Westminstenders: It couldn't get any worse... Until today

We are trapped in the tailspin of the end of the UK. Firmly headed downward and getting more and more frenzied and desperate.

Even the most sensible of types like David Allen Green have finally noticed that Brexit isn't about leaving the EU it's about the frenzied and wilful destruction of our state instutions and structure. The collapse of the civil service, of our justice system, our democratic institutions and social order. All in the name of rule Britannia, a warped sense of taking back control to preserve an ideal that never existed and an idea of sovereignity that simply was a fantasy.

We move ever closer to Johnson becoming Prime Minister and a life under President Trump.

Joy.

Ode to Joy really isn't that bad.

I just have to hope that Johnson gets in, and immediately loses a VoNC, followed by a GE. The result of which will be anybodies guess.

Songsofexperience · 16/07/2019 10:14

I'd prefer a referendum. Labour led by Corbyn may not win and Lord know what would happen then.

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 10:21

Bar in mind that as with GM crops, I suspect food labelling will be relaxed an awful lot, so it won't be easy to choose your meat anymore. Probably with injunctions in place to prevent disclosure of the true sources ?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2019 10:26

Hunt and Johnson are only interested in the leadership election, so will say what the Tory members want to hear

They are not taking seriously what happens after 24 July, just retreating into fantasy,
because anything except No Deal means they will be crucified as Remainers

The HoC / Corbyn only has until about 25 July to propose a VoNC, to avoid any resulting GE running over Brexit Day - and May / BJ refusing to ask for an extension

The next 10 days will be absolutely critical

  • I hope enough MPs realise this and don't assume that they can give BJ enough rope until September / October
Icantreachthepretzels · 16/07/2019 11:50

I'm going on the march on Saturday - though I don't know where the start point is Confused

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 13:16

How will you know where it has come from?atm you know it conforms to a min (eu) std.

I'll ask my butcher. I'm pretty sure he knows where his stock comes from.

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 13:26

I'll ask my butcher. I'm pretty sure he knows where his stock comes from.

And if he doesn't know ? Or, to be more precise, if the labelling regulations become so relaxed (or strict) that it's impossible to tell ?

Don't assume things will remain the same. In fact, it's a bit dim to expect them to, since "we voted for change" ....

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 13:38

And if he doesn't know ? Or, to be more precise, if the labelling regulations become so relaxed (or strict) that it's impossible to tell ?

Then I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I prefer to remain optimistic where I can ease I'll get old and bitter and I'd rather avoid that!

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 13:39

Else, not ease!

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 13:40

And I still think that someone somewhere will supply the non-chlorinated market. As there will be demand.

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 13:48

The public want what the public get ...

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 16/07/2019 13:50

That’s my hope too peregrina

Bad times - Liam Fox sounds like a voice of reason and I actually want Bozo to be the next PM.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 13:56

The public want what the public get

I think you're being too pessimistic.

In the same way there's a market for corn fed, free range, etc birds now there'll be a market and supply for non-chlorinated.

Same as you can choose hormone or non-hormone in Oz etc now.

CalamBalam · 16/07/2019 14:03

It may be that it'll be easy to choose when you're buying chicken in the supermarket but when you're ordering a pizza or buying a pub lunch it might get a bit murkier. Most cheaper end of the market food places will go for the chlorine stuff. Will companies be duty bound to say they're using it in their dishes. Who knows!

jasjas1973 · 16/07/2019 14:06

In the same way there's a market for corn fed, free range, etc birds now there'll be a market and supply for non-chlorinated

Of course but with no min standards and meat coming in from all over the world how easy will it be to hoodwink the consumer?

The problem isn't with a local butcher and local supply but with mass produced food stuffs.

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 14:15

I think you're being too pessimistic

Hard to believe that anyone living in the UK these past three years, and paying attention can consider there is such a thing.

Sorry, I believe things will get a whole lot worse. To such an extent that I'll probably be singled out as the voice of unreasonable optimism in years to come ....

borntobequiet · 16/07/2019 14:16

I might PM people who say they are going in case a meet up is possible, if that's OK

LonelyTiredandLow · 16/07/2019 14:18

Pound hits 27 month low amongst No Deal Brexit fears. I'd say it was about the backstop, but hey...

Got 'Going Underground' in my head now, thanks DGR.

LouiseCollins28 · 16/07/2019 14:20

Anyone else on here following the confirmation process of the EU Commission Presidecy with "Pres Elect" Ursula von der Leyen being voted on this afternoon/eve? Fascinating to see how this will play out.

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 14:31

If I want to follow the progress of unelected leaders, there's enough in the UK at the moment. Seems a bit unpatriotic to ignore than in favour of some Eurocrat ....

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 14:33

Got 'Going Underground' in my head now, thanks DGR.

We'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns ...

and the most chillingly prescient lyric:

As the brass bands play and feet start to pound ....

When Paul Weller was good ...

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2019 14:42

Yes, partly following.

What is interesting too is how she is trying to gain as much support as possible:
by repeating that the WA and backstop cannot be renegotiated
and that after No Deal, the WA main terms will be preconditions for future talks

There seems no significant support for a new deal / dumping the RoI,
which shows how far off BJ & co are, insisting that the EU will blink if No Deal looms.
A new deal would require unanimous support from the E27 heads of govt and also EP approval.

We're screwed if BJ's plan B really is No Deal.

After No Deal, the UK will be less able to export to most markets than before
and many in the EU now, like the US, India, China .... see this as an exceptional opportunity to permanently grab business & markets from the UK

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2019 14:44

Tom Peck@tompeck 🤦🏻‍♀️

Now @BorisJohnson is genuinely saying that we, the UK, "can use the leverage of a trade deal to get the USA to raise their own standards (on animal welfare)."

Yes that's definitely going to happen isn't it.
The US farming industry will bend to our whim.

Utter garbage. As always

DGRossetti · 16/07/2019 14:52

To be honest, until we get a vote or something, I really can't see the point of expending energy in discussing things we can't affect.

The willingness of the MSM to do so makes me wonder what it's being used to obscure Hmm

I notice the Prince Andrew story has disappeared - although it may be that it's because there is a 2 week window for objections to the unsealing of testimony ?

In other news, it seems Breibart is yesterdays news ....

www.newstatesman.com/world/north-america/2019/07/rise-and-fall-breitbart

The Trump era has not, it seems, been kind to Breitbart. The rabid far-right media company, which was previously run by Trump’s hyper-nationalist former campaign CEO and chief strategist Steve Bannon, has experienced plummeting traffic since the president for whom they were one of the leading cheerleaders took office.

According to a report in the Washington Post earlier this month, the site has lost 75 per cent of its readership since Trump was inaugurated, going from more than 17 million monthly unique browsers at the beginning of 2017 to less than 5 million in May 2019. What went wrong?

(contd)

So beware, oh my gentle friend of all the skin you breed .. they have a nasty habit that is they bite the hand that feeds

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2019 14:52

DG I believe premium meat & poultry will still be available after a US FTA
BUT
it will be a low volume and hence very expensive niche product as the current economies of scale will have been lost

It may be in a tiny corner of Waitrose, or Fortnum & Mason's
The HoC and the genuinely rich - not the 100k p.a. folk - will have relable sources to order from

... although that US FTA being negotiated and approved by Congress looks some years ahead,
far too late to "rescue us" in time after No Deal
