Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

Some examples of my adventures.
L-R - dehydrated pineapple/peach/apricot in one jar; pressure canned homemade passata; pressure canned stewed apple; dehydrated mushrooms; pressure canned turkey chilli.
I'm a lightweight compared to some Grinbut none needs electricity to store.

My last post was specifically to @croftermum .

downcasteyes · 04/03/2019 10:46

I've bought enough food to last about 4 weeks, probably a bit longer- mostly things that store for a very long time (canned fruit and veg, pasta, oil, dried pulses, flour, sugar as well as frozen veg). In the event of a prolonged power cut, I can cook on my log burner. It's not just shortages that I am concerned about, but also price gouging.

I figure if severe shortages last any longer than that, we will have much bigger issues to face, socially speaking.

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 10:47

Exactly @downcasteyes , anything long term is a broader social issue.

croftermum · 04/03/2019 10:53

@bellinisurge that looks fantastic, thanks for sharing that. I definitely need to start getting more involved in drying and preserving etc. its a life goal of mine to become entirely self sufficient ( not likely to be achieved) but I am enjoying attempting it! its a long learning process! Ill join the other thread, thanks

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 10:56

@croftermum , if there are other people in the same situation as you locally, is pooling resources possible. Dehydrating and pressure canning does require a bit of effort at various points in the process as well as some investment to start off (pressure canning in particular). Perhaps I am being naive but I wonder whether you and some amiable neighbours or friends could get the necessary gear together.

BlackeyedGruesome · 04/03/2019 11:06

Get the food your son needs. Stock up on anything autism related. Chewellry, sensory toys, specific food and drink, spare plates or cups if he uses specific ones, etc.

chillinapot · 04/03/2019 11:21

@mumsnet I think you need to either moderate or post an exclusion clause on this thread. Unsafe food preservation advice and illegal suggestions to use camping stoves on balconies is unwise.

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 11:26

Whatever @chillinapot . These are general prepper things not Brexit things. As I flag up every time I post.
Your biggest concern should be that people are not trusting the assurances given by Brexiteers that everything will be FIIIINE.
Btw, my kitchen, my rules. And if I follow USDA advice on pressure canning to the letter, I should be fine. Like Brexiteer love of US chlorinated chicken, right?

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 11:27

As for camping stoves on balconies? Pretty sure I said that doesn't solve the issue of fire safety and you need to think about that.
More facts Brexiteers like to ignore.

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 11:47

Here you go @chillinapot - what part of "While that should cover the ventilation issue, the fire safety issue is one to still consider" means I said it's fine.
And what part of "it isn't likely to be necessary for Brexit" means I think you need to do it for Brexit.

prettybird · 04/03/2019 12:30

I think MNHQ will be able form their own judgement as to whose advice should be moderated or warned about, if not deleted Grin

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 13:01

FWIW, I'm in a lot of US groups on FB about homesteading and food preservation. They are regularly talking about supermarket food safety alerts with links published by the supermarkets themselves. To encourage each other on growing their own or using locally sourced and verifiable produce for preserving. Because US food standards are patchy.

KatyMac · 04/03/2019 13:39

There is some fab new technology coming soonish (3-8yrs) on the battery storage front I meaning 6-8 car battery size ones can I've used domestically....but not before brexit!

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 04/03/2019 13:54

So you lot are the reason that I can’t get the only milk my dairy allergic child drinks! You’re all stockpiling it. I knew it was only bloody Vegan January.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 04/03/2019 13:54

*wasn’t

croftermum · 04/03/2019 13:55

maybe you should have prepped for that then...…….. jus saying.

downcasteyes · 04/03/2019 14:00

"So you lot are the reason that I can’t get the only milk my dairy allergic child drinks! You’re all stockpiling it. I knew it was only bloody Vegan January."

I think non-vegans are more likely to be stockpiling UHT dairy milk, to be honest.

You can actually make your own oat milk - it's not that hard!

ChakiraChakra · 04/03/2019 14:01

If people can't take an idea a stranger on the internet posts and research and make a judgement on it for themselves... Hmm

I'm a bit befuddled that chilli has taken issue with advice to think carefully and be cautious about safety as being unsafe Hmm

Canning and preserving can (boom boom) breed incredibly unsafe bacteria and nasties. It scares me too much to want to get into much beyond jam, chutney and apple scrap vinegar (so far!) personally, but I'm certain that anybody inspired by bellini to get seriously into say canning will have to do a fuck tonne of research before they get going, so there's no way they're not going to find out about the risks and what's important to prevent them. Hmm

Croftermum this definitely is still a brexit prep thread, but we like to chat and ramble 😁

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 04/03/2019 14:03

Nah. Would hate to take milk from other allergic too...

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 04/03/2019 14:07

I commented after reading the person who has 50 cartons of Oatly Barista. And I was joking anyway! Oat milk is easy to make and tastes vile. Oatly barista is yummy. It’s ok. She will only get a bit of Osteoporosis when she’s older whilst we wait for Oatly to make some more. It’s fine.

ChakiraChakra · 04/03/2019 14:10

If only there were other non-dairy sources of calcium... Hmm

Oatly barista has had supply issues for months and months.

downcasteyes · 04/03/2019 14:15

"Oatly barista has had supply issues for months and months."

This. But it's always been possible to get some where I live - it's just that different shops have had different stock levels at different times. The original oatly, and other oat milks on the market, are really not that different if you're desperate.

The other poster may also have a family with allergies.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 04/03/2019 14:29

Again, I was joking. Honestly, I’m not even remotely or mildly concerned or cross. I am remarkably chilled about the whole thing. Not a problem. I buy 40 at a time usually anyway. It’s all good.

ChakiraChakra · 04/03/2019 14:32

Sorry if I misunderstood the tone of your posts Blush
