Postal voting requires signature and date of birth verification.

But how do you check the person named is the person that put the "X" in the box ?

howabout · 03/06/2019 17:31

How do you prove the person at the polling station is the owner of the polling card?

Voter ID trials have not been a great success and numerous cases of votes denied.

prettybird · 03/06/2019 17:32

By the same token, how can you be sure that the person to whom you have awarded the proxy vote actually votes the way that you rather than they want? Confused

DGRossetti · 03/06/2019 17:38

How do you prove the person at the polling station is the owner of the polling card?

(taps microphone)

Is this thing on ?

What is it today with people refusing to see a point ?

My point about postal votes (not so entrenched I would remove them, but clearly not all are listening) is that once a set of - say 10 - are delivered to a house (and yes, there are easily some houses with 10 family members that can vote) then how do you know the "man of the house" hasn't taken them and completed them and posted them back ?

Even if they were minded enough to try that stunt in person at a polling station, it would be spotted.

In an age when Facebook can lose 3 billion "people" overnight, the idea of a voting system where no one ever has to be seen again doesn't calm me. It fucking terrifies me.

But as I'm wrong, back to Brexit. Anything happened while I was out ?

tobee · 03/06/2019 17:59

Agree with Red's post too!

So fed up with feeling miserable about this. And that's on a good day. Sad

1tisILeClerc · 03/06/2019 18:02

{What is it today with people refusing to see a point ?}
The point is blunt, the beast is dead....

Well Boris has started his campaign.
Brokenshire? has suggested that the 'no hope' candidates drop out.
Other than that the shit continues with minor 'orange related' headlines.

Peregrina · 03/06/2019 18:02

The sort of person who would commandeer ten postal votes would also stand over the family members to make sure they signed the forms.

Peregrina · 03/06/2019 18:05

If Johnson wins the Tory leadership contest, then I hope too that Brexit destroys his premiership.

1tisILeClerc · 03/06/2019 18:08

Putting a cross on a bit of paper, and actually getting what you actually hoped for, without twenty tons of shit that seems to come with it, is very unlikely. Typically you vote foe XXX policies and get ZZZ in return, even if it was the party you voted for.
Boris promising to cut taxes and put more funding into schools, or was it some other impossible combination.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 03/06/2019 18:10

I'm just happy most of the Tory candidates have discovered magic money trees to pay for their fantastic policies.

*Corbyn to speak at anti-Trump demonstration
And while we’re on the subject of the anti-Trump demonstration tomorrow, Labour has just announced that Jeremy Corbyn, the party leader, will be attending and speaking at it.

Earlier he tweeted a message of support for the protesters. (See 12.33pm.)*

All well and good...
See, he can find time to attend protests...

So WHY ON EARTH DOES HE KEEP SUPPORTING TRUMP'S WRECKING BALL AKA BREXIT!!

Songsofexperience · 03/06/2019 18:34

I have zero talent for drawing but I'd love to see a cartoon of Trump sat aside a huge wrecking ball (A la Miley Cyrus) with the word Brexit on it heading for Britain.
Sums up my views of that fucking mess.

tobee · 03/06/2019 18:49

We must have some cartoonist Westminsterenders people! Be great to have someone do this . Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 03/06/2019 19:04

Yes, Trump is here for his victory lap

The huge US agribusiness and pharmaceutical industries almost have the UK in their grip

Colonisation about to begin

BigChocFrenzy · 03/06/2019 19:05

Talking of zombies earlier, here's UKIP - how long until Farage's current party starts meltdown ?

Will it be before the USA colonisation FTA ?

Gerard Batten quits as Ukip leader

Hard-right leader’s replacement will be party’s fifth since Nigel Farage left in 2016

fairweathercyclist · 03/06/2019 19:05

*Personally, I think the default for voting should be in person. With proxies the default alternative.

There's too much scope for all sorts of malarkey with postal votes. Especially in cultures that already have a poor view of womens rights*

I agree. That said, Estonia has a great online voting system.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/06/2019 19:14

Estonia has had a paperless parliament for many years too (we had a tour while at summer school in Tallinn with our law school). Yes, it was an excuse for a piss up!

MockerstheFeManist · 03/06/2019 19:28

What chance a demob-happy Theresa May delivers a Love Actually moment?

Almost None.

But we live in hope.

(Not too late to redeem yourself, TM.)

TheMShip · 03/06/2019 21:32

Almost two hours since the last post? Have you all been out with me drinking red wine and eating tapas? eyes DGR and leClerc with suspicion

yolofish · 03/06/2019 21:37

MShip drinking wine, drowning sorrows (not just the orange one and Brexshit related). Can hear HMQ on telly from the other room, she sounds so bloody reasonable and diplomatic... shame she's surrounded by such complete and utter fuckwits. (not really a particular royalist, but HMQ deserves the devotion she receives). Oh fuck, he's started now, will have to turn it off!

borntobequiet · 03/06/2019 21:37

Perhaps everyone is lurking on the Royal Style and Gossip thread. I know I am. Nice tiaras and sashes for the Trump visit.

LonelyTiredandLow · 03/06/2019 21:56

I've been reporting fake accounts on fb. Am beginning to wonder if this will backfire on me spectacularly. After all I suspect many are military from USA, so doubtful FB will remove. It's really amazing how they can't seem to figure out which are purely posting political bias when their walls are full of it, not 1 single like or share on any of their posts, they have 0 friends and have names like Melania Rumpt Hmm

I think I may be grilled for SM deets if I ever attempt to visit USA again Grin. Times have changed since I was told "you've done your service to the country, ma'am" for translating a French businessman's business to a twitchy New Yorker on passport control back in 2002

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 02:32

What did Mrs Trump wear that was so awful?

Glad it wasn’t just me that was a bit mystified too - Googling makes me think it was the Burberry blouse with the medals print (which I thought made her look more like cabin crew than anything).

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 02:34

I think I may be grilled for SM deets if I ever attempt to visit USA again

Just filled out a ESTA application - there is now a Social Media section which is optional to complete (for now at least).

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 04:13

On a cheerier note, on Twitter BroochWarfare (Julie) @BroochW gives a good rundown on the dress style of the Royals v the Trumps at the state banquet.

Conclusion: So if I'm supposed to be reading secrets in the gems or whatever (haha, y'all have no idea how my brain works), that's it. The message tonight? "This is stuff you'll never have. Money doesn't even figure into it."

Oh, and some of the comments on the Trumps style are good (Ivanka looking like “a confused Amish”)Smile
