Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

Delurking.
Live in France. They are saying this shambles is 100% TMs fault.

So if I understand correctly, if TMs deal is not passed, (and how can it be because John Bercow said if it has not changed, then it cannot be voted on) there is a possibility that the EU will offer a long extension.

Hopefully long enough to get a new referendum put in place, Theresa May to be kicked out of Politics and hopefully revoke article 50.

That speech was like watching a psychopath. Theresa May is chilling.

Holidayshopping · 20/03/2019 21:08

She has to go.Tomorrow.

How?!

Littlespaces · 20/03/2019 21:09

@Peston
This was one senior Tory’s nutshell of ⁦*@theresa*_may⁩’s statement to the nation. Oddly I was reminded of Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles singing “I’m Tired”

I wonder who advises her? Why do the erg have such a hold over her?

GCAcademic · 20/03/2019 21:09

Surely MPs will not wear this? It's unprecedented for a Prime Minister to speak like this about Parliament. She's shown her authoritarian colours, and not by accident either.

WaterQuarter · 20/03/2019 21:09

She really gets off on patronising a television audience. In parliament she stutters and stammers and is not exactly deft of word or thought. But with a speech written for her and a camera pointing at her dreary fizzog she gets to be the patronising headmistress who uninterrupted, gets to put everyone in their place and then flounce off.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2019 21:09

I signed that petition but it can’t be the first time one on revoke has been set up - is it?

Holidayshopping · 20/03/2019 21:10

I’m so cross about this-how dare she try to spin her fuck up into being someone else’s fault!

Horehound · 20/03/2019 21:10

Theresa May has jumped the shark here. There’s no going back. She has to go. Tomorrow.

Well that's not going to be happening.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 21:11

Late PMK (again) one of the outcomes of her 'you all agree with me' speech is that petition gained 10 000 signatures in 15 minutes! I think that's a pretty resounding answer for her.

TatianaLarina · 20/03/2019 21:11

If this were a movie, Special Forces would be martialling ready for a dawn raid to save us. Or in Tolkien the trees would be coming to the rescue.

Who can help us now..?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/03/2019 21:11

Can someone link to the revoke petition please?

rosie39forever · 20/03/2019 21:12

De lurking
Totally reminded me of Richard Nixon's I'm not a crook speech🤬

Horehound · 20/03/2019 21:12

It's quite infuriating that we got one vote, it was a very close result and yet she ploughed on and on about it being the woll of the people. Fuck off, it was half the people and they didn't know what they were voting for!

And all the Mps get to vote and revote and revote again. It's hypocritical.

Peregrina · 20/03/2019 21:12

Thatcher was super patronising too of course.

But for quite a long time, Thatcher had a significant number of the public with her. May at best had only a few months with enough of the public behind her.

Still get out and demonstrate on Saturday. Today's speech might have given us more placard fodder.

Theo Usherwoodd@theousherwood*

Nothing new in Theresa May's speech.

It was an update designed for a section of the British public which has long since tuned out of the twists and turns of Brexit

< which is a sizeable chunk of the population >

TheElementsSong · 20/03/2019 21:15

Surely MPs will not wear this?

Many MPs have been running scared of The Will Of The People since 2016. TM has dogwhistled to The People that Parliament/the Elite/the Traitors/the Saboteurs/Foreign Influences have thwarted the sacred Brexit. And this is far from the first time that The People have been dogwhistled with this narrative; it's been shamelessly ongoing for a LONG time. Even a quick glance around at what MN Leavers have been posting since 2016 will show that it's been eagerly lapped up and internalised.

CordeliaEarhart · 20/03/2019 21:15

Anyone know when that petition was set up?

MyNameIsArthur · 20/03/2019 21:16

That speech was like watching a psychopath. Theresa May is chilling

My thoughts exactly. I have this fear that we have a potential dictator here

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2019 21:17

The ERG don't have a huge hold over her as she is still trying to wheel out the same deal she's had for months. They want no deal next week : she is waffling on about the end of June? They can't do a no confidence vote now. They can't sack her. They have been told to vote for the deal ; they said they won't.
We're no further forwards waiting for Europe to try and throw a lifeline of sorts?
Theresa thought her deal would walk it and it didn't.
If Bercow let's them vote again when he said they can't then he'll be another one doing u turns.

Tanith · 20/03/2019 21:17

They should have had one of those public notices at the end:

"For those affected by this speech , there is a March on Saturday to Trafalgar..."

SwedishEdith · 20/03/2019 21:17

One woman said no, I just want it to all go away! I'm afraid people are still fairly complacent..

I completely agree with this. I rarely see anyone checking news on their phones, hardly anyone at work actually talks about the details except in this way i.e. they want it to stop. Which is why revoke would not be big deal for the public. It would be for the Govt as there will be an enquiry into the complete waste of public money.
