How likely is it that we will crash out with no deal in nine days time?

Just that really. Do we think Theresa May will be able to secure a short extension from the EU and if she can’t, does that mean we’ll be crashing out with no deal in just nine days time?

BBC reporter at a local business forum yesterday (not sure where, caught teport halfway through) asked audience to simply raise their hands if their business was prepared for no deal. Not one of them (audience maybe 50/60).

Langrish · 22/03/2019 07:04

(Huge respect for Mark Carney: take his word over a government spokesperson’s every time. Simply an observation on the report)

We can’t just revoke though, right? We have to pass a brand new Act of Parliament to revoke Article 50 and the EU Exit Act (can’t remember its proper name, sorry). So how is that going to happen in a week? Is it even possible?

Wonnacott35 · 22/03/2019 07:29

I'm not a bot GrinI genuinely believe she is trying to fuck it up enough for a second vote. How she thought the WA was acceptable to anyone makes no sense to me. I voted remain, I want to stay in.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 22/03/2019 11:04

How she thought the WA was acceptable to anyone makes no sense to me

Because it's a compromise (and quite a hard Brexit compromise given her red lines, yet there are people who voted remain who would have accepted it, like me).

She appears to have gone nuts, but we are also in this mess because MPs won't put country before party/themselves. A compromise is needed and fast (before 12 April).

Parker231 · 22/03/2019 11:09

The EU have said they are no further agreements or negotiations so it’s either agree to the WA agreement or face the unknown. Why Labour are talking about different agreements I don’t understand when the UK have already been offered what they are getting from the EU.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2019 12:08

Not quite, Parker. It's all we're going to get with TM's red lines taken into account. If she dropped those there could be more negotiations.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 22/03/2019 12:10

Yes if someone like David Lidington took over and said "the whole of the UK will stay in the customs union while it exists", the EU would bite his hand off.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 22/03/2019 12:10

Well sort of. They wouldn't say no, anyway.

Parker231 · 22/03/2019 12:25

@NoWords - agreed - my comment was quite simplistic but I can’t see the red lines being removed at this stage.

TalkinPaece · 22/03/2019 12:59

Revoke A 50 is the one thing that TM could do without reference to anybody else

sign the petition
and join us in London
to remind her
she is not acting in our interests or according to our wishes

Quartz2208 · 22/03/2019 13:06

the problem has been with all of this though is that the referendum has always been black and white/stay or go/yes and no. There is no middle ground

And however much one side pushes that they won (which is correct) the margins between them were small - in effect splitting the country in 2. So half want one thing and half another. May tried to make a compromise between the two but neither side want

And here is the thing what good is a second vote going to do - you will either get the same result or a slight shift the other way what does that solve.

What we really need is a shake up on the british political system the Conservative and Labour parties are representative of a time that no longer exists and are no longer fit for purpose. At least 60/70% of the issues the EU are blamed for are the fault of our Parliamentary system and the parties and MPs that we have. That is what needs an overhaul

feesh · 22/03/2019 13:42

But what about the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018? We need another Bill to revoke that, surely?

TalkinPaece · 22/03/2019 13:44

feesh
According to multiple legal texts from the EU and the UK courts,
Article 50 can be revoked by the Prime Minister alone
and all of the legislation automatically shifts with that act

same as at the moment, crashing out is the default

HumblePi · 22/03/2019 13:50

Peston thinks we're going to no deal

Parker231 · 22/03/2019 19:30

Am reading now that there might not be a MV3. What’s next?

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2019 20:53

Indicative votes on a selection of outcomes.

Plus MPs' motion to take over the house on Weds to debate Brexit options and potentially force a Bill through.

Bluntness100 · 22/03/2019 21:38

No ten announced today they would respect rhe house and the votes it cast, as such, whichever way you cut it, on an even playing field ,,that's a long delay or revoke, likely long delay as the option with the biggest majority,

However i strongly suspect something is very wrong here, looking at thr seven options, they have been cleverly written, and it may be none has a majority and her deal may have rhe most votes for it, even though still not a majority.

I suspect Teresa May is still trying to get her deal through and is trying to be clever about it, she's going to attempt to prove its rhe one with thr most support ,,,that it is her deal and get it in via the back door.

I think she's playing the house for fools.

I was with you, Quartz, until here:

May tried to make a compromise between the two but neither side want

In what parallel universe has May been brokering compromise??
