Westministenders: Hustings and Humilation

Round 1 has passed.
Boris is winning. But these are the Tories. Surprises might yet happen.

But the chances are the lying buffon is full speed ahead to be the next PM. As long as he manages to keep his mouth shut.

Unfortunately being Prime Minister involves talking. This might prove to be something that bursts the BorisMania rather rapidly.

A GE is still very much on the cards.

And we might face the Constitutional and undemocratic shutting down of parliament to satisfy the Tory Faithless.

Meanwhile the EU couldn't give less shits. They just think we are wasting the time we were granted in good faith.

31st October beckons with No Deal.

Portillo on Chuka and the sad demise of his political career last night - like watching your maiden aunt become a streetwalker Grin

Wonder how Chuka feels about trains?

TheABC · 14/06/2019 16:48

Some interesting choices here and it's reassuring to read about the younger (and frankly wiser) politicians who are keeping their heads down and could become leaders in the aftermath. I don't rate the SNP as a government party, based on a lot of Scottish mumsnetters feedback, but I do rate Nicola herself for her deft handling of this Westminster debacle.

Violetparis · 14/06/2019 16:48

Agree Chuka has zero credibility, unless he calls a by election which he won't.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 16:52

Boris's backers illustrate what a hard right shit he is:

Patel especially, but also Truss, Cox - I heard JRM too ? - and apparently most of the ERG

Anyone who thinks that's a team to vote for, to be enthusiastic about, is very much on the hard right too

That Boris with that pile of shits has such a lead in MPs shows how far right the Tories have swung

TheABC · 14/06/2019 16:54

Also, if anyone is on the Blinklist app, take a look at today's free book, called Crash. It's about the 2008 crisis and the way the financial crash has poisoned politics since. In particular, the vote for Trump, Brexit and Golden Dawn in Greece all comes from a place of rage against the elite. It's not something you can reason away. Brussels could offer a years supply of free food and a cruise ship holiday for everyone in this country - and they will still be voted down as "the enemy".

I am beginning to think that the only way out of this mess will involve a civil war.

tobee · 14/06/2019 16:57

With Putin fanning the flames. At the very least.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 16:59

Boris is neither a Leave nor Remainer, just a Boriser

He just miscalculated about the ref and has been lumbered with having to support Brexit,
which he knows will be disastrous for the country

However, he would set fire to his granny if it helped his career,
so don't expect any rescue from him

tobee · 14/06/2019 17:00

He deserves all he's likely to get BCF

tobee · 14/06/2019 17:01

But we don't

howabout · 14/06/2019 17:03

ABC Mervyn King is interesting and depressing on the 2008 crash.

Peregrina · 14/06/2019 17:04

Chuka has probably got more chance of keeping his political career going if he can get adopted as the next LibDem Candidate for Streatham - much more than he would have done as ChangeUK.

If you go back to the years 2000 - 2010 then you can see that the LibDems came second to Labour, so I would say his retaining the seat is not outside the bounds of possibility.

DGRossetti · 14/06/2019 17:13

Some interesting choices here and it's reassuring to read about the younger (and frankly wiser) politicians who are keeping their heads down and could become leaders in the aftermath.

The problem there is what about accusations that they did #### all when it was really important. Like now ?

Why should aspiring politicians coming up behind them feel they need to defer to an older guard that sat on it's hands and arse when it really mattered ????

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 17:14

Mark Carney was Governor of the Bank of Canada during the financial crisis and helped Canada avoid the worst of it

In contrast, Mervyn King was pathetic, so I don't take his opinions seriously

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 17:22

A country of purists: the polling which lays bare the death of any compromise on Brexit

At least Remain is 12% ahead of No Deal

https://www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2019/06/14/a-country-of-purists-the-polling-which-lays-bare-the-death

The vast majority of respondents chose either Remain or No Deal as their top choice (45% and 33% respectively),
but they were also the most popular bottom choices (42% of people ranked No Deal as their bottom choice and another 42% did the same for Remain).

Soft Brexit and May's Deal are the most popular second and third choices respectively, but hardly anyone's first or last choice.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 17:30

Phillips opposes May's extra public spending for education, mental health and "other socially progressive projects"
Also her pledge to commit to zero net carbon emissions

So he's just spouting the usual rightwing shit, worried it endangers Boris's tax giveaway to the better off

The poor & vulnerable would benefit from more spending on public services - the "trickle down" of the rich pissing on the poor doesn't work

NoWordForFluffy · 14/06/2019 17:43

In contrast, Mervyn King was pathetic, so I don't take his opinions seriously

He also thinks we should no deal, which means his opinion holds zero weight with me.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 17:49

Yes, I wasn't impressed by him even before he became one of the uber-wealthy fuckers wanting a No Deal smash & grab

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/06/2019 17:55

pmk

1tisILeClerc · 14/06/2019 17:56

Mervyn King's reasoning was 'adequate'as far as it went but he left out a lot of factors that totally undermine the 'good' bits. I forget the details now but it was like Farage and JRM's 'pronouncements', the first two of three headline sentences are OK, even correct, but then it rapidly falls apart when it gets to anything like detail. Similarly Patrick Minford, yes the finance industry was 'great' but for his intentions to work most of the manufacturing industry gets trashed.
Of course IF the UK wanted to work that way, with the main income being in finances etc and accept that most of the potential 'manufacturing' workforce is simply paid to sit at home it might be nice, until boredom sets in.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/06/2019 18:11

I think few people would have a problem being paid to be at leisure - I certainly work to live, not the other way round ! -

.... the problem is that those not in employment woud be paid a pittance and be unable to enjoy that leisure
