The Brexit Party are doing really well in the polls. I just hope they do as well in the election.
I think their slogan should be "Tell them again".
I would like to see a clean sweep of Brexiteers but I know that is not going to happen.
I have sent off my postal vote.

Surely nobody is stupid enough to think these were elections to the UK Parliament. Confused

PortiaCastis · 26/05/2019 19:03

Some of the comments seem to indicate that Nige will take us out tomorrow so I'm not really sure how that could happen

Bearbehind
I am all for the preservation of the EU, albeit with 'upgrades' as some policies do need sorting out because a 'failed' EU would be truly catastrophic for the West as a whole. If it degenerated the UK would be sucked down with it as the UK is not self sufficient to not to rely on it.
The UK is essentially just one country totalling about the size of France and with a similar GDP.
What the UK must not do is to deliberately have MEPs who are intent on damaging the EU from the 'inside' so either the UK leaves, or have at least a majority of Pro EU MEPs. there have been good ones in the past but the 'arch wrecker' Farage and the MSM with a continual diet of negativity have overshadowed their good work. It is one thing to not help your neighbours but truly despicable to deliberately damage what they are working for.
With the upcoming climate issues which will increase the number of people moving around the planet as areas become uninhabitable, and other risks, the time for the UK to have gone it's own way would have been say 20 years ago which would have changed the nature of the issues radically. The UK and all of Europe are sharing similar issues, ageing populations, climate change, the risk of terrorist actions and so on and it needs a united approach to deal with it. The 'Empire' and Colonial activities of the UK are long gone, since well before WW1.

And that’s the problem we face; too many people have no clue what is going on.

Sadly that includes parliament too.

1tisILeClerc · 26/05/2019 19:07

{Nige will take us out tomorrow}
That's very kind of him, I will have a nice pint.

PortiaCastis · 26/05/2019 19:10

Spot on Bear behind and I despair at the number of folk who don't have a clue

PortiaCastis · 26/05/2019 19:11

A Tarquins for me please Smile

1tisILeClerc · 26/05/2019 19:19

The most depressing thing is that the EU said that if the UK is leaving, then the WA will not be reopened and secondly that there will be no trade negotiations until after it is signed. This is very simple and the person in the street should be able to understand it, but horrifyingly the HoC and most of the cabinet haven't taken it on board, even to the extent that Boris has ignored it in the last day or two.
The UK does not have a choice in this matter.

Bearbehind · 26/05/2019 19:35

Every Leaver I speak to is still in the ‘they need us more than we need them’ mindset.

Living through no deal is truly the only thing that will change their minds.

I really do actually want that to happen now - it’s the only way.

Peregrina · 26/05/2019 20:01

I really do actually want that to happen now - it’s the only way.

Well I don't because an awful lot of other people will get damaged as well. If we could just let it be the Leavers who either celebrated the success of the easiest deals in history which are now three years overdue, or the failure, which is yet to come, I would say, OK.

Langrish · 26/05/2019 20:02

Mistigri

As far as I can tell the only non-Canute candidate is Rory Stewart who despite looking like an overeager sixth form politics student is the sane person's pick (and therefore has less chance than Larry the Cat of being the next prime minister).”

Agreed. One of those inexplicable oddities whom we could never figure out, just why had a man with his impressive CV, pragmatism and intellect become a Tory MP?
Unfortunately, as you say, he’s stitched himself up already by questioning the (proven to be extremely dubious) integrity of the darling of the shires.
God help us that it’s come to this.

Peregrina · 26/05/2019 20:05

You malign King Canute. I believe that he was trying to prove that even a King couldn't hold back the waves.

Bearbehind · 26/05/2019 20:10

If we could just let it be the Leavers who either celebrated the success of the easiest deals in history which are now three years overdue, or the failure, which is yet to come, I would say, OK

We can’t though.

There’s just too many people who refuse to listen to reason or logic.

The only way is to prove what a shit show it is going to be.

Tonight’s results are going to confirm this.

Mistigri · 26/05/2019 20:11

I know Peregrina.

Mind you most of the Tories* who are standing know that they can't hold back the tide either. They just need to be seen to try.

(* the ones with a three-figure IQ, so not McVey or Baker or Loathsome).

Mistigri · 26/05/2019 20:13

Anyway. Exit polls are encouraging. Far right doing less well than expected pretty much everywhere. Greens doing well.

Cobblersandhogwash · 26/05/2019 20:14

@mistigri, where are you seeing this info?

ContinuityError · 26/05/2019 20:18

Exit poll data here:

election-results.eu/national-results-overview/

Mistigri · 26/05/2019 20:19

I was talking about Europe generally @Cobblersandhogwash - Greens have done phenomenally well in Germany and Ireland and are now the main left-wing opposition in France too.

Le Pen has lost share versus last time and the Frexit parties in France are below 2%.

Think high turnout in remain areas in U.K. is a good sign too, potential for the remain parties to beat the exit poll estimates (which won't necessarily take account of turnout).

PortiaCastis · 26/05/2019 20:21

Oh really well I hope exit polls are right, must admit to voting for Molly Scott Cato of the green party as at least she has a good record as an MEP already

1tisILeClerc · 26/05/2019 20:28

Mistigri
Do you see France as being in a 'good' position from what you can tell?
Le Pen did better than Macron by a small margin. I am thinking it would have been better for Macron to be a few percent ahead of Le Pen for better stability. My neighbours just say moo and most of the others are not that interested.

Moonface123 · 26/05/2019 20:30

We are an island for a reason and are perfectly capable of managing ourselves, just like we did long before we joined EU. Fear of change is governing factor. People are So frightened by change and cling on to the old ways. l am hopeful and optimistic re our future. Lose the fear, stop reading rubbish media make.up.as They go along , we have got this, other countries want to.leave EU, let's show them how it's done.

ContinuityError · 26/05/2019 20:33

Exit polls also being reported on Twitter - far right parties losing vote share in Denmark for instance.

Bearbehind · 26/05/2019 20:37

We are an island for a reason

PMSL at this one! 😂😂😂😂

Peregrina · 26/05/2019 20:40

Bearbehind - I laughed too. The melting of the ice after the last ice age caused us to become an island. Climate change and sea level rise could inundate low lying parts of Great Britain - wonder if that will be because we are fearful of change?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 26/05/2019 20:40

We are an island for a reason

Yeah...
