To be terrified of no deal Brexit

Having just watched the headlines, it really does seem that Boris is hellbent on taking us out with no deal. The fact he’s thrown down the gauntlet to the EU stating that he won’t come to the table unless they drop the backstop - well of course they’re not going to do that, and Boris won’t back down, so we will be leaving with no deal.

What do you think will be the repercussions of this? I’m terrified I’m going to lose my job and my home. If I’m worried then I can’t imagine what people reliant on various meds are going through.

I think I might stop watching the news as it just makes me anxious.

I never knew that my couple of extra tins of soup/canned tomatoes/baked beans a week, with the occasional extra multipack of bog rolls constituted a frenzy Confused

But I am enjoying beginning to harvest the fruits of my labours from the garden Grin Does that count as a frenzy? Wink

Frankiestein402 · 02/08/2019 18:12

Far too few people are worrying - the country is sleepwalking into an economic disaster - even the one economist saying brexit will be OK in the long term says we lose farming and manufacturing.

Stop trivialising the most idiotic thing any country has ever done to itself.

Government preparations amount to publishing lightweight statements to the effect that 'people should prepare' - that does not equate to preparations. Last November we needed ferries - there aren't any booked for October.

Socksontheradiator · 02/08/2019 18:13

I know, all the frenzying is a shocker!
Who'd have thunk that a well stocked larder and vegetable garden was so rebellious?
A generation or two ago it was the norm.....

Socksontheradiator · 02/08/2019 18:14

Well said @Frankiestein!

bellinisurge · 02/08/2019 18:22

@Janista , you don't even live here. You live in Australia. Why do you give a fuck - other than having fun shit stirring. Or peddling bullshit. To put it another way.
Come home . Not "when the dust settles " as you have so breezily put it. Before 31 October. Live here.

Mamamia456 · 02/08/2019 18:35

No one's saying that people buying a few extra tins of beans are in a frenzy, but there is a lot of scaremongering on the Brexit threads. If people are worried then the best thing to do is to he prepared. If people want to stock up on food that's fine, but there's little point worrying about medication because people can't stock up on that. As for chlorinated chicken - I don't think anyone will be eating that, unless they want to. We should do well to remember that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow so why be terrified of something happening months away.

Socksontheradiator · 02/08/2019 18:39

Do you not read current news at all??

Socksontheradiator · 02/08/2019 18:44

The post title says 'terrified' but if you read the thread it's pretty calm discussion about what no deal looks like. Stick your own head in the sand by all means, but out there in real life, activists and some MPs are working their arses off to try to assuage potential damage to our country. Any discussion that helps open people's eyes to the reality of the situation can only improve that. It's not helping anybody to try to close down discussions.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/08/2019 18:48

exactly, well said mamamia! fancy people who need cancer treatment or insulin actually worrying about it!
what is the matter with them?
Just because no deal brexit jeopardises medical supples and all medical bodies say it will be catastrophic to the nhs, doesn't mean anything at all.

what do doctors, scientists and trade experts know?

it might be brilliant!

Mamamia456 · 02/08/2019 18:56

Helmetbymidnght - I am one of those people you are referring to, I need life saving medication, but there's no point in me worrying about something that I have no control over. We are leaving the EU, preferably with a deal, but if it is no deal then I will deal with that when it happens.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/08/2019 19:16

cant argue with a brexiteer who relies on life saving medication from the EU!

Justaboutdone · 02/08/2019 19:19

@Helmet I am guessing that Mama will go to the back of the queue voluntarily and let others who do not want to No Adela access any supplies of medicine that there may be.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/08/2019 19:24

she will- im sure,

blitz spirit isnt it mama-

(even though its fucking brexiteers dropping the bombs)

jasjas1973 · 02/08/2019 19:25

If you really do need life saving medication, then if you don't get it, you'll die.... i'd have thought that's worth worrying about, my niece will also die without her medication, she is shitting it, her hair is coming out in clumps because of the stress.

For the UKs health sec (Matt Hancock) to state that people will die with a no-deal and then sign up for exactly that is little more than evil.

Justaboutdone · 02/08/2019 19:27

Tory party before all else.........

Helmetbymidnight · 02/08/2019 19:30

im sure if it does comes to a situation of very limited meds, brexiteers will do the patriotic thing and not take it. they will have got their important sovereignty back after all.

Mamamia456 · 02/08/2019 19:37

Looking at the NHS website, they have been preparing for a no deal Brexit since 2018, so no I am not worried, and if I knew someone in real life was worried I would be trying to reassure them, not adding to their fear. A lot can happen between now and October. We may leave with a deal.

prettybird · 02/08/2019 19:39

Ironically, someone who in their frenzy Wink managed to stockpile a small amount because they foresaw the risk, might in effect save the life of someone who stuck their head in the sand assumed that others would do the hard work, so allowing them to have first dibs on the limited supply Confused

Mamamia456 · 02/08/2019 19:45

Jasjas1973 - Why would I worry that I may not be able to get medication come November, bloody hell we're only just in August!

Helmetbymidnight · 02/08/2019 19:45

hmm, i wonder if brexiteers would sign something legally enforceable that said in the (hugely unlikely!) event of limited meds due to their no deal brexit they would give up their claim.
this would be a fab goodwill gesture.

Mamamia456 · 02/08/2019 19:49

Pretty bird - Nooooo........ first rule of stockpiling, never tell anyone that's what you're doing!

Socksontheradiator · 02/08/2019 19:55

Mamamia I do see what you mean , in that there is no point in worrying about things you can do little about.
I think we have 2 options : to fill the freezers and stock up on bog roll, and hope for the best. Or, open our eyes, and get educating ourselves as best as we possibly can.
Somebody like you, keeping calm and helping others keep calm, is useful. But please do it with eyes wide open if you can, and don't trivialise this. People aren't 'scaremongering' for entertainment.

Mamamia456 · 02/08/2019 20:24

Socksontheradiator - Thank you. I am not trivialising the situation, and I understand that people are worried about medication but the NHS website is reassuring for anyone who wants to have a look.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/08/2019 20:29

ime, the less informed people are, the less concerned they are.

jasjas1973 · 02/08/2019 20:42

You said you need life saving meds? why wouldn't you be concerned? presumably, like my niece you die without them.

I do admire your trusting nature though, i mean believing without question what a Govt Website tells you about medicine and equipment shortages following their flagship policy...according to Gove.
