Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

@falcon5 And I bet you have home insurance too, which as we all know is what causes domestic mishaps Grin

@SparklySneakers and @Autumn crow, I'm going to need a link to purchasable (as in not a recipe) chilli lime m*rmalade. Despite it using a filty word, it sounds amazing. The one shop I could find via dr google had sold out, which just goes to show.

I never understand how it is possible to take two ingredients and make the sum of their parts less. Like mrmalade. Jam (good) + oranges (good) = mrmalade (bitter chewy jar of disappointment). Mocha is another example - why would you take perfectly good coffee and chocolate and make then into something so disappointing! And yet coffee chocolate desserts and Lidl's nuttella with coffee in it are the food of gods! Weird. Or maybe a conspiracy or something.

Rose's lime m*rmalade (jam) is good though, now I want a jar for old time's sake!

Amazing stuff.

Speaking of jars of fruit preserved in sugar, that's what was done in ww2 to preserve fruit for when there wasn't much. Nowadays sugary jam seems so far from a healthy dose of fruit, what are brexit preppers' thoughts? Fresh fruit and veg does seem like the most likely thing that there's going to be a shortage of very quickly. I know lots of us have freezers full of veg, tinned fruitI'd rather eat my own eyeballs and veg, and one or two are doing impressive things with dehydrators. Anybody getting jam or dried fruits, or anything else I haven't thought of? I do have some dried fruit in the stash, it seemed like the most efficient way of storing fruit.

I'll buy a sack of onions and potatoes nearer the time, they last a month or two in the cool garage even in April/May.

ChakiraChakra · 28/02/2019 10:03

Thanks sparklysneakers, that looks Gooood and they do a chilli jam too 😍

MadauntofA · 28/02/2019 10:07

I love stewed apples so have done a v large batch (apples, few raisins and cinnamon) and frozen in portions

ChakiraChakra · 28/02/2019 10:22

A warm welcome to anybody finding their way over from the AIBU thread, whether you're incredulous or intrigued, come on it in, sit down and have a cuppa I hope you brought the milk I'm sure I can move a box and find room for you to sit down somewhere... uh...

bellinisurge · 28/02/2019 10:29

Curiously when I lived in a country that had rationing, you got an extra ration of sugar in autumn so you could make jam if you had fruit. I remember giving my extra ration to a family of keen jam makers so it didn't go to waste with me.
I dehydrate a lot of my stuff as I am a general prepper. Jam making requires about 50/50 fruit/sugar proportions and is best done with autumn fruit when it is at its most tasty.
In total Prepper Mode and NOT Brexit prepper, I would alert you to the delight of dandelion jelly. Locally picked yellow dandelion heads make delicious jelly (hard work but worth it). Preferably from a source that isn't by a road or generally likely to be polluted. It takes loads of sugar as well but the result is like local honey for deliciousness and positive benefits.
Again NOT needed for Brexit but if your interest is picqued, look it up. I did it for the first time last year and am definitely going to do it again this year.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2019 10:34

As for buying jam to store? Nice in porridge, used instead of sugar (and milk) in black tea in Russia. Nice on toast. All good as long as you are honest with yourself about it being sugary deliciousness rather than health food.

BadlyAgedMemes · 28/02/2019 10:37

A thread I've missed by trying to ignore all things Brexit for a while! I'm sure I've posted this crappy picture of my new "pantry" in another thread already, but I can't resist. There's more stuff on hooks now, hygiene and household stuff is elsewhere, and booze and treats are hidden in my closet.

I've just ordered some Huel after reading this thread and seeing it mentioned. I kept meaning to, and never did. It's only partly because it's concentrated nutrition and easy to stash away. I've been struggling with the motivation to make and eat proper meals lately.

What with the lovely weather we had, I've finally tidied the garden, too. (Might have accidentally killed my sage while I was at it :( ) I'm planning on planting three different kinds of tomatoes and various salady leafy things. Won't be much use for April, but hopefully I'll happy of them later on. In hungry gap, if there's an issue with fresh produce, I can sprout alfalfa and other seeds.

