A thread for those of us on the march today :)

Weather still looking good, (perhaps, possibly, even some sunshine?) temps around 12-14, a little gusty at times, cooling off in the evening, so bring an extra jumper if you haven't set off.

Travel safely and see you at the march!

Sevens7 net (after you take away our rebate and all the money we get back from the EU for our deprived areas) membership of the EU is just under £9bn which is about what we spend on waste management per year. Both the government and the CBI estimate the net economic benefit to our country of being part of teh EU is about £60-£90bn a year...

PortiaCastis · 24/03/2019 20:17

I thought this thread was about the march !
Anyway I'm still buzzing after a great day so thanks to the organisers and to OYBK for all the information she collated.

Icantreachthepretzels · 24/03/2019 20:25

It was such a great day. It was the first time in a long time that I haven't felt like giving up on this country altogether. It reminded me that - no matter what crazy, stupid, harmful thing they do with brexit - the majority of the British people are good, decent people who will keep on fighting (peacefully) to be heard.
And it was wonderful to know that across the EU they would see our strength of feeling and they would take notice, even if our own government wouldn't. We proved that we are good people with a bad government - not a bunch of insular, xenophobic, obsessed with the war, imperial wannabes with the government we deserve.

Unescorted · 24/03/2019 20:27

bank de regulation took place in 1985.... a little before Blairm despite his many faults.

Port1ajazz · 24/03/2019 20:35

Midgebabe , we did not join the EU we were duped into it by first PM Heath signing the Maastricht treaty with out the public even knowing about it ! Then PM Brown signed the Lisbon treaty in secret even from some of his own party ! These treaties took us into the EU with deals that started costing Britain money to support inefficient French farmers and help boost the EU income the brunt of which was being met by Germany !

TalkinPaece · 24/03/2019 20:36

Port1ajazz
If you think Heath signed Maastricht you need to read a LOT more

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/03/2019 20:39

It costs £35m a week to be a member of the EU, would remainers agree to pay extra taxes to pay for it? if yes 'd vote remain tomorrow.

We are getting a lot more out of the EU than this. We benefit because of the trade and customs agreements. We pay in to be part of the club but the more we use it the more we save, and we use it a lot.

If we had to pay customs, and we will the we leave, then it will be a lot more than this and we, the customers, will feel it really badly.

It's not as simple as just saving the money the red bus told us about.

Mistigri · 24/03/2019 20:40

I think the main thing that impressed me was how good natured it was. We barely saw a policeman or security and there wasn't much for them to do anyway apart from stopping kids from climbing on the statues in parliament square.

Also quite encouraged by how non-party political it was for the most part - if we are to find a resolution it's going to have to be cross party and MPs and others are going to have to put aside narrow allegiances.

Peregrina · 24/03/2019 20:40

Heath didn't sign the Maastricht Treaty.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2019 20:41

You're welcome Portia :)

I'm getting quite frustrated that every single thread seems to get hijacked.

dd informs me that at her bit of the march there was a marching band. I had a mobile disco at my bit. What else did I miss?

Edward Heath - PM 1970 1974.
Maastricht - signed 7th Feb 1992

But hey - why get a little truth in the way of a good story?

TalkinPaece · 24/03/2019 20:46

BadBad
We dipped in and out of the march as my nephews are quite young
so we saw
the samba band
the morris dancers
the brass band
multiple sound systems
the yellow flat flag
the big TM model with the nose
it was excellent

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/03/2019 20:48

I missed the Morris Dancers.

You could hear the samba band for miles.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2019 20:49

Shock there were Morris dancers? and a Samba band? I saw a giant Labour sky banner thingy that I was tempted to lie in the middle of and get carried along Grin

Oh boy!
The Maastricht treaty was signed in 1992
and Heath was PM in 1970 so 22 years difference there

I saw the mobile disco and was dancing with a couple of strange men OYBBK Grin

PortiaCastis · 24/03/2019 20:52

John Major PM in 1992

Unescorted · 24/03/2019 20:53

OYBBK The old men peeling off at Green Park to use the loos -only to find them closed. So people creating human screens so they could use the trees. They are in real need of good medical supplies from Europe - without delay. They were marching for their lives.

TalkinPaece · 24/03/2019 20:53

Friends of mine were the tango dancers but I did not see them !
And some of the dog coats were fab
and the kid with
"I am 7 and my room is tidier than Brexit" Grin

IceRebel · 24/03/2019 20:54

But hey - why get a little truth in the way of a good story?

I'm so looking forward to seeing how Port1ajazz is able to prove their claims, you can prove he signed it, right... Hmm

Unescorted · 24/03/2019 21:04

They could FOI the document or google footage of the signing. I can't see why all the news channels and newspapers would all report in 1992 a news item as contemporaneous when they it had happened in 1974..... even for the fake news brigade that takes a lot of forethought and planning. How would you keep something like that secret for so long?

TheElementsSong · 24/03/2019 21:08

Yeah I'm sure Port1ajazz will be back with evidence of Heath signing the Maastricht treaty... any... minute... now Grin

But back to the thread - what an uplifting day it was. We were saying to the DCs that whatever happens with Brexit, they can feel proud that our family participated in this historic, gentle, peaceful and co-operative expression of our democratic right to protest and express our views. This too is democracy.
