Westminstenders: Competitive Stupidity

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2019 16:00

A week of wondering which MP is going to be the most dumb.

There is stiff competition between parties and remain / leave.

Expect incredible bids of ignorance and incompetence to curl your toes, with a bit of constitutional craziness thrown in for good measure.

Valentine's Day beckons...

... And so does the No Deal Divorce.

I think May's kept that White Paper as emergency bog roll.

BiglyBadgers · 11/02/2019 16:45

Can I have your thoughts on this article please?

I think my thoughts are best summed up by a shrug and "so?"

You are under the impression that I think becoming part of a larger power is a bad thing. We have a seat at the top table in the EU and a huge amount of influence on its direction. As part of a larger group of countries we have clout and power far beyond our size.

I like being in the club. Having blue passports and the chance to make shit trade deals is not even close to adequate compensation for everything we lose by leaving.

Oh, and now I've answered your question perhaps you could answer mine.

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 16:47

So the EU is insisting we all have four children is it @StepLadders007 ?
And linking to Breitbart rather confirms my suspicion that you have a problem with Jewish people.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/02/2019 16:47

Fortress Britain - a fight against the early stages of globalisation - was advocated by Michael Foot and rejected by voters in the 1983 GE

because at that time politicians and the media were prepared to explain why an island / archipelago couldn't survive like that,
when it was so far from self-sufficient in food, raw materials, components for manufactured goods etc.

The UK can indeed vote to exclude itself from globalisation; it can't vote to make everyone else do so

A business can decide e.g. to give up all use of the internet and computers, go back to traditional paper ledgers and paper plans;
it can't force all its competitors to do likewise. So it would crash

Countries around the world participate in globalisation and join together in regional trade blocs,
because not to do so means their economy and prosperity crashing

The EU is held up as an example of a highly integrated trade bloc
and other regional trade blocs are gradually copying this integration.

StepLadders007 · 11/02/2019 16:47

Are Uni's going bust because people have woken up to to the fact that the courses they offer aren't going to help the course takers get a well paid career in the long run?

I did a 3 year course on Gender studies, why am I not earning £60K a year? Would you like fries with that?

StepLadders007 · 11/02/2019 16:48

So the EU is insisting we all have four children is it

Eh?

confirms my suspicion that you have a problem with Jewish people

and again, eh?

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 16:49

Anyone catch the Hungarian announcement that if you raise 4 children you will be exempt from tax (I forget which one, possibly income tax) for life.

I did. I like measures which show imagination. If nothing else it's something to think about. Although one thing the UK doesn't do as a whole is much thinking. Even when novel and different approaches are allowed to emerge, it's sufficient for a man in a suit (apologies for the gender specificity, "person" doesn't fit, and I can't think of an equivalent for women ...) to harumph and bat it away with a "what nonsense" and it's never heard of again.

Like all the alternatives to the poll tax, for example.

TheElementsSong · 11/02/2019 16:50

You know, if only we had that link to the 500-page Brexit White Paper, we'd have all the answers and all of this discussion on Westministenders wouldn't be needed.

(While we're on the subject of missing links, whatever happened to that other poster who proudly linked a spoof Twitter account as evidence of the evils of the EU? Grin)

StepLadders007 · 11/02/2019 16:51

You are under the impression that I think becoming part of a larger power is a bad thing

I was under no impression, I was asking you a question. That's fine, thanks for your answer.

I, however, am not on board with giving up our Sovereignty to a group of people we could never get rid of if they chose to do something we didn't like.

But hey, that's me.

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 16:51

Of course for some "Battle for Births" has a nasty ring to it. DF was born in the early 1930s Hmm

jasjas1973 · 11/02/2019 16:51

The courses Uni's offer is down to the Govt not wanting high youth unemployment levels and lack of regulation.

Its got sod all to do with the EU.

StepLadders007 · 11/02/2019 16:53

Its got sod all to do with the EU

Good luck finding where I said it did.

I was actually wondering what is was doing on this thread or does Brexit get the blame?

Jericho1 · 11/02/2019 16:54

Looking quite Trump universityish, DGRosetti.

Like the Brexit Crash Out, they're obviously going to keep the other ones secret until ordinary folks have been swindled and bankrupted.

TheElementsSong · 11/02/2019 16:54

I'm thinking of changing my username to 500pageBrexitWhitePaper Grin

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 16:55

@StepLadders007 , you linked to Breitbart. Steve Bannon Central. Nasty right wing feckers.

prettybird · 11/02/2019 16:55

Whilst Parliament has remained sovereign throughout our membership of the EU, it has not always felt like that.

Source: Government White Paper "The United Kingdom’s exit from, and new partnership with, the European Union" produced in Febraury 2017 and updated in May 2017 but still not the 500 page White Paper with all the worked detail, which I'm looking forward to reading Wink

Actually, re-reading that original White Paper (produced after the Referendum, remember Angry), it included gems in the Prime Minister's introduction like, "The strength and support of 65 million people willing us to make it happen." Confused and " And the overwhelming majority of people – however they voted – want us to get on with it too." Hmm ...and, just for Steps Wink "building a stronger, fairer, more Global Britain too." Grin

Oh the joys Hmm

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2019 16:55

Tbh, the hospitality industry is currently thriving atm. Its hard work and graft, but if you are prepared to flog fries with your hipster burger you can make a good living AND beat the corporate pigs.

Pretty that post Brexit, fries won't quite be as popular and I'm not convinced turnip fritters cooked in unrefined lard are going to win Michelin Stars any time soon.

We now have a service based economy not a manufacturing one. For lots of reasons, but better workers rights are one of them. As is us not having a huge amount of natural resources.

Who knows. DS was dead set against going to Uni, and despite a little hiatus has ended up in a decent job in a far better position that his contemporaries who did go to university. Not only does he have a job (albeit fuck all savings) but his total debt is £0. Christ knows how he'd pay back £30,000 over whatever it is.

I wonder if those student debts are enforceable post-Brexit should a student fuck off and never return ?

StepLadders007 · 11/02/2019 16:57

you linked to Breitbart. Steve Bannon Central. Nasty right wing feckers

Which means I have a problem with Jewish people, right? ...and I'm not even in the Labour party.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/02/2019 16:59

I lose all respect for anyone who quotes from neo-Nazi media

Breitbart naturally sympathises with far right govt in Hungary
Their govt's real problem is that they are infringing the human and political rights requirements of the EU,
So the EU is trying to suspend its membership benefits via Article 7

Funnily enough, Hungary is determined to stay in the EU, because it need the handouts

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 16:59

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 16:59

You used the word "globalisation " repeatedly. It is code for an anti Semitic slur. I didn't even start on inviting you to join the twats at the current heart of the Labour Party. But they love that shit too.

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 17:00

Not universally ...

Possibly. Or you might just be a thick cunt.

And Brexit stops this how exactly?

Do remind me how it stops the same thing?

We just we get a bunch of fuckers - like Bannon - who openly support fascism right now.

And they aren't elected.

At least there is a voting system with EU officials. Not just rich white dude who like abusing women.
