Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

Mum tried telling me yesterday that is stocking up now will lead to shortages. She'd been speaking to my leaver sister who is worried but not preparing. She posts Britain first things on Facebook and is a bitch so I have no sympathy for any struggles she has as a result of her vote. Anyway, I explained to mum how supplies work at the moment so there is no concerns that preparing now will cause shortages. I often wonder how I came to be so different from my siblings. Ex army brother is Tory to the core despite now working in a sector that has seen drastic cuts. No idea about my other siblings but my sister would share Britain first posts so that's one of the reasons I'm now NC with her.

I need to replace the beans I've used. Still need batteries and a torch or two.

What will today bring i wonder?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 22/02/2019 08:45

We can’t choose our families sparkly but thank goodness you haven’t been influenced by their hate.

Loads of torches on amazon. I’d consider both a battery powered one, and a wind up torch.

PoppingBubbles · 22/02/2019 08:52

Thanks to those that helped me out with lists and suggestions.
We may be able to squeeze our budgets to double up between now and then. Bit worried it's not going to be enough, and am highly annoyed at myself.

How about perishables? Bread, milk, yogurts, cheese, salad etc?

Cloudtree · 22/02/2019 08:58

How about perishables? Bread, milk, yogurts, cheese, salad etc

Bread - bread mixes/flour and yeast/part baked bread/crackers and wraps/tortillas (flour and lard)
yoghurts - I like easiyo since it only needs the packets and water but you can make your own using milk and some dried milk.
cheese - has a long shelf life anyway plus it freezes well or can even be dipped in wax and kept in a cupboard
salad - I'd get some cut and come again leaves and extra seeds. Look at sprouting seeds or pea shoots as an alternative.

SparklySneakers · 22/02/2019 09:03

I think I'll grow some lettuce and spinach on the kitchen windowsill. It's nice and sunny in the afternoon on there.
@bellinisurge please could you tell me more about your spinach plant? Baby spinach is one of the only leaves my fusspot will eat and it's a favourite of mine too.

Gosh a torch seems like another level of prepping. I have several and a good supply of batteries so if they're needed I'll be fine, just hadn't thought about it.

I read somewhere ages ago that good preppers (as in the very serious type way before brexshit was on the horizon) have alcohol bottles because they can be used as bartering when things get tough. I hardly drink and was given a case of wine at xmas so that's that sorted!

I've also been musing that I've been including feeding my parents in my prepping, who I wouldn't even dream of mentioning it to because they're convinced that any brexit will be good. It does mean my supply won't go very far but it's something better than nothing. They're both on meds that they won't have stockpiled so I'm worried about them from that point of view. Nothing I can do about that, apart from some over the counter stuff I've got that can replace one of the meds, if needed.

Listening to the radio yesterday and they were saying that we definitely don't have time to get trade deals in place with even half of the countries we currently trade with under EU agreements. Sounded like non-EU countries. We've managed to negotiate 7, out of I think somewhere between 50-80. There are 35 days to go and we seem nowhere near any sort of deal - let alone time to prepare and implement such a deal. When you look at how poorly Universal Credit, which had no such urgent and final deadlines and years to be prepared for a gradual move over, it's extremely hard to imagine that things will go seamlessly or even with only minor hiccups now for brexshit, no matter what happens politically between now and then - especially with MPs defecting left right and centre. The absolute best I can hope for is a delay to the date, which I don't even know if is possible. I guess I'm saying I'm starting to get much more worried.

bellinisurge · 22/02/2019 09:05

@SparklySneakers , I just grow what's called perpetual spinach from seed. it is very forgiving.

Cloudtree · 22/02/2019 09:11

Growing your own on the windowsill is very easy. I start all of my plants indoors. Herbs are particularly easy but the easiest way of all is to buy a pot of herbs from lidl. They're less than £1 and each pot contains loads of plants. So you can take a pot of basil and split it and get about 8 basil plants out of it. Repot them and they'll grow well and last for ages. The reason they generally die quickly is because they're crammed in (for looks on the supermarket shelf) and so they use the nutrients in the soil very quickly.

I have a coriander plant in the garden which was part of a lidl pot and has been going strong for over two years now.

SparklySneakers · 22/02/2019 09:12

Cripes I've just looked at the Britain first page Confused what the hell was she thinking??

Thanks Bellini I'll get some seeds

rosie39forever · 22/02/2019 09:58

IMPORTANT QUESTION
Can you freeze butter?
I can't face the shit show of no deal without french butter😬
TIA

SparklySneakers · 22/02/2019 09:58

@rosie39forever yes you can. I have a kilo in there after learning you can 😊

Moorfields · 22/02/2019 10:02

Yes butter, cheese and milk can be frozen.
Milk in plastic pouches (like they have in coffee shops) can be frozen stacked so saving space.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/02/2019 10:06

Bread: Aldi cream crackers are long dated and 40pish a packet. A good bread substitute. They do bread flour and yeast sachets. White lasts longer. Yeast til the autumn.

