Westminstenders: 1001 Ways to wait for EUCO - Sprouts, Nits and Brexit

Not much more to say other than, all we can do is wait to hear our fate.

Which seems to lie in the hands of Macron.

I think these tweet sums a lot of it up from a couple of jaded soft leavers

Iain Martin @ iainmartin1
This terrible farce in Brussels tonight is like being British during the eurovision song contest. British entrant awaits fate, watching humiliating results come in, trying to smile for the audience back home.

George Trefgarne @georgetrefgarne
To be honest I think Buck’s Fizz and Cheryl thingummy would have made a better job of it

My advice: Don't wait up!

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
EU source on Macron: "He is in a bit of a schizophrenic situation - (his) domestic audience demands that he is tough on Britain for historic reasons. On the other hand, France is among the most-hit in any no-deal Brexit. It will take hours before we pull him down from his tree."

So Macron may end up being the one who gets the UK what it wants but is doing it to be tough on us. I'm not sure I understand EU politics.

I love Our Mutual Friend, but it could do with a few cuts. Like a previous poster, though, I find Hardy significantly more verbose than Dickens.

tobee · 11/04/2019 19:26

No one asked me but Nicholas Nickleby is my favourite.

Hardy can do one though.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/04/2019 19:26

We have all sorts of treats in our stash. But I also have a fridge full of reduced cheese from Booths which absolutely needs eating! 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

I shall allow the stash to be eaten shortly after the cheese has left the building.

Iambuffy · 11/04/2019 19:27

Loathe Shakespeare.

Tbh the stabbings and killings can't come soon enough for me....they are all so....wordy....even when dying Ffs

boatyardblues · 11/04/2019 19:30

I feel this way about Tolkein. There is really only so much description of the inside of a cave I need.

I was impressed with the first Peter Jackson LOTR film because he got rid of all the boring bits (esp Tom Bombadil), but then he ruined things by turning The Hobbit into a 3 instalment sausage/snoozefest.

I agree about Hardy, Lawrence and Dickens being overdone and quite boring. I also don’t know why Lawrence garners so much praise for his women - just because they are less poorly drawn than many other feted male novelists’ female characters doesn’t mean they’re actually good. They’re just less crap.

By the way, I like how the mounting ennui with Brexit on these threads is leading to interesting cross-talk.

NoCryingInEngineering · 11/04/2019 19:30

I assume standing down the no deal prep means things like where I work no longer having to report stocks of Ingredient X on a daily basis to someone somewhere. Thereby freeing up more time for everyone to get on with there day jobs

boatyardblues · 11/04/2019 19:32

Is it safe to book a summer holiday to the EU yet, or should we wait until June?

MissLucyHoneychurch · 11/04/2019 19:32

These threads are becoming increasingly impossible to follow because of all the waffle. Don't care if you like Shakespeare, tinned sprouts or your kid has got nits - just wish you'd stick to Brexit talk.

MyLadyDeadlock · 11/04/2019 19:32

Bleak House is my fav Wink
Brexit is the modern day Jarndyce versus Jarndyce.

tobee · 11/04/2019 19:33

Yeah obviously not a literary type MissLucyHoneychurchGrinGrinGrin

OublietteBravo · 11/04/2019 19:37

Lots of civil servants were seconded into different departments in the short-term for no deal planning. I presume they’re returning to their normal jobs - at least for now. I imagine we don’t need them on “no deal in the next fortnight” footing right now. If the politicians are getting a break, it makes sense for the civil servants to have one too.

No autocorrect. I don’t mean civil serpents. Thanks for that suggestion.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 11/04/2019 19:37

Grin tobee

Sorry lucy, I guess you don't like it when we simply drift, eh?

Runningintothesunset · 11/04/2019 19:37

Just popping in to say I’ve just had a whole afternoon in which I didn’t contemplate Brexit once Grin Seriously though, if you can afford it, try and go to see Matthew Bourne’s swan lake while it’s on tour. Quite simply the most incredible piece of ballet / theatre I’ve ever witnessed

prettybird · 11/04/2019 19:39

On the other hand misslucy - I was just coming on to post how I love the way that we can side track onto other topics on these threads and still come back to the important points of Brexit when there are any and/or we come across something relevant or interesting. Smile

The Westministender threads have become a wee community - and life does go on outside of Brexit Grin - and there is usually a tangential link to something Brexit related (Farage Assange -> Vidal -> to other authors, worthy/wordy or not Wink). It is a wee bit of light relief at least - and broadens our horizons at the same time! Wink

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 11/04/2019 19:44

To be fair to misslucy

I was telling a friend how insightful and clever and informative the westministers threads are

And then i said 'I'll get it up on the computer so you can see'

And it was right in the middle of the menopause chat Grin so i had to pretend my computer was on the fritz

dreichuplands · 11/04/2019 19:46

Sorry misslucy

TatianaLarina · 11/04/2019 19:46

Tolkien is one classic English writer I actually loathe. Bloody hobbits and trolls and rings and orcs - tedious.

borntobequiet · 11/04/2019 19:48

On the fritz = in need of HRT.
Or anachronistic WW1 slang.

tobee · 11/04/2019 19:49

You see; Tolkien? Now I just think Mark Francois.

taeglas · 11/04/2019 19:54

@the3million

EU/EEA citizens in the UK can vote at the European Parliament elections in May.
Step 1: Register to vote by 7 May.

Step 2: Download and fill in the European Parliament voter registration form.

Step 3: Send the form to your local Electoral Registration Office by 7 May.
If you fail to follow step 2 & 3, even if you are on the Electoral register, you will be turned away on election day.
www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/may/24/eu-citizens-prevented-voting-confusion-registration-forms

Even if registered for last EU parliament elections in 2014 EU/EEA citizens in the UK have to complete step 2 and 3 again for 2019 EU parliament elections.

CecilVyse · 11/04/2019 19:57

@MissLucyHoneychurch There now Lucy! I was just agreeing with Mother the other day that you really were becoming one of us Wink

borntobequiet · 11/04/2019 20:02

Agree with the Jarndyce vs Jarndyce comparison
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarndyce_and_Jarndyce
Bleak House is Dickens’ masterpiece. He identifies and delineates the English (British) tendency towards fatal litiginous prevarication, its refusal to acknowledge reality and its effects on individuals and society, driven by a motley collection of inadequates and n’er do wells. So just like Brexit.
I did go for (mildly celebratory) drinks with neighbours.

I've had an invitation to stand as a Tigger too. Unfortunately, round here, they'd have me hanging off a lamp post pdq. Our parish elections are causing an enormous furore, at least it's taken the village (idiots) minds on the FB page off the horrors of poor people in the Channel in inadequate dinghies and 'Brexit means Brexit'.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 11/04/2019 20:09

I love great expectations. I know some dismiss it as Victorian melodrama but.....It's my favourite

Also love David Copperfield, a christmas Carol and hard times.

Ooh Buffy snap! Smile You’ve named all my favourites. I will not allow Great Expectations to be dismissed - one of the greatest stories ever written.
