Westminstenders: Waiting for Sanity

RedToothBrush · 01/02/2019 15:40

We could be waiting a long time, but that's what we have to wait for as that's what the EU is waiting for.

The EU has requested we expand on our plans for 'alternative arrangements' with regard to the backstop.

We need to do so before the next HoC vote on 14th Feb. The EU see no point in shifting their position before than. And the UK will struggle to provide the info the EU want before then. So there is now some doubt as to whether the vote will go ahead as planned.

About a third of the Cabinet now believe that Brexit will have to be delayed due to legislation not being ready for exit date. However we don't have power over this and we might still exit without it.

There is no Brexit related business next week in the HoC to prevent pesky amendments. The recess has been cancelled but MPs have been told its OK to go on their ski holidays so it's just a PR stunt.

Meanwhile No Deal is in full effect as businesses trigger their exit strategy in the absence of certainty. No Deal is reality for many even if we do have a last minute deal...

We are all about to get poorer. As that's what we voted for.

Wrt 'war reparations' [sic]

Kawczynski
(1) doesn't understand the difference between war reparations and debt, and
(2) doesn't understand that it was a hard bargain driven by FDR that created that debt under the terms of Lend Lease.

Presumably also the implication of the deal - that the 'special relationship' doesn't mean squat when push comes to shove, and that any trade agreement with the US will result in a massive advantage for the US - is completely lost on him.

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/02/2019 20:06

I wonder just how many lurkers Maryjoyce is managing to convert to her way of thinking with her blinding rhetoric?

We're 55 days from crashing out - it seems the inevitable outcome - so why the sudden stench of desperation from a true beleaver? 55 days and you get what you want. Our talking about it online changes nothing. You don't like us talking - block the thread. You've apparently not noticed these threads for the past almost 3 years - why let it bother you now?

I assure you - the amount of slurry produced and not got rid of will be exactly the same whether randoms on the internet discuss it or not. But you voted for slurry - so rejoice. Your day is at hand.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 20:06

You don't eat fruit & veg either ?

The UK depends on exports, to be able to import food, medicines, raw materials & components that industry needs

You know the UK produces only about 50% of its own food ?
30% comes from the EU, most of our fruit & veg,
20% comes from the rest of the world

mathanxiety · 02/02/2019 20:07

And maybe
(3) he isn't aware that some of the repayments went to Canada, with obvious implications wrt the Commonwealth and self interest that similarly went unnoticed.

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 20:09

What’s to believe ? No idea what you are talking about

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 20:09

Prominent leavers like Farage, Hannan, Patterson were talking about wanting to be like rich Norway,
saying only an idiot would want to leave the Single Market

.... then right after the ref, suddenly they switched and demanded the Uk become idiots

mathanxiety · 02/02/2019 20:09

MaryJoyce, when you say 'their rules', are you aware that the UK had an equal say in making EU rules along with all the other members, and that actually the UK had many opt outs that it successfully negotiated over the years?

What are the worst EU rules, in your opinion, the ones that really get your goat - give a few examples.

Tanith · 02/02/2019 20:09

"It was always a recipe for disaster sending people that voted to stay to implement a leave deal."

David Davis voted Leave. He spent the longest time as Brexit Secretary.

Remind me again what he achieved in that time?

(PS Has anyone mentioned Y2K yet, btw?)
(PPS Has the Slimy Gove been sighted recently?)

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 20:09

Ignorance is bliss, hey ?

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 20:11

I’m happy to wait to buy fruit and veg that’s in season instead of rubbish grown in greenhouses in the Netherlands etc.
Once we have deals with other country’s well have decent fruit and veg that tastes as it should do in happy to wait.
I don’t need strawberries in January

taleforthetimebeing · 02/02/2019 20:12

Can anyone explain how the Streatham Labour voting for One Member One Vote affects Chuka. I see it all over Twitter but not sure I understand. Is it because he is more Centrist and this win benefits the more left leaning and they will be able to push him out. Sorry if answered or discussed elsewhere....

