Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2019 10:39

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

Ah thread moved on while I was doing jobs..

bumsquash (love the name!) Yes tutting! And the inevitable would be brexiters would end up tutting at the tutting and thus create a nationwide tut-a-thon 😂

chev thank you. I was thinking about you and singingbab all day too and trying not to cry I did my best Uri Geller every coffee was energy for the marchers* and every fag was fire in their bellies^ Grin i know im strange
Very glad singing was doing her best to convince you to stand! (And I think we might share the same local news so I will try to look out for you.)

Would also be good if other mnetter's ( born ?) stood to.

I'm envisaging some rather bizarre MN spin off political party but stranger things have actually happened so why not? Every candidate must know the answers to What is a penis beaker? what's a woman? is the dover port important?

LonelyTiredandLow · 24/03/2019 10:46

JustanotherPoster I was completely Shock when we heard the chant "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" yesterday and a fellow marcher was similarly confused - we both said we didn't understand giving him kudos. Turns out (from seeing video footage on the march this morning) they were singing "Where's Jeremy Corbyn?" which makes much more sense! Grin

Barclay speaking up for PM too. Change in leadership just a “massive distraction” right now #Marr

Looks a lot like May is gonna survive again and the coup is probably off. At least in terms of public appearances. In practical terms, maybe not so.

Penny has dropped that it might not be viable to force the issue outside Cabinet without causing even more issues.

Here's the full cast-list for the PM's meeting at Chequers, which is taking place at 3pm:

Boris Johnson
Dominic Raab
Jacob Rees-Mogg
David Davis
Iain Duncan Smith
Damian Green

Expect PM to be pushed on timetable for her departure and need to embrace no-deal

IDS criticises plan for Commons to take control tomorrow as “a recipe for utter chaos”...

Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay says that yes there is a “crisis” and that is the fact that the Commons is trying to take over Government tomorrow

Remember, Brexit was all about Parliamentary Sovereignty.

OP posts:
HazardGhost · 24/03/2019 10:53

I'm digesting the news and I don't understand why replacing May would solve much of anything?

I know May has been bonkers but can anyone lead while parliament is heading in multiple directions, no deal, soft brexit, PV, revoke? Surely if anyone were to take over it would have to be someone who is respected by many MPs including labour and SNP? Failing that magical indivdual actually existing and stepping forward then shouldn't the house forget worrying about whose suppose to be leading and take control in the form of various votes?

HazardGhost · 24/03/2019 10:55

X post! Looks as if they are squashing ousting may after all.

God. Please make this stop.

Just split.

Government of national unity amendment in No Confidence motion.

Someone. Please.

I fear total anachary is far closer than most people realise.

I refer to the following from yesterday's Times.

“Viktor Orban, the autocratic & proudly illiberal Hungarian prime minister, said that no deal was a real possibility because he had learnt from the experience of Margaret Thatcher that all Tory leaders only cared about one thing: the Conservative Party”

I think we have passed through the point of any sort of logic or planning being involved and therefore there is no understanding to be done.

@doireallyneedto there is a fabulous film about the yugoslav conflict where a whole town is led to believe that the war is still on, so being used by the mayor to create his fortune, they are kept living underground for 30 years... So it isn't a bad idea!

It is 5hrs long though 😁

RedToothBrush · 24/03/2019 11:04

Indeed.

Which means events are spiralling out of control.

And there is only one outcome from that situation.

RedToothBrush · 24/03/2019 11:05

MPs can only be reactionary at this point. Not proactively controlling the situation I suspect.

Yes, I feel like brexit has become this raging torrent of a river and all you can hope for this is maybe try and build some defences that might direct the water a little before it destroys you.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 24/03/2019 11:12

"Where's Jeremy Corbyn?" which makes much more sense!

Yeah dumbest move so far for him, theres quite a few to choose from I admit but yesterday was indefensible so I wont even try because doing so would be totally disingenuous Grin

Holidayshopping · 24/03/2019 11:14

yesterday was indefensible

What did he do yesterday?
