Westminstenders: Waiting for Sanity

We could be waiting a long time, but that's what we have to wait for as that's what the EU is waiting for.

The EU has requested we expand on our plans for 'alternative arrangements' with regard to the backstop.

We need to do so before the next HoC vote on 14th Feb. The EU see no point in shifting their position before than. And the UK will struggle to provide the info the EU want before then. So there is now some doubt as to whether the vote will go ahead as planned.

About a third of the Cabinet now believe that Brexit will have to be delayed due to legislation not being ready for exit date. However we don't have power over this and we might still exit without it.

There is no Brexit related business next week in the HoC to prevent pesky amendments. The recess has been cancelled but MPs have been told its OK to go on their ski holidays so it's just a PR stunt.

Meanwhile No Deal is in full effect as businesses trigger their exit strategy in the absence of certainty. No Deal is reality for many even if we do have a last minute deal...

We are all about to get poorer. As that's what we voted for.

I won't be the only one who recalls 'No one is talking of Leaving the Single Market'. 'Norway is doing OK.'

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 09:27

Apileof. I don’t think it will be effected as much as scare stories no. Yes there maybe a few things that don’t get through to begin with but not on the masses that the scare stories are trying to make up.
I think that some of the fresh produce will not be sent out until things are organised as it would be pointless to send a truck load of perishable goods until then.
Like everything it takes a bit of time to change something so big so of course there will be problems but not on the scale that some are guessing.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 09:28

I'm curious as to how far the thought process goes as to our trade. Mary, which countries will we be trading with after leaving with a no deal? In your opinion? Any opinions on the boarder issue with NI or Gibraltar?

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 09:28

I’ll be here as you’ll need me for one thing whether you like me or not

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 09:29

I am off as I have go at 9.30 out but back this evening

1tisILeClerc · 03/02/2019 09:29

Maryjoyce
Japan, China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, much of Europe, Russia, the USA, a couple of countries in Africa, Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff.
So you are right, I have no idea what the world looks like.

Mistigri · 03/02/2019 09:29

sometimes these things are self fulfilling prophecies.

Yes, exactly, in the same way that petrol shortages are usually caused by behavioural issues (people filling up when they don't need to) not real shortages. Any loss of confidence in banking systems will cause some people to want to hold cash, and it doesn't take many "some people" to empty cash machines, at which point people panic.

Mistigri · 03/02/2019 09:30

Can we stop feeding him/her please? Pretty please?

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 09:36

New countries. Belfast,Dublin and Cardiff
See you have fun

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 09:38
Grin Sorry, I know it feels cruel. Countries You're right. I'll stop the drive thru.
borntobequiet · 03/02/2019 09:40

Tricky to leave a parasite. Try leaving an intestinal worm, it doesn’t work.

Peregrina · 03/02/2019 09:43

Do parasites feed on themselves? After all we are part of the EU, at present at least, until the Government messes up.

Plonkysaurus · 03/02/2019 09:45

We'll be trading with Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff?

Blessed relief .

I hope both main parties split and form one centrist party. There's a momentum activist on my facebook, and her rants are quite revealing. She uses terms like moderate and centrist as if they're dirty words and is vitriolic in her assessment of anyone who doesn't worship Corbyn. It's all smears, apparently, and any labour member who is not behind Corybn 100% ought to renounce their membership.

When this is the loudest opinion people stop joining, and others leave. So we have two main parties with either dead donors or utter maniacs, and the centre disappeared from our politics in 2015. Let's have a new party then, one that's not afraid of Europe, or coalitions, or kindness.

SusanWalker · 03/02/2019 09:47

I cannot believe that election will happen.

Either we won't have left yet and will still be battling through negotiations with the Tory party in utter chaos and all the angry winners screaming betrayal.

Or we will have crashed out and the country will be in utter chaos with absolutely no doubts as to who has caused it.

I cannot see that the WA will have passed, especially now we know that the bill also has to go through. There will be too many ERG types voting against things in that bill. I just can't see it.

Either way it would be madness to call an election. Although this is TM we're talking about so I suppose it's possible.

And wtf is that advert 'a long term plan'? If there is any kind of long term plan held by this government I'd go into shock. They don't even know what's going to happen in six weeks time.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 09:47

Bugger. My escape plan has hit a large snag.
Back to the drawing board.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 09:49

Susan I dunno, I thought May was off last time but people like continuity in a crisis it seems.
That or simply the idea of JC is enough. I suspect the latter holds true more now than it did back then and will do in times of civil unrest.

Peregrina · 03/02/2019 09:49

A long term plan surely must be their plan for the day after tomorrow?

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 09:52

Perigrina Grin
I overheard someone loudly proclaim that "you can only do what you can do today so there's no point thinking on tomorrow - THAT's my thinking" yesterday. He seemed very proud of his insightful thought process and it was followed with a beam of pride.

borntobequiet · 03/02/2019 10:02

I’m getting fed up of waiting for this centrist, moderate party. They need to get their backsides in gear. It’s a complete paralysis of common sense situation right now...

PestymcPestFace · 03/02/2019 10:11

born we could infiltrate and modify the current centralist party. Like Momentum did to Labour. Make them stand on just a couple of policies. FPTP needs to go. Brexit needs sorting.

prettybird · 03/02/2019 10:12

Can you imagine holding an election when there are troops deployed to protect supermarkets and distribution points and gatherings of discontented people are being controlled? ShockConfused

Although, if she is thinking 6 June, maybe it means that she is considering an extension as she wouldn't be stupid enough to hold an election while we're already suffering the chaos of a No Deal scenario and the downward spiral towards marshal law Hmm

She wouldn't, would she? Confused

Don't answer that Wink

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/02/2019 10:14

A centrist, moderate party willing to cooperate closely with our nearest neighbours (even Remain in EU!) and with a commitment to the social contract would definitely get my vote.

Cailleach1 · 03/02/2019 10:16

Who are these people on Marr? About Simon Coveney on backstop. Quoted him as saying that Ireland and British gov't's have come together in the past, but will not this time. They interpret that as saying he is adamant British gov't has to change.

But the whole point is Irish gov't don't want British gov't to change on GFA. It is the British gov't who is happy to sacrifice the agreement in order to carry out proper coup.

JRM on Britain having selfish interest in NI. If there is a majority who want to leave UK, you betcha the will of the majority will be ignored. That is why DUP are so happy about Brexit. If it is to be a colony with them in charge, their co pirates will see them right.

Cailleach1 · 03/02/2019 10:18

I knew I shouldn't have turned it on. Lord Haw Haws across the board.

Efferlunt · 03/02/2019 10:18

Rumours in the guardian this morning of six mps breaking away to form a centrist party.

Labour vote active member remain supporters v leave voting heartlands is going to be catastrophically split no matter which way they jump isn’t it?
