The Brexit Party are doing really well in the polls. I just hope they do as well in the election.
I think their slogan should be "Tell them again".
I would like to see a clean sweep of Brexiteers but I know that is not going to happen.
I have sent off my postal vote.

Auld, I am not worried about taxes funding public services, in fact I am not worried about axes at all.
I am concerned and angry that some of my taxes are wasted by being sent to the EU.

The United kingdom thinks it is greater than it actually is.....it may have been great along time ago..we are small fry now.....better to be part of the EU where we can all stick together.

Coppersulphate · 17/05/2019 08:55

LeClerc, my note about private companies was a response to Peregrina's post about how much Boris earns from the telegraph.

I do, of course realise that there are a lot of pen pushers in the UK.
I don't, however, see why my taxes should pay towards some in the EU.

And 0.7% of our GDP is 0.7% too much.

lonelyplanetmum · 17/05/2019 09:08

Oh for goodness sake- it's not like we don't receive a benefit from the 0.7% of GDP expenditure.

It gives us a national benefit of unrestricted access to trading bloc with a market on our doorstep worth $18.8 trillion of 500 million consumers.

lonelyplanetmum · 17/05/2019 09:09

Even the ERG and Faragists no longer mention the purported
' bus' justification.

BackInTime · 17/05/2019 09:13

OP how do you think life in the UK will be if we leave the EU under Farages idea of a no deal WTO Brexit?

Lonelycrab · 17/05/2019 09:20

Leaving the EU without damaging the UK should have been a 10 year project

^this x1000^^

I don't, however, see why my taxes should pay towards some in the EU.

Plenty of things I don’t like my tax spent on- winter fuel allowance and free tv licenses for millionaire pensioners, stupid high speed rail links that will bring minuscule benefits, a nuclear deterrent that if we ever need we’ll all be dead anyway😳 These dwarf the 0.7% you’re banging on about.

But if abolishing these risked plunging our country into economic turmoil it would be quite reasonable to think if it was worth it....

AuldAlliance · 17/05/2019 09:32

CopperSulphate
My wording is consistently lacking in clarity. I do apologise.

I'll reformulate.
If you deem that the question of how your taxes are spent is significant, it might be useful to compare successive UK gvmts' approaches and that of the EP. Worry is a whole other level (as are axes).

Suggesting that you are concerned that the EP is a waste of UK taxpayers' money and that therefore UK citizens should re-elect to the EP one of the most egregious wastrels and wasters of taxpayers' money is curious logic.

bellinisurge · 17/05/2019 09:38

I don't mock people who voted Leave. I know and indeed love some people who do. I disagree with them, that's it. However, I mock anyone who thinks No Deal is the way to do it. Why should I think positively of anyone who wishes to bestow that foolishness upon the country to save face.

bellinisurge · 17/05/2019 09:43

As I have said countless times on here. I am happy to be wrong because it means everything this is ok and I'm a bit embarrassed. That's a small price to pay and I would welcome it. But if No Dealers are wrong, we are fucked.

HoustonBess · 17/05/2019 09:45

Coppersulfate - I am concerned and angry that some of my taxes are wasted by being sent to the EU.

Eu membership costs an average of about £30 per UK citizen per year. You'll spend more than that in travel insurance to cover the withdrawal of EHIC.

There's no model that shows any financial or economic benefit from brexit. That's why leavers stopped making promises and now go on about the long term - it'll cause economic damage for decades.

jasjas1973 · 17/05/2019 09:50

And 0.7% of our GDP is 0.7% too much

Waste of time arguing with an idiot who cannot see that the UK gains far more than the 0.7% of GDP we pay in.

Peregrina · 17/05/2019 09:56

Coppersulphate. I am pretty sure I have never mentioned how much Johnson earns from The Telegraph. It's something I neither know nor care about.

PortiaCastis · 17/05/2019 10:02

I'm concerned that some of my taxes are paying farage's salary as an MEP as he hardly ever turns up to earn his dosh yet has the damn cheek to rabble rouse against the hand that's feeding him and his many dodgy dealings, why should my little business go under because of that duplicitous little twerp spouting hate while pocketing an EU salary paid for by thee and me. I cannot work out how electing MEPs who are anti EU to an EU Parliament makes an iota of sense anyway as they'll just pocket the salary and not bother to turn up
You couldn't make it up

1tisILeClerc · 17/05/2019 10:18

{I don't, however, see why my taxes should pay towards some in the EU.