BadlyAgedMemes · 28/02/2019 10:37

Aww, crap... I forgot it posted sideways the last time, too!

MadauntofA · 28/02/2019 10:38

Also much better (small amount) mixed in with plain yoghurt compared to sweetener filled "low fat/ healthy" yoghurts

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2019 11:09

I might have peaked too early, I made lemon curd, but it doesn't store for long.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2019 11:18

There is a thing of beauty called raspberry curd. We bought a jar of it at a little shop in S. Wales last year. It is one of the yummiest things I have ever eaten. I've never made curd so bravo for doing it.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/02/2019 11:19

I have a load of homemade jam so we'll be sorted on that front!

prettybird · 28/02/2019 11:30

Mrs Bridges make banoffee curd.

I try a lot of Blush it at Gardening Scotland every year Grin

I have sooooo many jars of home made jam and chutney from our raspberries, blackcurrants and Victoria plums. Also made a load if redcurrant jelly last year from my bumper crop of redcurrants.

Also in my stockpile is plum gin, cinnamon and plum gin and redcurrant gin (using Lidl 40% gin and homegrown fruit) Grin

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 28/02/2019 11:44

@BadlyAgedMemes, what a professional looking stash you have there, liking your shelves

There is a thing of beauty called raspberry curd.
Shuffles off to check if Ocado sell it. Wonders why I never get anything done.

prettybird · 28/02/2019 11:57

Mrs Bridges also do a raspberry curd. You may find your local garden centre stocks it (Dobbies does in Scotland)

ChakiraChakra · 28/02/2019 13:04

Lemon curd drizzle cake is where it's at.

If it's curd we're discussing, may I also recommend Orange Curd from Mrs Darlington (Crewe, but other locations do stock it). Delightful. I'd recommend the passion fruit curd, but I haven't tried it yet, that's in the brexit stash.

FranklinTheCat · 28/02/2019 14:44

No pictures because mine is a mess: we have two large lidded plastic boxes in the cupboard under the stairs (fortunately have a list as I keep forgetting what's in them!). A shelf and a bit full of tins (stacked 2/3 deep). And part of the cupboard in the spare room is stacked with nappies, wet wipes, kitchen rolls and loo rolls. None of it is a thing of beauty but it is stashed and I can put my hand on anything in three minutes flat. Now starting to focus on the freezer and fridge.

Do you find your DPs/DHs are on board with your stockpiling? Mine thinks I've gone mad but has been quietly humouring me. I keep explaining it's win-win - if we don't need it, we'll save on grocery bills in the next few months. He is going to have a fit when he sees the bottled water in the shed though....

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 14:49

No DP or DH here so all good on that front. Bottled water from the fridge in the summer will be very welcome if not needed for general purpose.

FranklinTheCat · 28/02/2019 14:49

I have been taking the approach of buying an extra one of everything as I've replaced it since January. Have been going for variety rather than depth of supplies. So a kilo of pasta, the same of spaghetti, the same of rice, etc, rather than 4kg of pasta. This is partly for space reasons.

We normally run a well-stocked cupboard anyway as I like to have stuff in and to take advantage of special offers. So this just feels like the next step. I'm not sure how much we've got as the freezer is fairly full at the moment but I suspect we have enough for 2-3 weeks once I've frozen some milk (although I have bought Moo).

FranklinTheCat · 28/02/2019 14:50

That's what I thought - it keeps for years. We're planning a self-catering holiday later this year so could always take it then. But I think it's not a bad idea generally in case the water was ever unexpectedly off for the day.

rosie39forever · 28/02/2019 14:55

Mrs Bridges banoffee curd is indeed food of the gods, I can neither confirm or deny that there are several jars in my stash, but raspberry you say .... gets coat and heads to the garden centre.
