I am beyond relieved that it means No Deal?

But can anyone explain in very simple language what the vote was about??

(the newspapers can't seem to explain it clearly enough for my teeny mind...)

No Deal is the table
the only option is revoke

SciFiRules · 13/03/2019 20:50

So House of Commons voted against no deal, UK ask EU to extend, EU refuse, UK revoke A50 as the only way to deliver the will of the house....Fararges' head explodes....please oh please!

Bluntness100 · 13/03/2019 20:53

EU will not give an extension

The Eu will grant an extension, the question is simply how long for. Likely to end of June. If we don't have a deal agreed by parliament by then we need to revoke. Tonight's vote is to be passed into legislation. No deal is not an option.

Wrybread · 13/03/2019 20:58

So May is trying to ignore parliament. May's motion tomorrow is basically saying that she wants a third vote on her deal and if she gets it, we'll ask the EU for an extension so that we can get everything into place.

But....MPs can amend it. So it depends what they put forward and what the Speaker allows to be voted on tomorrow.

We could end up with people voting against the motion to extend because they don't want to vote on her deal again.

Or we could end up (like today) with amendments that completely change it, and have the government trying to get people to vote against their own motion, again.

Muddlingalongalone · 13/03/2019 20:59

Confused here too and agree the newspapers/Twitter/radio are not clear although I was putting children to bed sinultaneously

My question...
Why did a free vote as announced last night suddenly become a 3 line Whip?

Bluntness100 · 13/03/2019 21:00

May will go for a third crack at the vote for her deal because it's this or a lengthy delay, ie two years, I don't think that's ignoring parliament though, as she will respect no deal as not an option.

needthisthread · 13/03/2019 21:03

Revoke is surely the only option now?

This is such an embarrassment for the UK.

Bluntness100 · 13/03/2019 21:07

Revoke isn't yet thr only option, it's now her deal and exit, or revoke. Some MPs might get behind her deal to prevent no brexit, but I don't think anyone can predict how many.

So it's still a deal or revoke. That's all that tonight tells us.

cyclingmad · 13/03/2019 21:12

there is so much misinformation...this is direct quote from Theresa May as reported in all major news

Theresa May says there is a "clear majority" against a no-deal Brexit, but the Commons decision is not legally binding.

So there you have it - no deal is still an option. She is not compelled to make it legally binding either.

StealthPolarBear · 13/03/2019 21:13

I'm totally confused. Didn't she tell them to vote with their conscience?

Grinchly · 13/03/2019 21:14

No deal is not off the table.

No deal happens if there is no agreement revocation or extension before the deadline on March 29th.

Please understand this.

StealthPolarBear · 13/03/2019 21:16

Does anyone feel that at every stage we're told ONLY x or y can happen now, then a coupe of days later z happens and suddenly its as if everyone knew that all along.
Right from the very start when the referendum came in we were told we HAD to leave within two years of the referendum. Then all of a sudden the clock started ticking later on in the process.
Its almost as if no one has a clue :o but I wish they wouldn't tell us stuff as definite fact when it's not.

surferjet · 13/03/2019 21:18

Grinchly

Then what was the point of tonights vote?

( so confusing )

Holidayshopping · 13/03/2019 21:18

The EU will grant an extension

I thought every EU member had to agree for an extension to be granted? That is by no means a dead cert.

StealthPolarBear · 13/03/2019 21:20

Yes we've been told Spain (iirc) will veto

LaurieMarlow · 13/03/2019 21:20

No deal happens if there is no agreement revocation or extension before the deadline on March 29th.

Thing is though, the EU would be damn fools not to grant an extension. They’ll do it.

Then the onus will be on parliament to agree a deal because the only other option will be to revoke.

RancidOldHag · 13/03/2019 21:21

This wasn't a whipped vote, it was a free vote.

And it wasn't a vote in favour of 'no deal' - it was about whether 'no deal' can be excluded. As that seems to be the will of the House, it seems we are stuck with the current deal. Because without the need to avoid 'no deal', there is no reason whatsoever for make any more amendments. So we're pretty much stuck with what is currently in the table. Our only leverage is gone.

cyclingmad · 13/03/2019 21:22

There are talks going on behind the scenes with eurospectice parties in other countries to veto the extension which effectilvey ensures a no deal.

cyclingmad · 13/03/2019 21:23

eurosceptic*

LaurieMarlow · 13/03/2019 21:23

This wasn't a whipped vote, it was a free vote.

So what was whipped then?

StealthPolarBear · 13/03/2019 21:24

Why would it be a two year delay?

Sunbeam18 · 13/03/2019 21:25

It was a whipped vote!!

Ffsnosexallowed · 13/03/2019 21:26

@rancidoldhag it was changed from a free vote to a whipped vote after the amendment was voted through.

StealthPolarBear · 13/03/2019 21:28

I'm confused. We have been told loads if times that may told them to vote with their consciences. Is that not what happened.

Ffsnosexallowed · 13/03/2019 21:30

She changed her mind when the motion was changed. So it's OK to go with your conscience when it suits her. If there a list anywhere of who voted for what and who abstained?
