Brexit

Which Remain voices do you think have the most impact?

I sometimes listen to James OBrien who, whilst I do agree with him on Brexit, strikes me as someone who is more likely to entrench a Leaver in their views. The way that he speaks over and laughs at Leave callers is quite uncomfortable listening at times and I think feeds the view that Remainers are patronising, arrogant and think all Leavers are stupid.

I have to say that I like Alastair Campbell on the subject (yes, I know!).

David Lammy has also been fantastic

Who else do you think helps, or damages the attempt to shift the public opinion towards Remain?

Actually there are also a couple of TV journalists who have done a good job, Faisal Islam and Krishnan Guru-murthy

I've found Faisal Islam massively scare-mongering - from the beginning. I started off following him on Twitter, and unfollowed him again for the sake of my mental health.

Yaralie · 06/04/2019 14:49

Jo Swinson comes over well. She speaks from the heart.

Cobblersandhogwash · 06/04/2019 14:56

Danny Dyer doesn't make sense.

Faisal Islam scaremongering? Some examples would be useful.

Someone like Clarkson would be great speaking out. I'm not sure that he would jeopardise his career though, he must know he's very Farage-like in terms of his demographic.

I think the Led By Donkeys campaign could be useful. I think people would rather be persuaded that they were conned and lied to, than that they were "stoopid", which Remain really should stop repeating.

Most of the Leavers I know are not political and aren't interested. They're the ones who just want it all to go away. It's important that they're persuaded that a second vote to revoke is the way to achieve it. Not the "oh just No Deal, get on with it" line

Clarkson wrote a piece in 'the sun 'about remaining (before the referendum. )

Violetparis · 06/04/2019 17:29

I think the Led By Donkeys campaign is by far the best and the only one that might actually change Leavers minds.

RedToothBrush · 06/04/2019 18:25

None because most leavers aren't paying attention to the names listed above. Views are too entrenched.

This. Mostly.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 06/04/2019 18:49

None, really, some are fine, but I find most of Remain - before and since the referendum - really weak. It feels more echo chamber than any difference being made.

I think fair play to Margaret Beckett sticking her neck out recently since her constituency still has very vocal UKIP members (and having the last very unpopular Labour leader in Derby beat by UKIP at the last election made that a lot worse, I worry what will happen if more Labour get ousted this time), but I wouldn't say it's been impactful.

The80sweregreat · 06/04/2019 19:45

The leavers had their bus and some big figures that were more 'swashbuckling' a kind of 'devil may care' attitude that seemed to rally the troops.
Remainers need to be a bit more like this, the ones that get up to speak about this subject seem very long faced and a bit down in the dumps ( well,Yvette cooper does) they need a few more like Jess Phillips or people that are a bit more jolly about the EU, more inspired about its role and how it works, something else apart from saying the same things over and over. When Jeremy Corbyn speaks his face doesn't shout out ' yes, lets stay together' more like ' i am told to say this, so i will' attitude.
A big personality to lead it all that really does care ( if there is another vote)

WSPU · 06/04/2019 19:47

Caroline Lucas and Gary Lineker.

TalkinPaece · 06/04/2019 19:57

Clarkson is (and always has been) openly and eloquently remain
but he's an old white rich bloke

from what I can gather LBD are having an effect as they do not say anything or express an opinion
they just highlight the words and opinions of others
Farage's face when they trolled his march showed that they got under his skin
Raab blocking them on all SM show they have got under his

tbh all LBD need to do is to make the 30% who did not vote
doubt the leavers
and the job is done long term

bellinisurge · 06/04/2019 20:21

People seem to listen to rich white blokes so I wish Clarkson in an unClarksonian way, would speak up more.

The80sweregreat · 06/04/2019 20:25

Maybe someone could offer Clarkson loads of money to front the remain cause?
Must be done rich kids out there to crowd fund it?

MeganBacon · 06/04/2019 22:15

Heseltine, Major, William Hague, Kenneth Clarke but none wanted to take a lead role and Remain was certainly poorly marketed and lacked impact.
I think all the LBC ones are awful - James O'Brien especially does way more harm than good.

Trekkingbeyond · 06/04/2019 22:24

Alistair Campbell
Caroline Lucas
Dominic Grieve
Tony Blair (I know I know)
Gina Millar
Sarah Woolaston
Anna Soubry (bats but I love her)
Ledbydonkeys are superb
Michael Hesaltine (spoke so movingly at the march)

TalkinPaece · 06/04/2019 22:27

Leave won because the focussed their adverts outside London ....
all the people you are listing are rich and London
so will not persuade the undecided

The80sweregreat · 06/04/2019 22:29

As much as I like James o Brian his condescending tone about leavers will alienate the cause. He needs to tone it down a bit. Stick to the facts. Let people talk!

The80sweregreat · 06/04/2019 22:33

I also agree that if Boris came out and said ' got it wrong , vote remain' then that would swing it a lot!
It Won't happen , but it's something big like that that would change things around.
The headlines are now ' Theresa to go' ( heard that before )

Trekkingbeyond · 06/04/2019 22:48

Talkingpaece spot on I have to say

twofingerstoEverything · 07/04/2019 08:28

Caroline Lucas and Femi.
However, as others have said, I think nothing will convince the hardcore leavers. Brexit is a religion to them. You may as well tell a Christian that Mary did not have a virgin birth. They won't believe you.
Spending time on pro-Leave social media is an eye-opener. They have their own alternative facts and dismiss any dissent as fear-mongering.

Eateneasterchocsalready · 07/04/2019 15:17

None of them. Not one seems too understand why anyone voted leave.

Not one leaver has actually understood or come up with working plans.

Eateneasterchocsalready · 07/04/2019 15:19

The EU is a religion and a cult. People actually think the UK can't survive without EU, how many years have we managed too stand on our own two feet? And how many year's have we Been in a trading block with EU!

Eateneasterchocsalready · 07/04/2019 15:21

Talkin peace.

Leave won outside London because that's where peoples lives felt most negativity from the EU. .. it really wasn't anything too do with ads being positioned!!

lljkk · 07/04/2019 15:26

I half understand why people voted leave...
... for sovereignty
... to give the establishment a kicking
... because the EU has flaws
... because 'we were fine before we joined the EU'
... bendy bananas
... predictions of economic damage are 'Project Fear'
... £350mln on side of a bus

the part I don't understand is Y people who liked above were immune to other lines of reasoning, like

*Pooling sovereignty is a great way to increase global influence
*Who the fuck is "The establishment" if not city trader gadflies (Farage), big company owners (A-Banks) & Eton-educated types (Bojo)?
*The EU could be reformed from within
*All our old trade deals are defunct & the whole trading world has changed a lot since 1975
*Bendy bananas are in my local shop, they obviously aren't illegal
*Economic damage can be measured in terms of growth not achieved
*£350mln on side of a bus was a bizarre distortion of facts

twofingerstoEverything · 07/04/2019 15:30

Not one leaver has actually understood or come up with working plans.

Well, this is the issue, isn't it? Leavers have had almost three years to come up with a plan and haven't been able to. If they hadn't made such wild promises in their campaigning, they might be further forward. If TM hadn't thrown down a load of unrealistic red lines, they might be further forward. This is what happens when you promise the undeliverable.
