Will you be disappointed if Brexit goes smoothly

Genuine question to the Preppers - how will you feel if Brexit goes through with no significant shortages or civil unrest? Will you heave a sigh of relief and sleep better at night, or feel a tiny bit flat and disappointed?

It's the slightly excited tone of some of the Prepper threads that has me wondering this. As if having a reason to hoard is fulfilling some squirrelesque instinct, which my be thwarted if the hoards prove unnecessary?

I’ll be delighted if it goes smoothly. Means my shopping bill will be much less for a few months and I’ll be able to trip the light fantastic.

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 17:56

Dh and I were looking at our stash and hoping it would just be something to dip into or give to afood bank because it all goes smoothly and there are no problems.
Both voted Remain.
Dh basically keeps away from the internet because the stupid fucking nonsense people are still coming out with just makes him angry. He's a mild mannered sort of bloke.

Littlespaces · 15/02/2019 18:15

My dh is in an industry where he comes across the reality of the situation and it isn't very comforting.

Not that I intend to buy a sparkly green Porsche anytime soon but this does illustrate what is coming down the line for us with WTO tariffs.

I doubt my exH will be getting a brand new BMW again in 2 years Grin I expect the lease price will rocket.

WorriedJu · 15/02/2019 19:20

I'm wondering what the posters who have stocked up on water purification tablets will do with them if our water supply does not become contaminated after Brexit.

Camping trip anyone?

I think my Asda is already prepping us for food shortages. No beef this week. I was planning some batch cooking for the freezer.

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 19:21

My Mum's town had a water contamination problem a couple of years ago. Forget Brexit. Handy to have.
As a prepper, I have them anyway Grin

SparklySneakers · 15/02/2019 19:27

Do they make the water taste of choline though?

SparklySneakers · 15/02/2019 19:28

I've got some in my amazon basket awaiting feedback

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 19:32

If it's that or no water .... again do not think it a likely Brexit outcome but there are alternatives for purification if water if tablets aren't your thing. They are either more arduous or more expensive.

MrsTerryPratcett · 15/02/2019 19:33

We always have them anyway. And yes, the water tastes gross. Fun fact, the iodine also helps with radiation sickness if Russia gets really feisty.

Do you not think Brexit is enough to worry about, MrsT? Confused

Exactly that. I'm planning to do two long routes in May self-supported, one with a friend and one alone. I also volunteer with my daughter's Scout troupe and she'll start her DoE soon enough.

I'm a prepper but also into reducing waste so none of my stash has ever gone to waste.

pointythings · 15/02/2019 20:02

I want to get some water purification tablets just to have in case of cryptosporidium contamination - which has happened on a large scale in the UK. The latest large outbreak was not so long ago. All it takes is for something simple to go wrong with the process of water purification, storage or piped transport.

MrsTerryPratcett · 15/02/2019 20:06

Hope for the best, plan for the worst!

I am a few days behind with the Brexit threads - I assume that this news has been posted today?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47251643

The UK has struck a deal with the US to preserve £12.8bn of trade after Brexit

The mutual recognition agreement replicates the current deal between the EU and US on technical standards for exported goods.

whenthewhistleblows · 15/02/2019 20:44

If that means that we get stuff from the US at the same price and to the same standard then I’m bloody delighted!

whenthewhistleblows · 15/02/2019 20:46

I’m a remainer btw and I would love love LOVE to be proved wrong. I would happily wear a hair shirt and beat myself with birch twigs until the end of time if everything goes ok.

Littlespaces · 15/02/2019 20:47

God. So would I.

I would be so happy for my children.

I'm very angry about the almighty gamble and risk.

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 20:54

"The UK-US agreement is not a free trade deal - which can relax trading rules, reduce taxes (tariffs) on imports and exports, and grant easier market access."

Juells · 15/02/2019 20:56

Fun fact, the iodine also helps with radiation sickness if Russia gets really feisty.

Haha, somewhere in a high cupboard in my kitchen I have several envelopes of iodine tablets which were distributed to all households in Ireland in 2002. Something to do with fear of a terrorist attack on Sellafield I think.

Clavinova · 15/02/2019 20:59

However, the government says it will benefit a range of sectors, including tech, telecoms and pharmaceuticals. The latter accounts for £7.7bn of exports to the US - about 18% of the value of all goods

Mr Fox said : We look forward to sitting down at the negotiating table with the Americans after we leave the European Union, to strike an ambitious new free trade agreement

The US ambassador to the UK, Woody Johnson, also welcomed the news, saying Washington was determined that US-UK trade will continue to flourish

whenthewhistleblows · 15/02/2019 21:01

I’m not sure what the ‘12.8 billion’ deal with the US in reality. Is that the same amount as what we have now?

Re water purification tablets - you can get them for a couple of quid off amazon. I don’t expect there to be any need for them but I can soak up that cost and it gives me peace of mind.

Clavinova · 15/02/2019 21:02

Will you be disappointed if Brexit goes smoothly?

Apt title.

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 21:05

Yes, sitting down to discuss a trade deal when our economy has been flushed down the toilet with no Deal Brexit and we are desperate.
