We are trapped in the tailspin of the end of the UK. Firmly headed downward and getting more and more frenzied and desperate.

Even the most sensible of types like David Allen Green have finally noticed that Brexit isn't about leaving the EU it's about the frenzied and wilful destruction of our state instutions and structure. The collapse of the civil service, of our justice system, our democratic institutions and social order. All in the name of rule Britannia, a warped sense of taking back control to preserve an ideal that never existed and an idea of sovereignity that simply was a fantasy.

We move ever closer to Johnson becoming Prime Minister and a life under President Trump.

Joy.

Ode to Joy really isn't that bad.

"Fox said potential complications could include different rules across American states "

An FTA with the USA just gives trade access at the federal level

However, a lot of purchasing is done at the state level
and many states have their own policy of Buy American and won't consider foreign goods or services, even when cheaper & better

Canadian and Mexican firms have found this problem, despite NAFTA - and we are unlikely to get as deep a deal as NAFTA

So although the US market is huge, we would still be excluded from a lot of it, even with an FTA

jasjas1973 · 15/07/2019 12:50

I'd have hoped that Liam Fox, as an experienced politician and brexitier, would have realised this long ago.
Trumps "America first" policy and our trade surplus with the US, means any FTA will be in one direction only.

Seems our politicians are ideas people only.

yolofish · 15/07/2019 17:24

Red's fred title seems horribly prophetic, as we get ever deeper into the mire.

IDRIS ELBA cast as NIGEL FARAGE in movie about ex-UKIP leader

A source within a major Hollywood studio has confirmed that the English actor Idris Elba has been chosen to play Nigel Farage in an upcoming biographical movie about the ex-UKIP leader.

He also said that the star of The Wire and Luther has the option to remain in the role should there be any further movies in the franchise.

Although he was unwilling to confirm the name of the studio who will be involved, we have seen leaked emails to confirm that Disney will be releasing the movie in 2021.

He added: ‘Not only does Idris have an English accent, but he is also fantastic at giving speeches – he couldn’t possibly be more ‘Nigel’ if he tried!’

‘He isn’t looking forward to shaving off that iconic beard, but he looks fantastic in hunting gear and a pair of yellow Wellington boots – the Boxing Day scenes will look incredibly authentic.’

In a further shocking development, it has also been confirmed that Donald Trump has signed up to play himself in scenes where he welcomes Nigel to Trump Towers.

According to a close friend of Mr Trump, the president’ caught the acting bug’ after a cameo appearance in Home Alone 2 where he is seen giving Macauley Culkin directions at The Plaza in New York.

He is said to be ‘incredibly excited’ about working with Idris.

A Tweet said: ‘Can’t wait! I loved him in Shawshank Redemption!’

‘He’s a great actor. A very great actor. He acts, I can tell you.’

‘Some of his films are classics. Big classics, big, big classics.’

‘It’s gonna be yuge.’

Piss take website, DGR?

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2019 21:27

I would love to see Farage's reaction if he were ever played by a black actor ! Grin
and Trump is certainly egoistic enough to want to play himself, gven half a chance

(no, you can't fool Wesministenders that easily, DG )

Insect-filled chocolates, rat hair noodles, and maggoty orange juice: The reality of a Brexit trade deal with Trump

The US wants to outlaw labels of origin, for food they export to us - to make it difficult to boycott

https://www.businessinsider.com/rat-hairs-and-maggots-may-warned-of-reality-of-us-brexit-trade-deal-2018-10?r=UK

Insect-filled chocolates, rat hair-infested noodles, and orange juice containing maggots are just some of the "horrors" UK consumers could be forced to accept
if post-Brexit Britain signs a wide-ranging trade deal with the USA.

In the US, producers adhere to a "Defect Levels Handbook,"
which sets out the maximum number of foreign bodies like maggots, insect fragments and mould that can be in food products before they are put on the market.

For example, US producers are allowed to include up to 30 insect fragments in a 100-gram jar of peanut butter;

as well as 11 rodent hairs in a 25-gram container of paprika;

or 3 milligrams of mammalian excreta (typically rat or mouse excrement) per each pound of ginger.

In the EU there are no allowable limits for foreign bodies in food products.

MPs have told Business Insider they are worried that a UK-US trade deal designed by Brexiteers could open the floodgates to contaminated food.

"Clearly, The Tories have some very unpleasant surprises for UK dinner tables if they have their way with a fast-track trade deal with the United States,"
Bill Esterson, Labour MP and Shadow Trade Minister, told BI.

"We know the Tories are keen on chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-fed beef
but they surely cannot expect that the British public will be happy to swallow these other horrors."

Caroline Lucas, ex-leader of the Green party and supporter of the People's Vote campaign, added:
"This is the gruesome reality of the US trade deal being touted by Liam Fox as one of the great benefits of leaving the EU."

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2019 21:45

Unfortunately, that's not a spoof
Neither is this:

Adam Bienkovv@AdamBienkov*

When Liam Fox starts becoming the relative voice of sanity on Brexit, you know things aren't going well.

