Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

I'm afraid that these threads are a magnet for people desperate to reinforce their determination NOT to be affected by Brexit. Some of them see it as an act of unpatriotic betrayal, some of them are bored, some are just contrary types.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2019 22:20

The children are why I'm doing it. If it was just us two I wouldn't be as bothered.

Uptheapplesandpears · 20/02/2019 22:31

And none of them are ever remotely convincing bellini. Those who genuinely aren't bothered don't post.

BeckyButterworth · 21/02/2019 03:33

Just a suggestion for what it's worth... as potatoes are bulky to store, just for the short term during these cooler months store in the car boot?

NoWordForFluffy · 21/02/2019 06:43

It's not that cold here, so I wouldn't store stuff in my boot. And when it's sunny the car will get quite warm as well.

HeronLanyon · 21/02/2019 07:17

nowordforfluffy you could do your own local version of ASP alternative side parking which drives many in us Cities crazy moving cars for snow ploughs etc. You could chase the shade for your Brexit potato stash. Perhaps a step too far.

Image reminded me of great Seinfeld episode where George took on job of car mover for his block and had belt of hundreds of car keys - needless to say it all went very wrong.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 10:40

I agree that there is still plenty of time to get organised and that anything is better than doing nothing. Three days worth extra than normal buys you time. Build up from there.

Buy your couldn't live without stuff as well.

HeronLanyon · 21/02/2019 13:56

Just did some final shopping which included flour. Blimey the dates were awful - use by April. May need to go to the wire on that. Noticed Parmesan all sold out plus alternative milks plus certain loo rolls. Some coffee out of stock. Pasta looked thin on the ground. Hmmm looked as though there’s been quite a bit of pre buying over last few weeks!

IDoN0tCare · 21/02/2019 14:17

I was shopping late last night, in a large supermarket and got talking to a member of staff and a manager about Brexit. They were saying that they’ve definitely seen an increase in the sale of certain foods and are personally worried about the impact on supply. The conversation came about when the staff member was showing me a product and the manager asked if the trolly full of stuff was waiting to be put out. Might have been to do with the amount of trays of tins that I had on it! 😬

Bty, for anyone that’s interested, if you want chickpeas or tinned tomatoes, the ‘East End’ brand is only £1 for four tins, in Tesco. Since I will be using them as ingredients, I’m not too concerned about buying top brands, but they don't taste too bad. I would stay clear of their new ‘Stockwell’ sweet corn, though, it sticks to your teeth and is vile. It’s their own brand but tastes nothing like Tesco, naturally sweet sweetcorn.

HeronLanyon · 21/02/2019 14:25

I never use anything but easy end for cooking chickpeas. They are soft and large not the hardnlittle bullets many brands are. Although did notice last purchase was a bit under par.

IDoN0tCare · 21/02/2019 14:31

Although did notice last purchase was a bit under par. No! Don’t say that. I bought 24 tins!

bellinisurge · 21/02/2019 14:41

@IDoN0tCare , nothing a delicious home made/from a jar curry wouldn't cure. Or pasta sauce. Or a nice stew.

Cloudtree · 21/02/2019 15:08

I largely ignore flour BBE dates (bread mix is obviously different since the yeast goes.

KatyMac · 21/02/2019 15:35

I have some out off date dried yeast - am I best chucking it? I stopped baking bread for a while

Back on it now and deciding how much bread flour to buy?

Cloudtree · 21/02/2019 15:44

perhaps do a little test with the dried yeast and see what it does if you add it to water and sugar. Depends on how out of date it is.

AllTheGoodUsernamesTaken · 21/02/2019 15:53

I have alot of extra tinned food, pasta, rice, sugar, jams etc things I already use. Hoping to fill freezer with meat and vegetables. I have never cooked bread before but is it worth getting some flour and yeast or bread mix? Or is it better buying those part baked rolls that have longer shelf life than bread? Also should I be getting any uht milk, does it taste ok?

HeronLanyon · 21/02/2019 16:56

idonot they were still far nicer than any other brand I’ve used (except for bottled Spanish brand which are extremely good but expensive). Sure they’ll be good. If not I can take a few off your hands (sick of lugging tins around - we should have Rio tinto zinc stock!). Wink

HeronLanyon · 21/02/2019 16:56

cloudtree that’s helpful to know. Wasn’t sure.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 20:46

Grr to the offer on tins. More or less finished with tinned beans now. Sods law!

I am impressed by 24 tins of chickpeas tho. How many do you eat normally?

I need to get more tinned vegetables and fruit.

I am finally running out of space for much more. I may be able to squeeze a few little things in one or two more places. Got to fit in a lot more loo rolls for a start.

IDoN0tCare · 21/02/2019 22:04

I use them to make hummus, bulk out casseroles/curries, add to salads or just as a snack.

Someone suggested (not sure if it was on this thread) that you can squash the toilet rolls, so they take up less room.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 23:12

Multiple use chick peas!

I only use them for hummus. I used dried for falafel.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 23:13

I think I need to be more creative!

bukowskibabe · 21/02/2019 23:15

I feel like this is possibly completely mental.

MintyCedric · 21/02/2019 23:31

IDoNot I have only just seen this thread and am absolutely Envy of your magnetic kickboards - what a fantastic idea.

I had a reasonable stockpile in the garage but it's been somewhat depleted over the last few week as my elderly dad had a serious fall and between working full time, running around after mum and visiting him my meal planning and time/enthusiasm for food shopping has gone tits up.

When are we expecting to see the issues hit...after 29th or in the run up? I'll get paid on 22nd and am thinking of doing a month's fresh/frozen food shopping then as have limited space or budget in the interim, but worried that will be leaving it too late.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but don't forget sanpro as well as loo rolls. I was looking on the packaging of what I buy for me and DD and it all came FROM Europe.

Cloudtree · 22/02/2019 07:39

TBH I think if we get to the 22nd and we are still looking at no deal there will be a lot of worried people suddenly realising there might be issues and stocking up. The UK retailers will still be bringing stuff in but I suspect people will be buying more than normal so short supplies are possible in the couple of weeks running up to BDay. If you can buy some things now then I would.
