the GE under the FTPA, can somebody tag a 'must request extension' amendment onto it? Same question with a VONC?

LonelyTiredandLow · 09/08/2019 13:41

Is it possible for Parliament to deny a GE? Or delay it until after Xmas? They need to take back control of the timings here.

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2019 13:42

He won't have to table a VoNC, he knows someone will do it as otherwise it looks like they haven't tried to stop no deal. He also knows that Labour's big goal is a GE.

Mainly when I say 'he' I'm probably really referring to the puppet master Cummings more than BoJo.

BoJo is 100 x more dangerous with Cummings as I don't believe BJ has any serious ideology to get carried away with and doesn't have the brains to be dangerous. Cummings has the brains and the ideology. Plus the fact he's unelected gives him more free reign in a way.

Will see if I can find out if a VoNC is amendable but my gut feel is that it won't be.

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2019 13:42

Not to my knowledge Lonely

LonelyTiredandLow · 09/08/2019 13:43

I say that because BoZo and crew need to be the ones holding the gun. If we can't stop it going off I'm not going to have smoke and mirrors used to deflect the giant turd that is Brexit onto any Remain party.