Boris Johnson's plans for a Brexit trade deal with Trump are 'in breach of European law,' trade secretary warns

I gather that negotiating rollovers, as Fox has been doing, is legal, just not completely new deals.

https://www.businessinsider.com/liam-fox-boris-johnson-trump-trade-deal-breach-european-law-2019-7?

"We can't negotiate anything with the US until after we have left the European Union,"
Fox told the BBC Radio 4 "Today" program on Monday.

"It would be in breach of European law for us to do that."
....
Sources close to Johnson suggested that the plan was to strike a "limited" deal with the US in just one area of goods only.
.....
"I've no idea what that [limited deal] would be," Fox told the BBC.

"That will take time
and you have got the added complication, just remember, we are now getting very close to the American pre-election year
where it is quite hard to get things through Congress

so even if you negotiate them quickly you wouldn't be able to ratify them."
< and Congress may not ratify anything that damages the GFA, i.e. without an NI-only backstop >

MotherOfSoupDragons · 15/07/2019 22:03

Tory MPs won't be eating any of that shit, so why would they care?

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/07/2019 22:28

I've had thoughts about becoming vegetarian if the meat on offer over here is predominately US; also now thinking is it worth the queues and expense of a day trip to Calais to be able to buy food that has zero contamination? It's all so depressing.

Whisky2014 · 15/07/2019 22:55

Chicken is predominantly from UK. 2 sisters food group in angus coupar supply all chicken in scotland and alot in england.

Shame about beef and pork though..

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2019 23:41

Chlorinated chicken would be cheaper, hence forecast to replace the domestic UK product

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 05:44

I'm hoping that our butcher keeps his local supply, even if it's dearer. There will be demand for non-chlorinated chicken so I doubt it'll vanish. We'll just have to reduce our intake if it gets really expensive.

1tisILeClerc · 16/07/2019 07:36

There was an article in the papers about the terrible conditions of a UK producer of chickens a few weeks back. Food in the EU is rather more expensive than in the UK, although I doubt it is an accurate reflection on better conditions throughout. I don't think that industrial scale hormones and chemical treatment are used though.

LonelyTiredandLow · 16/07/2019 07:46

I thought our trouble with chickens is we rear them but send them back to EU for cleaning/plucking and packaging?

LonelyTiredandLow · 16/07/2019 07:49

1tis I think I posted about the Brazilian (?) owned farm a few threads ago. There is a lot of call from Leavers about animal rights. Leavers who clearly haven't watched things on Netflix about the issue which shows just how much worse intensive farming is in USA.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/07/2019 07:49

Hmmm. I need to investigate the chicken issue!

Not all chicken farms will be in the condition of the ones exposed recently though.

wherearemychickens · 16/07/2019 07:52

Oh it's all so insane. Where would you emigrate to if you were looking for somewhere socially liberal with a working judiciary and where the most vulnerable in society are cared for?

wherearemychickens · 16/07/2019 07:55

Also, there is soooo much stupid in the comments on Twitter. I'm selectively challenging people - trying to make sure I'm not replying to bots anyway - and even when they come back to me, they don't answer the questions, just repeat the inanities like 'they need us more than we need then'. Possibly it's not even worth bothering but it is annoying me just reading the unchallenged nonsense now.

1tisILeClerc · 16/07/2019 08:14

From Guardian, presumably elsewhere.
{Hunt and Johnson: the backstop is dead and can't be in any EU deal}

They don't really understand, do they?

borntobequiet · 16/07/2019 08:15

Haven't posted for a while as have been trying to distract myself from Brexit and the horrors of Trump for a while by embarking on a (late) mid-life crisis. So going to a festival next month for the first time in years...
Anyway, thanks for all these posts. Is anyone going on the march on Saturday? I wouldn't expect it to be big as many will be off on holidays but I want to go because at present it's the only way I think my voice gets heard (even if then ignored).

Peregrina · 16/07/2019 08:58

{Hunt and Johnson: the backstop is dead and can't be in any EU deal}
They don't really understand, do they?

Oh they understand only too well. It wasn't our fault, we wanted a deal but the EU bullied us. And the true BeLeavers will swallow it hook, line and sinker.

I am hoping to go on the march on Saturday but am dithering a bit because I will be on my own this time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/07/2019 09:04

I'm not sure if I'm going on the march or not at the moment. Probably.

jasjas1973 · 16/07/2019 09:07

I'm hoping that our butcher keeps his local supply, even if it's dearer. There will be demand for non-chlorinated chicken so I doubt it'll vanish

How will you know where it has come from?atm you know it conforms to a min (eu) std.

However, i doubt there will be a UK/US trade deal, i think this reality is dawning on Liam Fox, rather late to the party but Trump is a highly unstable individual, we are a tiny market for their Agri, China and India are far more important.

Once either Hunt or Johnson are in power, their rhetoric will change.

RedToothBrush · 16/07/2019 09:10

Alex Wickham@alexwickham
Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt both say they would not accept a 5 year time limit or a unilateral exit clause from the backstop - both candidates taking a far harder line than Tory rebels previously and putting the UK firmly on course for no deal
