This morning Jeremy Hunt declared that, 'With vision on both sides we can find a way through that has the support of Parliament and also works for the EU'

Of course this is 18th February 2019 and the UK has yet to demostrate they understand the problem, much less have the vision to solve it. And we leave the EU next month.

It needs to be stressed at this point: DON'T FORGET TO FOCUS ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Everything else is a tactic to make you close your eyes and miss what is really going on. Everything. Brexit looks increasingly like a hypnotist making their subject do ever increasing acts of ridiculousness on stage. Except I do not know if the public or the politicians are that poor sod. It is the magician who uses tricks of slight of hand to make you look the wrong way, whilst they makes all the big moves out of your vision.

There are so many stories that are coming out to try and make you miss what the government are failing to do. Stay focused. We can't ignore all these stories, but understand whether they are really important to the end game too.

A labour split, a march on the 23rd March, talk of a PV, the Brady amendment, the Malthouse Compromise, Cooper-Boles halting no deal?

No we need more than that.

The time for fantasies are gone. Its time to face reality and be pragmatic. The only thing that matters is the approaching cliff. Which we will go over not on the 29th March but in the next couple of weeks. We might not realise the ground disappearing beneath our feet at first. Our momentum as we go forward will carry for a short while before gravity kicks in.

But we can not defy the laws of physics and suddenly be able to fly because we develop magic superhuman powers of vision.

And no one will come to save us either.

Our national humilation will be total, if we don't acknowledge what is coming and stop.

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson: Sometimes I no longer recognise my party

Tom Watson has launched an outspoken attack on "hard left" Labour members after seven MPs quit the party to sit as independents.

imo, he regards victims of anti-semitism as acceptable collateral damage he regards those who disagree with him as not worth his trouble to protect from harm His most fervent supporters regard them as enemies to be destroyed politically.

Conjecture doesnt make it true, id prefer something with a bit more.... evidence

Re-watching an old QI, the "what the hell" effect was mentioned.

www.willpowered.co/learn/the-what-the-hell-effect

I wonder if something related might happen after the 29th ? A sort of collective shoulder shrug of Remainers saying "if that's what you want" and simply letting the slide continue ?

The Spectator @ Spectator
'This is a sad day for all of us. I think our colleagues have come to a premature conclusion. But this is a moment for regret and reflection not for a mood of anger or a tone of triumph', says Tom Watson

This pic ring any bells?

Didnt realise Corbyn could paint, was there proof it was done by Labour party members or is just a handy thing to further some agenda?

Well it's clear that a Mumsnet political party would soon implode in a blitz of insults in Russian, pictures of cats and recipes for comfort food. Who are we, then, to criticise our elected representatives?

prettybird · 18/02/2019 16:33

My MP is very actively pro-Palestinian. It doesn't stop him being from being against anti-semitism. The two are not - or should not be - incompatible. Confused

RedToothBrush · 18/02/2019 16:34

Arj Singh @ singharj
Good to see my mentions have turned into an argument about who's more racist - Corbyn's Labour or Angela Smith's The Independent Group.

Take me to my posts of cats, recipes and googlised Russian.

I am untainted by these controversies.

Local Tory MP in denial about Brexit being a factor in Honda closure:

< Yes, the Japan-EU trade deal removes tariffs, but that's over several years from now until 2032
and even then, factories with a much shorter jouney to market should still have that advantage.
However, with No Deal, Uk cars would face higher EU tariffs than Japanese ones ! >

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-47282603

In a tweet, Mr Tomlinson said: "Honda are clear this is based on global trends and not Brexit, as all European market production will consolidate in Japan in 2021."
...
Last year, the senior vice-president of Honda Europe warned that if the UK left the EU without a deal, it would cost his company tens of millions of pounds.
Ian Howells told the BBC that quitting the bloc without an agreement would affect the carmaker's competitiveness in Europe.

poster Well, the alternatives to my conjectures:

  • He is personally anti-semitic
  • He is too dim & incompetent to realise the degree of anti-semitism in his party
Tonsilss · 18/02/2019 16:39

So will they oust Tom Watson now?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/02/2019 16:40

I think statement 2 is more likely than statement 1

or

  1. being pro rights for palestinian people has ruffled some feathers
Violetparis · 18/02/2019 16:40

Just seen the clip of Angela Smith 'funny tinge' doing the rounds on twitter, it's like a scene from The Thick of It.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/02/2019 16:41

Whos been ousted have I missed something, geniune question?

RedToothBrush · 18/02/2019 16:42

BigChoc, to a certain extent I do think many of the issues the car industry were going through were going to lead to plant closures. DH said Ellesmere Port would go regardless of Brexit before the ref. But Brexit certainly is the icing on the cake.

DGRossetti · 18/02/2019 16:43

My MP is very actively pro-Palestinian. It doesn't stop him being from being against anti-semitism. The two are not - or should not be - incompatible.

One of the issues that historians might focus on in the current epoch, is how thinking was allowed to become so binary. If not this then that. It's removed peoples ability to think for those that did think, and empowered people who couldn't be bothered to think previously into thinking they're some kind of fucking guru.

It's how Trump got it, it's how Brexit was framed, and it will be how we end up at war.

Being able to hold, process and advocate conflicting contradicting views is what makes us human. Take that away, and we cease to be human.

There's always been an undercurrent - I've had a few arguments where people fail to grasp that understanding and supporting are not synonyms.

Rather than dumbing down arguments, it would have been a lot better to raise the debate.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/02/2019 16:46

Stupid thing to do absolutely

And?...

BiglyBadgers · 18/02/2019 16:47

Well it's clear that a Mumsnet political party would soon implode in a blitz of insults in Russian, pictures of cats and recipes for comfort food. Who are we, then, to criticise our elected representatives?

I think it's pretty clear that while we all share a hatred of brexit and a love of cats much of the rest of our politics is pretty different. As much as I love you guys I'm not sure we'd ever all comfortably share the same party.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 16:48

red I've worked in the car industry, which faces several problems, in particular over-capacity in European plants as a whole.
Plant closures have been expected, as the weakest go to the wall ...
BUT
Brexit delivers hammer blows which could make some British plants the weakest:

  • disruption to the JIT supply chain - many firms keep only 1 hour of stock
  • 10% tariffs on exports

Of course, the above applies to any industry with JIT

TatianaLarina · 18/02/2019 16:53

Corbyn is so pro-Palestinian that he ignores everything its supporters do, ignores all the crimes

Agreed but it’s not just the Palestinian angle, some left wing anti neoliberalists see finance as a Jewish conspiracy - Rothschild, Soros, influencing ‘global’ events to their advantage - a form of economic anti-semitism.
