Out of interest, if you voted leave what do you do for a living?

I promise I won’t ask you anymore questions or it turn into a slanging match, you are untitled to your opinion.
I don’t know anyone of my friends who voted leave, the odd acquaintance who voted leave “because they didn’t really understand” but the people I am friendly with all seem to be remianers. We are in our 30s and to teaching, sales and banking type jobs. Dh is a solicitor and all do law in one form.
I was wondering if certain sectors voted leave generally and if what you did for a living influenced your leave vote, and if you could possibly explain why the leave vote would benefit your sector. I am not here to judge at all just trying to understand

Apparently the concern was being shoved into conflicts by the EU as part of a multinational military force at the behest of whomever was president at that point.

Bookworm01 · 24/03/2019 17:41

London Underground station supervisor. My colleagues voted mostly remain, but those who voted leave come from many backgrounds.

Mum and Dad, brother and Sis in law live in the Shires and all voted Leave. All extended family in West Midlands voted Leave. They are retired, working in care homes, for the NHS or in office based jobs.

Dh a postman and voted Leave. He said most of his colleagues did too. His best friend is a quantity surveyor and he voted Leave.

@Shookethtothecore I suspect army types do t want an EU army and potential national service for our kids.

Littlebird88 · 24/03/2019 17:53

Me
Consultant in the NHS

Mistigri · 24/03/2019 18:41

Ive no idea what other people voted as i dont feel its important that i know

I suspect that many people avoid asking if they aren't sure of the answer. I certainly avoid raising the topic - even though so far all the people I thought might have voted leave turn out to be remainers. The only definite leavers I know (apart from the shipping manager who is suffering from Bregret) are long-time eurosceptics.

Piggywaspushed · 24/03/2019 18:45

I'd be interested if people could speciify the age group taught by the teachers. I read recently that primary teachers are more likely to vote Conservative than secondary teachers. They are also more likely to have voted leave than secondary counterparts. That said, there are still way more teachers mentioned on here than one would expect, given the vast majority of secondary teachers voted to remain.

House wife
Civil engineer
Railway worker
Business owner (car industry)
Beauty therapists
Shop worker
Hr administer
Farmer
Self employed ground worker
Local labour councillor
Land lord pub x2 houses x1
Successful artist

Basically every 1 I know bar 2, most of them in north east/SouthYorkshire. Not 1 of them racist

Shookethtothecore · 24/03/2019 18:50

I don’t assume all leavers are racist. But absolutly far right, racist people attached themselves to the leave rhetoric and became braver. I hated that. But of course I don’t think all leavers are racist far from it

I voted Leave. I'm currently a full-time Masters student. I was a primary teaching assistant before that. Other examples of leave voters I know:

Carpenter
Labourer
Electrician
Plumber
Barista
Cashier
Not working due to disability
SAHM
Retired

RomanyQueen1 · 24/03/2019 19:03

I didn't vote at all but those I know who admit to voting leave included

several sahm/housewife
retired couples inc pil
a couple of students
a nurse
manual labourers/ farm workers.

TatianaLarina · 24/03/2019 19:39

I know two people who voted leave - one a 60+ QC and the other a retired businessman - 75 with a house in S.France and family in Paris. He didn’t think that through.

And my hairdresser who wants Boris to be PM.

Kummerspeck · 24/03/2019 19:41

Among those I know that voted leave are:
GPs/medical consultants
Pharmacists
Nurses
Chemical Engineers
Project Manager
Chartered Accountant
Actuary
Psychologist
All are well educated and reasonably well paid. I think round here many who voted remain are now saying they would vote to leave if it was repeated

Interestingly the two pensioners whose votes I know both discussed it with their children and grandchildren then voted remain, one because he felt the EU maintained peace in Europe since the war and the other couldn't decide and went with better the devil you know

I think all of us have been appalled at the "Leavers are too thick, too stupid, too uneducated, too racist, etc to deserve a vote" attitudes displayed by some people The vote has brought out some really unpleasant intolerance in people who generally claim to be tolerant

Litttlepinkegg · 24/03/2019 19:44

2x company directors
1x regional manager type role
1x public sector worker - mid management level

BluishMoon · 24/03/2019 20:08

I work for the NHS, voted leave. When discussed at work it was probably about 50/50 split with a mix across all roles

SleepingSloth · 24/03/2019 20:16

And my hairdresser who wants Boris to be PM.

Why would anyone want Boris to be PM? Is she his hairdresser too? 😂

TatianaLarina · 24/03/2019 20:20

She thinks he tells it like it is.

I don't understand that at all. Why would people who thought remain was right at the time of the referendum, now be swayed to vote the other way with the absolute mess that we've seen since the vote. I can understand those that voted leave standing by their vote if they think in the end it's the better option but can't think why anyone would have changed from remain to leave based on what they've seen since the result.

PizzaCafe2016 · 24/03/2019 20:28

Easy. Since the 2016 referendum the EU has proven that all they want is UK money. Remember that UK is the third largest contributor to the EU. Had one of the weaker EU members who take from EU as opposed to contributing wanted to leave Brussels wood have been ecstatic and never have objected.

Todaythiscouldbe · 24/03/2019 20:32

Business owner
Insurance consultant
NHS manager

And lots of others, I'm one of those above

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 24/03/2019 20:32

I completely agree with you

TatianaLarina · 24/03/2019 20:37

What like Greece, Spain, Portugal who all received bailouts and great efforts to keep them in the EU?

Joans3rddaughter · 24/03/2019 21:03

Leavers includes
Retired Mechanical Engineer
Practicing Midwife
Police Officer
Quantity Surveyor
Don't believe everything you are told. I suspect some of those on the march in London this weekend were "shy" brexiteers as are some of those signing the "remain " petition!

PizzaCafe2016 · 24/03/2019 21:16

What like Greece, Spain, Portugal who all received bailouts and great efforts to keep them in the EU?

At whose expense? What did those countries who bailed out PIGS receive in return?

CoachBombay · 24/03/2019 22:07

Military, surrounded by swathes of them. 90% voted leave I'd say easily of the ones I know.

Others I know who voted leave, farmers, a NHS Dr, 2 solicitors and a civil engineer.
