David Davis apparently got turned away when he first went to vote for not having his Pass. It's good to see that if they want to inflict voter ID on the general public they insist on it for themselves.

My local MP is backing McVey. Shock Hmm

Ellie56 · 13/06/2019 11:27

In order to block No Deal Parliament would have to have an alternate instruction for Government and whereas she was prepared to countenance Revoke there was no majority for it. Enthusiasm for 2nd Ref also seems to be waning as the realisation of the prolonging the agony it would involve starts to dawn.

But might this change the nearer we get to the cliff edge?

Peregrina · 13/06/2019 11:29

Erm, I don't know why that posted twice!

howabout · 13/06/2019 11:31

In that vein a thought provoking piece on ID cards and David Davis' views.

I think it might go the other way. More enthusiasm for no deal tbh.

Does anyone think that Javid's exclusion from the State Banquet was anything but racism? Would it have happened had he been either white or not of Muslim origin? How I wish someone had had the guts to say No to Trump - we are the hosts, we decide on the guest list.

Ellie56 · 13/06/2019 11:42

Eek Red do you think so?

Better go and review the stockpiles...

prettybird · 13/06/2019 11:42

Sky News has been running a wee item consisting of interviews with various EU "experts" (yes, I know Wink): the former head of the EU Legal Civil Service/Dept; a research fellow at the European Policy group(?); and Dutch or Belgian MEP who is an incumbent on the EU Brexit steering group.

They all point out how the Conservative Leadership candidates are living in cloud cuckoo land and the MEP finishes the piece with a killer blow, "If the UK leaves with No Deal having failed in its negotiations with the EU, how do they expect to negotiate other deals? Confused

ContinuityError · 13/06/2019 11:43

Given McVey’s broadcasting career, why is she so inarticulate when being interviewed?

metro.co.uk/2019/06/12/esther-mcvey-branded-esther-mcvague-revealing-lack-foreign-aid-knowledge-9931269/

Could it be because she is completely out of her depth?

RedToothBrush · 13/06/2019 11:46

It'll be seen as a 'clean break' to end Brexit.

Except it will be anything but that. But it will have discharged the mandate of the referendum. And thats all that matters to a lot of people.

In terms of political toxicity Labour and the Tories just want the Brexit Party to go away and for the LD to not have the clear Remain policy.

Its not going to work like that though. Its simplistic nonsense. But its what their polling is saying people want....

It's a good question.

Before I read about her background I genuinely thought she was an idiot.

She actually has a law degree, masters, etc.

So now I think she's an educated idiot.

LouiseCollins28 · 13/06/2019 11:47

I confess I didn't see Lisa Nandy on Peston last night, but for me she's still wrong, sadly, for all that she says that she gets it. That she's prepared to vote for Revoke lets the cat out of the bag.

Her view that Parliament must have an alternative instruction I would hope is just clumsy wording on her part. Parliament doesn't get to instruct the government of the day, it just doesn't, it can give its support to a motion (a majority vote for it), or withhold that support (i.e. failing to secure a majority).

What Parliament must have shown before Oct 2019 is a clearly expressed will for what alternative to "No Deal" it will support. Parliament has been asked this question on 4? occasions and has withheld that support each time from the government's proposal and any other one.

RedToothBrush · 13/06/2019 11:49

Alex Wickham @alexwickham
Tory leadership candidates have been told they have to pay CCHQ £150,000 if they get to the final two, to pay for the hustings around the country

Big buy-in (but Jeremy Hunt could probably pay it with his loose change)

This is problematic in its own right...

Tory party skint then?

X-post Blush

Peregrina · 13/06/2019 11:55

Downing Street are now telling us that May when Home Secretary did not attend the State Banquet for Obama. What we are not being told was whether she was invited or not? Perhaps not, but it was not as contentious in that case.

DGRossetti · 13/06/2019 12:02

Apparently "the Saj" has signed off Assanges extradition to the US ...

howabout · 13/06/2019 12:02

Louise in fairness to Lisa I was paraphrasing from memory. Your more nuanced explanation is indeed a more accurate reflection of the Parliamentary / Government relationship but semantics aside the basic point is still as you acknowledge that Parliament has failed to express its will.

1tisILeClerc · 13/06/2019 12:03

{They all point out how the Conservative Leadership candidates are living in cloud cuckoo land and the MEP finishes the piece with a killer blow, "If the UK leaves with No Deal having failed in its negotiations with the EU, how do they expect to negotiate other deals? }

This is of course a MASSIVE issue as not only has the UK failed to negotiate so far with the EU of which it is a member, the UK has no idea of what it wants or where it will get it from come 1 November.
