Happy that the NHS is up for grabs?

Genuine question: if you voted leave what do you think about the NHS being up for grabs as part of a US trade deal?
How did we go from 'lets divert the £350m from the EU to the NHS' (big fat lie as we all know) to opening it up to grabby US healthcare and pharmaceutical companies?
Surely nobody in their right mind can think this is a good thing?

FAKE NEWS

Even Trump has backtracked.

I'm glad that person visited this week. His mumblings on our precious NHS won us Peterborough. Smile

fake news ?
Trump back tracking in public doesn't make something fake news. It just means even he has realized that saying to the British public is very unpopular.

Exactly.
It's what No Deal means. No Guarantees.

Nor does what Trump said make any difference - the sale of the NHS will still be on the table, as far as the US is concerned.

The difference between being in the EU as a trading block, and with the USA is that with the EU the UK is an equal partner and can negotiate on equal terms and tariffs are zero.
With the USA, the UK will have no say and will just be told where to sign. The UK would have a relationship with the USA probably similar to Puerto Rico, which to Trump was 'Who, Where'?

Can I just say to the posters mentioning that the NHS sometimes pays private companies to deliver services hence nothing wrong with US companies having access, the NHS still has control over this. Buying in a service is very different to handing over full control of it.

Did Fromage visit between and advise the new spin. It will be like Leadsome vis a vis job losses etc.

'He said it, so everyone knew the NHS was on the table just like everything else in a trade deal with the US.' Despite the lying weasels again saying 'FAKE NEWS' straightaway.

Woody Johnson didn't say 'that is not trade, is it?'

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 10/06/2019 23:33

To everyone mentioning TTIP, don't forget that most of the current candidates for PM would have signed it as it first came - which would have included opening up the NHS, allowing private companies to sue the government, etc.. We have gasp the French to thank for refusing to accept it.

Why do you think they're going to suddenly decide not to sign up to something as bad, if not worse?

It's pathetically shoddy thinking.

Have you been listening to James O'Brien on LBC? Wink

On QT last week, Piers Morgan indicated that his interview with Donald Trump took place immediately after the Trump/May press conference - Morgan joked/suggested that Theresa May had hurriedly explained what the NHS was in the 5/10 minute walk down to the GMB interview room.

Buying in sone services is one thing but there is a probability that it would go much further. It also begs the question as to how a 'private' service can do a 'job' and make a lot of profit whereas the NHS seemingly can't do it 'in house', suggesting that management/planning/investment may not be up to scratch, as the NHS does not need to make the 'profit' element.

1tisILeClerc · 11/06/2019 08:17

sone = some, the coffee hasn't got through yet.

Peregrina · 11/06/2019 08:52

I have come to the conclusion that the batshit Leavers who want Leave at any cost, are more than happy that the NHS is up for grabs. They probably think it won't affect them, because they will still be able to pay for their private treatment.

The NHS is a very large - perhaps THE largest - single buyer from the pharma industry, and it is ruthless about value for money. So it has been very successful in driving drug prices down, at the expense of drug company profits. That situation won't survive a US trade deal, because the pharma lobby has enormous influence over US government policy making.

This is at the heart of the matter. If you understand one thing about the - admittedly complex - situation, it should be this.

dreichuplands · 11/06/2019 16:00

Pharma is a massive multi billion industry in the USA, Trump knows that perfectly well.
In fact he is interested in reducing drug costs for US citizens. Pharma companies are pushing back hard in this. If he could offer them a deregulated UK market that might help soften the blow. Trump is only about what he sees as US interests, low UK drug prices are not in US interests.