StoorieHoose · 02/02/2019 20:13

Nobody is forcing you to buy out of season fruit MaryJoyce. Hardly a reason to vote leave is it?

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 20:15

May first appointed 3 hard Brexiters:

Liam Fox - for WTO and Trade deals outside the EU
Boris Johnson - foreign Secretary
David Davis - Brexit Sec

Davis originally said it would be the easiest trade deal in history, then later said Brexit was more complicated than then the moon landings

Too much hard work for him. Too complicated
Davis didn't bother to turn up to meetings with Barnier, literally only managed 4 hours the last 6 months he was Minister

May replaced him with another hard Brexiter, Dominic Raab
who admitted after a few months that he hadn't realised that 30% of our food came from the EU, almost all via Dover
he didn't know the basics about Brexit, 2 years after the referendum

So May had to finally take over herself, or we'd have no bloody deal at all.

FishesaPlenty · 02/02/2019 20:16

If only these other countries were a bit closer so that those tomatoes weren't rotten when they arrive.

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 20:19

It's like an incoherent cry for help. A riled incoherent cry for help.

But also, an annoying derailment.

I'd quite like to return to regular thread conversation now. Things like, do we think that Nissan really is going to shelve its plans to build the new X-trail in Sunderland, and what impact is that going to have on jobs? And things like, is Barclays moving £170bn out of the UK going to have any effect on the British economy, was that money ever effectively in the economy in the first place?

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 20:20

Mary what makes you think you will be in the 60%?

Oh and what countries don't we have trade deals with now?

Have you researched bananas?
Don't blame the EU (due to a mad colonial past by many EU states we should have glorious banana supplies) look to the US and their trade deals. We have already been had.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 20:21

Maryjoyce The UK only produces 50% of its food
There isn't the British veg & fruit to replace what we get from the EU

Also, the EU workers that picked what we do grow are leaving by the thousand
So a lot is rotting in the fields

There may be plenty of British carrots etc now , but not later if everyone wants carrots because there is no EU veg

Increasing crops & animals takes time:

If Britain wanted to grown its own crops, it should have found the extra land, prepared it, trained the workers and planted the crops - so started months ago

In the case of meat, the extra animals we need to eat from April should have been conceived 2 years ago

borntobequiet · 02/02/2019 20:22

If only we didn’t already have deals with all these other countries via our EU membership. Very good deals, that we haven’t a hope of bettering on our own.

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 20:22

Do we think that Nissan really is going to shelve its plans to build the new X-trail in Sunderland?

YES, what else would they do in the face of such uncertainty?

pointythings · 02/02/2019 20:24

Do we think MaryJoyce is WhollyFather's DW? Grin.

And would someone please explain the Hungry Gap to our newfound expert?

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 20:25

Do we think MaryJoyce is WhollyFather's DW?

OMG Shock that would explain so much! Although then I'm not sure I would be teetotal if I were her Grin

StoorieHoose · 02/02/2019 20:26

Dr Paul Monaghan (twitter)

Revealed today that UKGov is refusing to fund the deployment of up to 400 Scottish police officers to deal with the consequences of Brexit, despite funding similar emergency deployment in England and the north of Ireland.

UKGov already owes Police Scotland £125 million in VAT.

——-

Estimated cost to Police Scotland that the Gov should be paying is £18 million. I hope ScotGov tell UKGov to piss off

mrslaughan · 02/02/2019 20:26

@Maryjoyce - startling intelligent argument (incase you don't get it - it's not) - you have just spun out rhetoric not supported by FACTS......

In a democracy everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Plus if you are so confident the country is still leave - out your money where you mouth is and back a PV...... oh no you won't will you, or have not you not realise that enough oldies have died off that you wouldn't get the same result? That's a combination of demographics and statistics- do you want a definition of those?

IrenetheQuaint · 02/02/2019 20:28

I don't understand why you're all being so mean to Mary. Personally I'm delighted to find someone who shares my love of turnips Grin

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 20:28

So your an expert in farming now you ought to be in government as it was education you were expert in last week.
Never mind I have things to do