The part cooked bread only lasts a month or so. Not got mine yet and thus might not get any. May buy a couple for the Easter holidays in a week or twos time. They go a bit yeasty and sticky if left too long. Cooked some a month out of date and they stuck to the packet. Tasted ok but not as good as fresh.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 22/02/2019 10:59

I think cheese is better grated if you're to freeze it - it changes texture and becomes more crumbly so better for cooking with. I bought a big block of cheese ready to be grated and put into freezer bags as I bought 12 pizza bases for my stockpile which will be no good without cheese!

Flurgle · 22/02/2019 12:08

Part cooked bread almost into April dates.
Noticed in Morrison’s they have a lot of tins/packets on offer. Cynical me thinks they know we are stashing...!

I reckon we could go a couple of weeks, longer but it would get v boring.
I have
Pasta sauce and pasta
Beans
Tinned peas and tinned fruit (won’t eat unless we need to but it can go to the food bank if we don’t need it)
Dog food well into April (might get more as it will get eaten)
Loo roll x20
Tomatoes and passata, rice, tuna, cheese (dates are into May)
Lentils
Frozen veg and fruit.
Pudding rice and custard
Cereal bars, biccies, crispbread and crackers
Fajita packs
Quorn in freezer
Enough sanitary protection for a month at least for two of us.
Cereal
Moo milk - not much as won’t use unless desperate.
Pizza base mix, flour
Peanut butter
Nuts and dried fruit

We will use all this stuff anyway - I just won’t have to shop for staples for a while.

Still to get- lemon juice and jam from m and s (am fussy bugger)
Might freeze some butter actually. Other than that just going to top up if we eat stuff.

Going to get a couple of wind up torches as it’s a good idea anyway really!

Flurgle · 22/02/2019 12:12

Oh forgot
Olive oil and ground coffee OF COURSE!

IDoN0tCare · 22/02/2019 12:24

I will be experimenting with freezing grapes today. They going to be washed and put into tiny containers. My youngest loves them for lunch, so it’ll be interesting to see how they turn out.

I keep harping on about it, but please shop around, when you’re stocking up on tins and dried food. B&M and Home bargains are the best. Try pound shops too. I go into the cheaper shops first and compare prices online, while I’m there. You’d be shocked at the difference in prices.

I walk past this scruffy shop, in town, that smells of damp and everything is just put out still wrapped. I swear you’d be judged harsher being seen walking out of this place, than walking out of a charity shop. 😁 Bty, I love charity shops. I plucked up the courage to go in and omg, it’s amazing. I got jars of loyd Grossman sauce (with a good date!) for 50p and Nairn’s oat biscuits for 50p! All with a good date and undamaged packets/jars.

When you’re out, always carry a rucksack and cash. It’s amaz what you can pick up. Even if I’m just dropping my wee girl off at college and walking for a bus, I’ll call into different shops and pick up any really good bargains. You learn to shop smart.

On a slightly different note, I accidentally gave the bus driver a Euro, this morning and he said I should hold onto it, because it might be worth a fiver, after Brexit. 🤣 Hmm 🤔 All joking aside, if you have money, it might be worth buying a few euro now and putting it away for holidays.

IDoN0tCare · 22/02/2019 12:34

Flurgle

I reckon we could go a couple of weeks, longer but it would get v boring.

I bought these to add a bit of flavour to beans, pasta, mashed spuds, etc. I swear the salt and pepper tastes far nicer that the ground table stuff you usually buy and the chilli one is delicious. You can add it, just for flavour or extra for heat. You can get all three from B&M and they’re big enough to last weeks/months. The Engevita is something I use to boost my B12 and, to me, it has a slightly nutty taste. I sometimes just sprinkle it over baked beans, for flavour. I get it from the health shop.

Thanks. I love B and M!
I have never ever stockpiled before- but my husband (least panicky person in the world) didn’t laugh when I suggested it. So...

Someone said about mash further back - the Idahoan stuff is really nice - and I am incredibly fussy.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/02/2019 13:19

Emerges from cupboard. Just writing a list while I distribute food around the flat so that all my supplies of one thing are not in the same place. It would be good to fill-up all the extra stashes I have then keep the cupboard topped up.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/02/2019 13:22

We accidentally ate our Brexit Kit Kat Chunkies last night. I will have to replace those! 😂 😂

Cloudtree · 22/02/2019 15:20

I also ate the brexit kit kat chunkies. The orange ones. I didn’t even share them Blush
