Brexit

Which Remain voices do you think have the most impact?

I sometimes listen to James OBrien who, whilst I do agree with him on Brexit, strikes me as someone who is more likely to entrench a Leaver in their views. The way that he speaks over and laughs at Leave callers is quite uncomfortable listening at times and I think feeds the view that Remainers are patronising, arrogant and think all Leavers are stupid.

I have to say that I like Alastair Campbell on the subject (yes, I know!).

David Lammy has also been fantastic

Who else do you think helps, or damages the attempt to shift the public opinion towards Remain?

Anna Soubry, Gary Lineker, Nicola Sturgeon, alistair Campbell, Alyn Smith, Femi, Ken Clarke, Ralph Little, Lammy, Heseltine all well spoken and passionate remainders but agree they could have been more out there in getting their points across.

I think the creativity of Led by Donkeys has been inspiring and hopefully this gets the message across. Also the utter chaos that has ensued and Tom newton Dunn now coming out and saying how complex leaving EU iwill hopefully make leavers think.

The airtime and newspaper headlines and columns seemed to favour Brexit and seemed to give brexiters most opportunities to get their message across which I feel also put remain at a disadvantage.

how could i have forgotten stewart lee? most of his tour was about brexit. hes great.
i liked his line about brexit being like not much liking your hotel so shitting on your pillow in protest.

Peter Oborne, a right wing brexiter who writes for the Mail and the Telegraph has changed his mind about Brexit.

"It’s nearly three years since I, along with 17. 4 million other Britons, voted for Brexit. Today I have to admit that the Brexit project has gone sour.

Brexit has paralysed the system. It has turned Britain into a laughing stock. And it is certain to make us poorer and to lead to lower incomes and lost jobs.

We Brexiteers would be wise to acknowledge all this. It’s past time we did. We need to acknowledge, too, that that we will never be forgiven if and when Brexit goes wrong. Future generations will look back at what we did and damn us.

So I argue, as a Brexiteer, that we need to take a long deep breath. We need to swallow our pride, and think again. Maybe it means rethinking the Brexit decision altogether."

If he can change his mind let's hope others can too

I see that my tweaked Tommy Robinson idea has gone down like a lead balloon! Grin

Changing tack, I’ve noted with interest that in recent months women are more pro-Remain than men. So someone who would appeal to the menfolk is required.

With this in mind, I give you Gareth Southgate.

He’s hugely patriotic but his comments, including his remark about the ‘racial undertones’ of the Brexit debate, suggest he’s a Remainer. If he could be persuaded to speak out more and present a positive picture of the EU, possibly talking about the footballing/working opportunities of the Erasmus programme, it might help. (Especially on the back of a big England win.)

How could I forget the wonderful Patrick Kielty .

For those wondering about the funny ditty - it think it's this one.

It's really fucking irritating, however I can see how leavers may feel this way if the likes of James OB don't wind in the condescension.

Danny Dyer as a "hard man" covert to Remain from Leave might be quite effective.

Cobblersandhogwash · 10/04/2019 00:31

James O'Brien is always reiterating that he doesn't scorn the conned. Only the conmen.

I'm not sure what you mean about his patronising.

I think that word has been hi jacked by those who know nothing, refuse to learn anything yet complain when they are schooled and burned over and over by those who bother themselves to learn.

Bit like most of my peers at school in the 1980s. They feel their time has come and they'll be damned if they'll let it go in the fact of facts and reason.

Cobblersandhogwash · 10/04/2019 00:31

In the face of facts and reason.

holly873 · 10/04/2019 00:38

I think it's the twitter accounts of high profile celebrities who have been chipping away more than any single one politician as such. The likes of Tony Robinson, Gary Lineker etc.

lucyinthefry · 10/04/2019 08:11

I don't think Leavers will change their minds based on celebrity voices. I think we will go quiet for a while. We have to accept that most MPs are Remainers so Leave cannot happen until we have a GE and get a more Leave-leaning parliament.

Gone2far · 10/04/2019 08:23

One of the mistakes that the Remain campaign made was to bring in celebrities. Remember Geldolf on the Thames swapping insults with Farage? Or Eddie Izzard on QT? Who gives a damn about what's going on in their brains?

SouthWestmom · 10/04/2019 08:28

Haha J'Ob with his self satisfied catch phrase
'Nothing but contempt for the conmen and compassion for the conned' - patronising right there

And his 'alright mate, have a nice day' as he cuts off a caller.

And his 'where am I going wrong? Well it's very kind of you to say' etc etc

He's such a knob. Does nothing but reinforce the idea that remainders think they are so much cleverer than leavers.

Mistigri · 10/04/2019 08:56

I'm coming to the conclusion that it's leave voices that will have the most impact. Some of them are sounding so completely batshit this week ("THE QUEEN IS A TRAITOR" lol) that it will put off all but the obsessive brexiters.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 10/04/2019 09:47

Nick Ferrari on LBC is a good role model for how to capitulate grumpily to remaining without losing face. 'Just bloody stay and we'll move on to other things.'

Cobblersandhogwash · 10/04/2019 11:09

Reluctant Leaver Nick Ferrari?

The80sweregreat · 10/04/2019 17:00

Nick Ferrari was a big voice for leaving not that long ago - strange he has changed his tune!
He had Jacob Rees - mogg on his show the other morning agreeing with him, so this is fairly new for him to be all against the idea now?
lets hope he speaks out on his show and tells us why!
He may change a few minds.

Noname99 · 10/04/2019 17:17

None because most of of the comments and opinions being spouted at the moment are against leaving not for anything so can be written off by leavers as an extension of ‘project fear’ and so, of course, leave voters aren’t listening. Why should they? The only thing remainers have to say is how awful ‘leave’ is. There is very little positive advocacy for the EU because there can’t be .... it’s an appalling, corrupt organisation where the members of the club spend there time trying to fuck over their neighbours to get the best for themselves and whoever is lining their pockets at that particular moment while pretending to ‘work together.’ Most don’t believe the ‘workers rights’ bollocks - we have lead the way in comparison to most European counties - we passed a law only a few weeks ago giving further maternity and shared leave rights. And most don’t understand what’s so important about a trade union as all everyone says is how awful it would be without it, not what it brings us.
99% of the remain ‘voice’ is “it’s too difficult” ; “the alternative is much worse” and ‘we can’t leave because if we do, the terms will be so awful, we will be destroyed’ arguments. These are hardly compelling reasons ‘for’ anything - they could all be applied to the mafia! (Which is quite apt really - the ‘family’ you can’t leave!)

Windowsareforcheaters · 10/04/2019 18:16

The EU supports the GFA.

If the TUC and Michael Heseltine both believe workers rights are safer in the EU that's worth listening to and not dismissing it as "bollocks".

Heseltine a Tory who served in Thatcher's cabinet is scared by the Brexiteers. That's enough to make my blood run cold.
