Westminstenders: It couldn't get any worse... Until today

We are trapped in the tailspin of the end of the UK. Firmly headed downward and getting more and more frenzied and desperate.

Even the most sensible of types like David Allen Green have finally noticed that Brexit isn't about leaving the EU it's about the frenzied and wilful destruction of our state instutions and structure. The collapse of the civil service, of our justice system, our democratic institutions and social order. All in the name of rule Britannia, a warped sense of taking back control to preserve an ideal that never existed and an idea of sovereignity that simply was a fantasy.

We move ever closer to Johnson becoming Prime Minister and a life under President Trump.

Joy.

Ode to Joy really isn't that bad.

PMK

NoWordForFluffy · 10/07/2019 08:08

What's got into the BBC? Not like them to be interested in actual Brexit facts.

ContinuityError · 10/07/2019 08:13

PMK - with a vole for a change.

John Major would seek a JR to challenge prorogation. R4 just now.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/07/2019 08:18

I like John Major, I've decided!

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/07/2019 08:20

Loving JM. He's hopping mad and the gloves are off!

1tisILeClerc · 10/07/2019 08:21

Thanks again RTB:
Great, the BBC are doing some 'fact checking'.
They then spoil it by saying:

{After Brexit, the 310-mile Irish border would represent the only land border between the UK and the EU }
So what about the border between Gibraltar and Spain?

Is that BoE program available elsewhere by any chance as I don't have TV?

Maybe I have lived a sheltered life but the posters on these threads have used more 'bad language' than I have heard from women for 50+ years.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/07/2019 08:22

My generation swear like troopers (born late 70s). And my profession (litigation) does as well. I'm doomed! 😂

lljkk · 10/07/2019 08:39

Hunt says the technology already exists (implies can be deployed quickly & affordably & will not be inconvenient to use).

Hunt had no answer as to WHY the technology solution to Irish border hadn't been deployed already in last 3 yrs.

Hunt & BJ are both delusional, sigh. Just telling their voters what their voters want to believe.

Peregrina · 10/07/2019 08:45

Everything I read on here from No Dealers convinces me that the strongest motivation is now nihilism

A agree too. E.g. what Laws don't you like? Not going to answer, it's the principle. I haven't benefitted by EU laws. A dozen named - they don't affect me. And on. The are like members of a cult.

Whisky2014 · 10/07/2019 08:57

I also listened to John major and thought he was bloody good.

1tisILeClerc · 10/07/2019 09:09

If you want to get really worried about the state of the UK, read the comments on any topics (stories) related to Brexit in the Daily Mail or Express particularly, but other papers too.
Some wear a lobotomy as a 'badge of honour'.

Grinchly · 10/07/2019 09:09

Yes Major was superb. What a novelty to hear someone stating principle and national interest must come before party. And what a sad state of affairs that is.

Mistigri · 10/07/2019 09:25

God, yes, wasn't Major amazing? I mean that in a totally non-partisan sense: he was authoritative without being overbearing, articulate, calm, almost presidential.

Either he's improved with age (until Brexit he was mainly associated in my memory with the "cone-line" Grin) or standards in public life have declined drastically in the last 20 years.

1tisILeClerc · 10/07/2019 09:33

{or standards in public life have declined drastically in the last 20 years.}

I think with the rise of social media there has been a rapid decline in consideration of people and things.
It is all too easy to text literally anyone whereas communication required a bit of thought and effort. Getting a pen and paper to write to 'the newspaper' required effort and thought, even if you were enraged by something. Now you can tweet people with orange hair and call them anything you want.
Voting for someone to be evicted from Love Island or No 10, what's the difference?

He also spoke very plainly and very clearly without beating it around the bush and giving direct answers. Which is totally the opposite of BJ...who is taking on board some of the most damning habits of TM (repeat the same thing over and over! They’ll believe it!) only with more enthusiasm and not sounding like a broken disk with a sad song...(a broken disk with a pop song?)

jasjas1973 · 10/07/2019 09:42

Both BJ and Hunt will change their stance when either become PM.

The Govt is still a minority administration and the tory party is still split over Brexit.

PM JH or BJ will find, just as May did, that departing on a no-deal is all but impossible, the damage to the economy will destroy any chance of the Cons winning the next GE and with Lab doing so poorly in the polls, its certainly no guarantee they'd vote for a snap GE to assist the Cons.....just let the tories and the rest of us, stew in the mess of the countries own making.

I see little change in the direction the country will take under a new PM.

Mistigri · 10/07/2019 09:44

We are now comparing Major with todays lot. Not difficult to shine.

I do think he's improved with age too. Age has brought him gravitas and a willingness to say things that won't please.

Lonelycrab · 10/07/2019 09:45

Strongly agree with your post at 9.33 leclerc. I think social media has played a pivotal role in where we are right now. Every group has its own echo chamber, and people feel validated when there are large groups of others that feel the same way. You could argue that this is just another echo chamber, in many ways it is, but at least this one seems home to intelligent balanced discussions on the most part.

I'm away hester sadly otherwise I'd have been there.

I do find the idea that "ladies" shouldn't swear rather fucking quaint 🙄

I'm really busy atm dealing with the aftermath of a small house fire (we were all fine) and trying to get another voluntary group up and running.

But I'm reading and, as usual, very thankful this thread exists.

CrunchyCarrot · 10/07/2019 09:50

Thanks Red Flowers

A wood pigeon placemark - this is the young one who was in our garden, now flying amongst the stars, bless him.

Proroguing Parliament over an internal corruption scandal that affected only MP's is one thing but Brexit is a national decision that will affect the country for decades to come.

The two situations really aren't comparable.

Brexit has put politicians under the spotlight like no other issue ever could, we are now seeing them for what they always have been..... self serving and corrupt.
