Placard making for next weekend

Thought we could have a thread about placards - ideas for slogans on them, any hints on making them robust (waterproof?) but lightweight, size suggestions, etc.

Dd and I are going to use the bad weather today to do some pro-EU crafting on them Grin

If you are laminating, cut large holes in the card first, then cut smaller holes in the laminate so that the poster remains waterproof. Or staple through the clear bits.

LonelyTiredandLow · 16/03/2019 09:54

I'm not sure how big to make it tbh - we will be doing something afterwards and carrying it around would be annoying. I want it to be legible though!

My favourite is Borders against borders on a border terrier.

I wanted to say something about how ignoring over 700k protesters didn't work out well for Tony Blair...

Is that still the biggest protest in UK? Must be similar numbers?

OP posts:
BlackeyedGruesome · 16/03/2019 10:26

I would use the words of the leavers against them.

LonelyTiredandLow · 16/03/2019 10:28

Yes, Led By Donkies has a good selection of posters that do that very well.

I want a "The British in Europe are People too ... and so are the 3 million" placard because I'm annoyed with the PV people on this point Grin.

But I will be placardless as I am arriving on the cheapest of cheap Ryanair flights, with no luggage allowance.

Triglesoffy · 16/03/2019 23:22

The National Brexit March is coming near me. I want to protest. Is “Farage = C*” (but written in full) strong enough?

dreichuplands · 16/03/2019 23:53

DH is going as he will be in London but flying in so no placards sadly ☹️

RhubarbCrumbled · 17/03/2019 06:25

I grew up in a Yorkshire mining town surrounded by people chanting 'Maggie Maggie Maggie Out Out Out'. Would 'Brexit Brexit Brexit Stop Stop Stop' work? Or too obscure?

LonelyTiredandLow · 17/03/2019 07:03

Dd wants a sign just saying Stop Brexit. She's 7 but also wants to make some EU converse Grin

Will also try to find a way to sneak in a red toothbrush as a nod to Westminstenders thread.

Trig
I'd be tempted to hang a banner out of the window, but then you don't want your house on the news...
Am really enjoying the Led By Donkey's fb links as they follow the 'march'.

OP posts:
RhubarbCrumbled · 17/03/2019 07:15

My other option was 'Stop Brexit, please'. I like to be polite. And can anyone advise on size and materials?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/03/2019 07:20

I make A3 placards. I've varnished them, but that doesn't work well for ones that have printer ink on them.

MeowthThatsRight · 17/03/2019 07:27

My dsis made my 85 yo Gma a banner saying ‘I’m only here for the violence’ several years ago. She’ll be there with, she takes it to every protest she goes to.

Triglesoffy · 17/03/2019 09:33

Don’t want to out myself, but I think the marchers are staying one night in a town near me. I’m in two minds 1) behave with dignity 2) stalk them, find out which hotel they are staying in and then sit on my car horn all night until I get arrested for breaching the peace.
WWYD?

MeowthThatsRight · 17/03/2019 15:23

What would sitting on your cat horn all night achieve triglesoft?

dreichuplands · 17/03/2019 15:31

OP don't get arrested, should it be that your car alarm developed a fault and randomly sounded off and on all night that would plainly be different.
I would ignore them though they have the right to protest peacefully the same as the rest of us.

claracluck78 · 17/03/2019 15:40

My DTSs are 5.5 and want to march. BUT We are 100 miles away and OH is working on Saturday.

Shame as they want EXIT BREXIT on boards (they love shouting it as much as possible - no idea where they got it from!)

Triglesoffy · 17/03/2019 16:50

meowth. I would want to annoy and inconvenience them TBH. It’s a small town and the hotels are based in non residential areas so I wouldn’t be annoying the neighbours.

TheElementsSong · 21/03/2019 11:59

Bumping to ask for further placard practicalities as mentioned in the OP. We’re very last-minute about this, so no time to get anything printed or laminated. I’m planning to raid cardboard out of the recycling bin and write some stuff with sharpies. Which leaves me scratching my head for where I can get not-too-heavy handles for our placards. And I guess no way to waterproof them either.

OrzeiliHapiol · 21/03/2019 12:17

Also scratching my head what to write. My thoughts are not concise enough for a placard slogan.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2019 12:27

Happily the weather looks dry (maybe a little drizzley first thing way before the march)

What kind of handles do you want Element? Bamboo type sticks?

TheElementsSong · 21/03/2019 12:29

Really no idea, I’ve never made a placard in my life Blush Would bamboo garden canes work? I think we may have some if I take them off the plants in the garden!
