Westminstenders: Flextension

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 22:37

Just wrote an intro and wiped it. So this is as quick as I can sum up.

EU response is extension to 22nd May if May passes her deal by 29th March

Or an unconditional extension to 12 April which could be extended with a plan and understanding to take part in EU elections.

This isn't what may wanted. It gives her less time and leverage

It opens up the possibility of her being ousted as PM in the next couple of days. Graham Brady asked her to quit on Monday. Remain Cabinet ministers are threatening to quit if May whips a vote to support no deal.

The talk is May has indeed flipped to supporting no deal with many think she's pretty much gone full on Colonel Kurtz.

The EU are in effect supporting parliamentary sovereignty and are being incredibly reasonable.

May now has to decide whether to accept.

The whole situation looks explosive and likely that one half of the cabinet or the other are on the brink of walking. And May's power is so shattered.

However she remains the gatekeeper and as it stands if she's hell bent on no deal, it will be extremely difficult for Parliament to prevent that.

Bonjour Tristesse indeed 😥

At last May manages to unite both the country and the Commons

Pmk. thanks, Red

What caused 'Brexit'?

Thatcher's war on our Miners and the utter depravity of so called Universal Credit.

Time to sort this out.

From a previous thread (yesterday?) wrt TM's demagoguery -
The other thing that struck me yesterday was TMs assertion that people wouldn't understand being asked to vote in EP elections three years after the ref. I thought it was very patronising. Anyone older than a toddler can understand what's going on.

That isn't patronising.

That is Theresa May playing on fears of Leavers that their prize may be snatched from them at the last minute, making an implicit threat to civil discourse (and maybe even law and order) by suggesting this would be an incredibly complex manouver/possibly involving trickery/certainly involving the Leave voter losing out.

She is playing on fears of Leavers that their prize may be snatched from them at the last minute.

tobee · 22/03/2019 02:19

Yup

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/03/2019 02:19

Pmk. Thanks Red. Thanks everybody.

mathanxiety · 22/03/2019 02:25

She is backtracking on the tenor of her speech last night, trying to blame parliament. She was just "expressing frustration"

She was just playing a very dangerous game, playing on fears, pitting the mob and herself against Parliament.

English kings have lost their heads in circumstances like this.

Peace -Marching, Kindfolk

Thank you Red.

Just woke up and checked the petition. It's completely static now at
2,281,326*. Hopefully it will continue moving in the morning.

Revoke petition link if not signed (TM~does~not~speak~for-me)

Hello. Delurking (well I posted once, eons ago). I would say you can duck in and out of these marches. But re boredom, there is soooooo much people watching and fun I never felt the need to for that reason. But I have done for food. Bring lots of food. It is tiring.

Mid-night waking, teething baby. So totally knackered as been like this all week, unlikely to march myself sadly.

Thanks for the threads.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 22/03/2019 03:51

Pmk
I am very new to this thread.
Just wanted to say how incredibly informative and in a way reassuring it is to have it to turn to with the most up to the minute reports and clarifications. Thank you all contributers

Plaice cat king

Treeza lacks self awareness.

While people look into Brexit, we are missing the signs of recession.
The question is not when but how big it would be.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 22/03/2019 04:02

I have some questions please.

What date is the next meaningful vote? ( if permitted?)
How can mps get rid of Theresa May by force? (I’ve heard Michael Gove is waiting in the wings to be pm)

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/03/2019 04:51

Morning!
Guardian leading with Kent Schools which makes me feel better for emailing the school. I thought the maintenance man was giving me stink eye for weeks because of it but now I'd like to think it was a kind of suspicious "how did you know about the secret plans?" side-eye. Either way I feel less of a loon for predicting Kent school chaos to my friends.

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/03/2019 04:53

Oh and for the trolls saying "why another vote?" it is about INFORMED CONSENT.

dimsum321 · 22/03/2019 05:22

I genuinely don't understand why the leavers are so against another vote. They will not be prevented from voting again. So it will be democratic, everyone who is eligible will be able to vote.

But the result will be far more valid than the first vote as we, hopefully, are now far more aware of the likely consequences of our choice.

How is another vote any different from government elections every 5 years?

dimsum321 · 22/03/2019 05:24

I think the petition is stuck at 2.2 mill. Site must have completely crashed. I've checked it at least 3 times this morning.

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/03/2019 05:35

I've just realised...
We need Paul MacKenna to CLAP!
Isn't that what he does to 'wake people up' once he has hypnotised them?

Wallywobbles · 22/03/2019 05:36

Petition been the same since I checked at 3am.

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 05:41

What is Erskine may? And what have Kent schools got to do with anything?

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/03/2019 05:58

@Stealth Erskine May is the guide to parliamentary practice (what Bercow relies on to umpire HoC).

I live in Kent and these threads have been saying for months about potential school closures and motorway problems.

Neome · 22/03/2019 05:59

Thanks to you wonderful lot I signed and emailed out the Revoke petition when it was around 200,000 astounding and a glimmer of hope that it's now x10!!

Could you advise on

  1. The march : I can't go so should I stick a tv I my front yard and instigate an impromptu street party/wake/March on the spot? Offer childcare to anyone at DS school who wants to go?

  2. Is it possible to petition parliament to no confidence the government?

  3. I wondered if it would be possible to petition the EU and it is and I saw this but haven't figured it out yet.

EU petition