And 0.7% of our GDP is 0.7% too much.}

There are so many things I object to paying for but accept that in the way the world works it is necessary.
If I had my way the UK would be thrown out of the EU with 'No deal' as specified by A50 and immediately stop all flights, ships and all cooperation with the UK just to 'spite' the leavers.
However 43 million in the UK did not vote to leave and many are friends and family so I cannot have my wish. I can only assume that Coppersulphate is just a 'wind up' merchant as no one can really be so obtuse, although it seems (s)he is not entirely alone.

Peregrina · 17/05/2019 10:27

It's amazing isn't it - people upset about the EU 'wasting' money, but quite happy to return a whole slate of MEPs who are freeloaders, if going by the last tranche of Farage's MEPs are anything to go by? Nuttall also had a dismal attendance record, I can't be bothered to check the rest.

1tisILeClerc · 17/05/2019 10:39

I am sure a lot of money does get wasted by the EU however I suspect most of it ends back in the hands of the people rather than the UK 'backhanders' to (particularly) Tory party donors.

lonelyplanetmum · 17/05/2019 10:50

It's amazing isn't it - people upset about the EU 'wasting' money,

Yet the same people rejoice at spending ... let's see:

  1. £4.2 billion on government departments Brexit preparations since 2016, comprising:
a) 700 million in 2017-2018 b) £1.5 billion in 2018-2019 c) £2 billion in 2019-2020
  1. The extra £50m after Chris Grayling axed the controversial contracts. The Department for Transport (DfT) termination clauses agreed these payments with the companies, which included a firm which had no ⛴.
  1. Also quite rejoicing about Faragit and his:
a) earnings pocketed from broadcasting of between €590,048 and €790,000. And those are only the declared amounts of earnings. b)His campaigning lifestyle is funded by mate Aaron to the extent of ...£1 million previously to UKIP. £450,000 on Nigel Farage to fund lavish lifestyle the year following the EU referendum in summer 2016. C) Mr Banks, through one of his companies, rented exclusive £4.4m Chelsea home for Mr Farage d)Gifts included furniture, council tax, water and electricity bills e) Banks provided a £30k car and £20k for a driver f)Banks also leased private office for £1,500 a month and paid Mr Farage’s personal assistant g)Hundreds of thousands of pounds were spent promoting “Brand Farage” in America h) A company owned by Mr Banks, called Rock Services Ltd, leased a £4.4m three-bedroom Chelsea home with a garage for Mr Farage at an estimated rent of £13,000 a month in summer 2016. I)Mr Banks also bought furniture and fittings for the house, including crockery, chairs and bathroom accessories and even even a shower curtain. j)Mr Farage was also provided with a Land Rover Discovery, valued at £32,300, for his use. K)Mr Banks paid £20,000 for a close protection driver L)sought to raise a further £130,000 from unnamed supporters to cover Mr Farage’s security detail. M)Plus all the fuss about his MEP salary and pension on top of that.

Yes so all that money above is all hunky dory - but 0.7% of GDP for membership of a lucrative trading bloc. That's not ok. Right.

You and your facts1 Grin
No, we really need to trash the UK economy to get rid of some Eastern Europeans who are often treated appallingly to do shit work that is 'beneath' some UK workers.
Oh dear, some might manage to send some back to their families, but what percentage amount might that be compared to the 'waste' in the UK, such as HS2 to nowhere, Trident etc?
Apparently part of the reason for the delay in finishing Crossrail is because so many Polish and other construction workers went back to their original countries.

Peregrina · 17/05/2019 11:15

No, we really need to trash the UK economy to get rid of some Eastern Europeans who are often treated appallingly to do shit work that is 'beneath' some UK workers.

But not to worry, we will import people from sub-Saharan Africa and the Far East, and be able to treat them even more appallingly to do the 'shit' work that UK workers won't (can't) do. I say can't because some of it requires young fit people, not doddery arthritic pensioners.

lonelyplanetmum · 17/05/2019 11:59

You and your facts1

I know facts don't work. But can't stop myself! I think it was Flowerpower who suggested a better approach but I can't remember what it was!

Coppersulphate · 17/05/2019 12:04

Houston, I may or may not buy travel insurance. That is a decision I choose to make.

I do not agree to my taxes being spent on the EU.

You should be flattered, I was wondering when you were going to clock on.

PortiaCastis · 17/05/2019 12:16

In which case don't vote farage and his motley crew into an EU Parliament because your taxes are paying for their salary

lonelyplanetmum · 17/05/2019 12:25

But you do agree to your taxes been spent on ferry companies with no boats.
