Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

A Government and Parliament which is so pig-headed to still not be able to agree which direction they want to go forward in, in the week following that when we should have left, isn't likely to come back to the table. Much, much more likely to go running first to the Americans, and failing that, the Chinese. (The latter are 'furrin' too, but this will be overlooked.)

where many patients spent time doing tasks in the open air, which was generally held to aid recovery - a practice being used therapeutically more recently
Sounds like great practice; kudos to your DF. Smile

prettybird · 02/04/2019 09:25

Barnier is always much more expansive and interesting when he speaks in French.

dontcallmelen · 02/04/2019 09:26

PMK, thanks as always.

The No Deal Northern Irish Potato Glut
Or The No Deal Irish Potato 'Famine'?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-northern-ireland-47781052?__twitter_impression=true
Brexit: NI potato firms 'unable to export to EU' in no-deal

The European Union has said that after Brexit, UK potatoes will not be eligible to be marketed because of plant health regulations.

And it has refused to consider a UK application for its certification process to be granted equivalence, which would have allowed existing trade to continue.

The EU said it would not consider the application until the withdrawal negotiations had been concluded.

A regulatory issue.

Though I fail to see how this will be stopped. Surely forms will just carry on at the risk of fines / prosecution?

And the only way it could be stopped would be with border posts. Or blockades.

A technological solution isn't going to work on this.

The Independent is so invested in a PV I think they are trying to make sure there's no compromise on anything else. To be fair to them they have pushed hard for a PV from very early on and invested a lot into trying to get there. I certainly don't agree with it though. I'd prefer CM 2 to a PV but would have votes yes on everything yesterday (my useless Tory MP voted no to everything. He has also stopped writing me back and has blocked me on Facebook messenger 😂).

In terms of no deal can I just quickly ask...what do people think about the drinking water situation? I've stockpiled a little but not much. I know it was one of the reasons Gove backed away from a no deal in terms of needing to purify with chemicals from the EU?

Peregrina · 02/04/2019 09:29

My immediate thoughts on the potatoes - smuggled over the border and sold as Irish, So very very obvious.

prettybird · 02/04/2019 09:29

Go Barnier - get stuck into Farage Smile

Quoting Farage (in English for Farage's quote Wink) about his vision for the EU ( for the EU to be no more ) and that they must (and will) guard against that.

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 09:30

My flat is tiny. I genuinely have no room to stockpile drinking water.

This whole thing is utter lunacy.

Jacques Barnier speaking live to the EU about brexit

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 09:36

*sorry Michel Barnier

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 09:37

They are definitely preparing for the UK to leave

phpolly · 02/04/2019 09:37

So a party's promise not to whip a vote is clearly meaningless, on both sides. Really no such thing as a "free" indicative vote, then?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 09:42

Michel Barnier has said Brexit is a Lose-Lose situation.

But it is his duty to implement it as best he can.

“There are lessons to be learned from Brexit; to listen to citizens concerns about security”

woman19 · 02/04/2019 09:46

MPs are not well or physically safe enough to think clearly right now.

@redhistorian
A lot of MPs looked exhausted & emotionally wrung out tonight. They're making hellishly difficult choices under a hail of emotional & physical abuse, while the doomsday clock ticks down to midnight. No one thinks clearly in these conditions. For all our sakes, we need a time out.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 09:46

Baroness Armstrong from the House of Lords is now speaking to the EU, about a House of Lords document; post Brexit.
3 main areas of future relationships:

  1. Structure for future dialogue ( with Europe), engages with citizens who are concerned about their future.
  2. Defence, security etc.
3.Isuues with Nationalism, identity crisis, being exploited by extremes on right and left.
1tisILeClerc · 02/04/2019 09:47

Special communique from Larry.
He has taken command at No10 and established a hotline to Brussels. On behalf of fellow cats he has said they prefer variety and quite like the German catfood, they have decided therefore that the UK should remain.
Rumours of a 'French fancy' are only rumours as cats are not really into 'cake'.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 09:48

Alan Smith, from Scotland.
Is embarrassed about the UK Parliament.
He thinks No deal is more likely.
Can citizens rights provisions be treated as a seperate Treaty?q
Something about financial considerations

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 09:50

The general consensus from Europe is that they have been extremely patient with Britain

wheresmymojo · 02/04/2019 09:50

@NoWordForFluffy

How will moving to Scotland help?
What am I missing?

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 02/04/2019 09:50

I think this may be the help we all need right now

This blog from @StephenGethins explains why SNP MPs voted as we did last night. We prioritised options that would stop Brexit and remove the risk of a no deal exit. But we also showed a willingness to compromise by voting for a single market/customs unions option.

Tonight, SNP MPs will be standing up for Scotland's place in Europe. Our immediate priority is to back proposals to stop Brexit, in line with the views of people in Scotland.

Removing May from the Cockpit won't work.

Absolutely agree with this, all the potential contenders are worse.

OMGithurts · 02/04/2019 09:53

This is so sad. There is no other clear path except No Deal, which will be utterly ruinous. What will be the first signs of it going tits up? Food shortages, medicine, petrol? Will interst rates sky rocket, will I be able to pay my bloody mortgage?
