Why on earth would Donald Trump agree to meet Jeremy Corbyn

Because Corbyn is Leader of the Opposition to HMG?

And why is Trump meeting with Farage, who has no position in Parliament, and with IDS and Paterson, and with Gove?

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 11:44

History does not appear to be the Leavers strongest suit.

Be fair, they have to remember their names. Something has to go.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 05/06/2019 11:44

You know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

I'll remember that when the NHS is sold off.

Southwestten · 05/06/2019 11:45

Glad you enjoyed the elites dining out at tax payers expense though.
Ghost did you object to the state banquet qiven in honour of the Obamas during their visit a few years ago?

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 11:45

Poker ? If Trump leaves taking Tower Bridge, we'll know who lost.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 05/06/2019 11:48

My point is leavers dislike the establishment and elites. They also dislike foreign politicians meddling in British affairs. Until Trump met Liz that is...

ContinuityError · 05/06/2019 11:48

If Trump plays poker the same way he plays golf ... Wink

Clavinova · 05/06/2019 11:50

Yes, but Trump also said that the UK could only have one deal - with the US. All trade with the rest of the world would have to be on US terms.

Did he? When?

Press release today;

Liam Fox announces ‘gamechanger’ financial support package for UK SME exporters

"Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr Liam Fox, will announce major steps that will unlock finance for SMEs exporting to emerging markets."

"A financial support package for small to medium sized business (SMEs) will be announced as Dr Fox speaks at a celebration of 100 years of UK Export Finance’s (UKEF) backing for international trade today (Wednesday 5 June)."

"This is the first time such an extensive financing package has been made available to small businesses exporting to fast-growing emerging markets from the UK."

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 11:50

It's hard to avoid feeling that like looking into deep space, and realising that the light you see from stars is very very old; when you look to the US, you are seeing an older version of Britain. One that somehow ossified after the rebellion. Quite aside from archaic patterns of speech ("fall" anyone ?) there seems to be something quaint about US society. Ironic, really, given they imagine they are somehow progressive.

Of course "America" is a big place ...

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 11:52

Did he? When?

Funny, Leaver assertions of unicorns and sunny uplands must never be challenged. But a throwaway remark from a remainer - has to be verified in triplicate.

Anyway, it must be true, Farage said it.

1tisILeClerc · 05/06/2019 11:55

{Liam Fox announces ‘gamechanger’ financial support package for UK SME exporters}

Great, another pledge. Where has the support been for the last umpteen years?
Their track record is too little too late so now it is 'vote for me and I will promise you the world'. It is about as subtle as 'get your kit off and I will make you a movie star'.

LonelyTiredandLow · 05/06/2019 11:56

I also think Leavers don't see America as 'forrin' mainly due to language. They fear not understanding people talking very much - see Nige and his scary London train journeys. It all ties in with the paranoia of EU being a superstate/totalitarian regime/nazi something or other. American's at least speak the same language, which is enough to fool a certain group into thinking they are 'like us'.

1tisILeClerc · 05/06/2019 11:58

{American's at least speak the same language,}

Americans speak a similar language but mess up the meaning of some important words.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 05/06/2019 11:59

Am I supposed to feel reassured that Liam Fox is on the business case for global Britain?

ContinuityError · 05/06/2019 12:00

Yes, but Trump also said that the UK could only have one deal - with the US. All trade with the rest of the world would have to be on US terms.

Did he? When?

Trump doesn’t need to explicitly state it - he’s already done it, as highlighted by David Henig:

Not only does President Trump want a one-sided trade agreement, he then also wants to tell us who we can trade with. The revised agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada includes a specific section which could penalise the latter two countries if they were to sign a trade agreement with China.

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 12:02

I also think Leavers don't see America as 'forrin' mainly due to language.

The most powerful uniting fact Brits and Yanks have is a deep seated reluctance to learn another language.

That said, there were Spanish language adverts and information signs on the NYC subway in the 90s.

LonelyTiredandLow · 05/06/2019 12:02

@Clavinova - the gov are going to regret that when we notice we don't have a new regulatory body set up for any imports or exports. How much advise on trade can a government give when they don't even kno which markets they will be able to trade with yet? Will they legal charges against our businesses from EU if we drop standards for US?

LonelyTiredandLow · 05/06/2019 12:03

Spelling - sorry! Blush

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 12:04

Trump doesn’t need to explicitly state it - he’s already done it, as highlighted by David Henig:

The worrying thing was, I made that up to show how remainers are always being put to the test, and Leavers will swallow any old shit.

Oh dear. Time for some therapy.

LonelyTiredandLow · 05/06/2019 12:05

@Clavinova - the gov are going to regret that when we notice we don't have a new regulatory body set up for any imports or exports. How much advice on trade can a government give when they don't even know which markets they will be able to trade with yet? Will they pay out for legal charges against our businesses from EU if we drop standards for US?

Peregrina · 05/06/2019 12:08

The cut and paste queen is here again. "Aiming to do Blah blah blah," is not 'has a signed and sealed agreement, coming into force this month'.

ContinuityError · 05/06/2019 12:09

DGR You couldn’t even make it up, eh? Grin

1tisILeClerc · 05/06/2019 12:14

With the possibility of a GE, and the fact that no incoming government can be bound by the previous, all that anyone can say is basically electioneering and has no validity. Some are more likely to be lying their heads off than others.

Clavinova · 05/06/2019 12:20

And why is Trump meeting with Farage, who has no position in Parliament, and with IDS and Paterson, and with Gove?

Michael Gove has a good chance of being the next PM in a few weeks (Corbyn will have to wait for a general election first and Labour are down 7% in the polls), Nancy Pelosi also met with the ERG Group, so I'm guessing that Trump's meeting is connected with that meeting and like it or not, Nigel Farage's Brexit Party is topping the Westminster election polls, having won the most seats in the EU elections.

ContinuityError · 05/06/2019 12:26

That’ll be the Gove that Trump claimed he didn’t know?
