I was thinking today as I handed over money to our window cleaner, if DH lost his job what would we cut back on and how that might impact little businesses. So I thought I would start a list

Estate agents - people won't want to sell if they don't need to, potential for negative equity.

Trades related to house building and home improvement, if you have to tighten your purse strings you will live with that kitchen/bathroom/lack of space.

Hair and beauty

Gym membership/personal trainers

Private podiatry/sports massage/ physio/ therapy etc

Dog walkers

Nursery/childminders

Take away's /restaurants / pubs / clubs

Window cleaners

Car valeters

Holiday companies - areas which rely on tourism

Upper end food and drink producers, if you are made redundant that bottle of Co-ops own gin will hit the spot as well as a posh one ! £4 in Morrisons buys you a snazzy travel mug to make your own coffee in

Disclaimer : DH and I actually only use a window cleaner from the list.

I think that especially most farmers will be hit as the UK govt may allow import of cheap poor quality food from abroad (non EU).

Kazzyhoward · 06/02/2019 11:59

This week alone I've had 6 stockists in London who have been placing orders every month for more than a year each email me to inform me that, until we know what is actually going to happen, they won't be placing anymore orders and will simply be running on a sale or return basis with local suppliers

Prepare for the rush of orders from them when they realise that there are still plenty of customers but they've run out of stock!

Like they already do?? One of my clients is in food production (sandwiches) and they already buy frozen chicken strips and boiled/shelled eggs in huge quantities from the Far East!

It’s going to be a long and nasty depression

Correction: One possibility is a long and nasty depression. Other possibilities are also available depending upon the make/model of crystal ball you're using!

Employment lawyers will be fine
When Brexit kicks in we will see the gradual erosion of worker’s rights
European law is stringent in its protection of Employess. Uk domestic law is not as stringent.

My cousin will lose his jobs in March, because the company he works for is relocating to Europe.
Sad times

SisterOfDonFrancisco · 06/02/2019 12:45

Farmers are still mainly supporting brexit even though they realise the effects of it to their business. This at least according to a poll amongst readers of a farming magazine/website. So I'd draw a conclusion from it that there are plenty of brexiteers willing to deal with the consequences, even if it means loss of their own business.

SleepDeprivedCabbageBrain · 06/02/2019 12:47

My DH business has already been profoundly affected by the stall in marketing spending. Much funding from my industry comes from the EU. I feel so scared. We are expecting to have to move out of the country in the event of a major recession. We'd both rather keep on doing the same jobs somewhere else than try to reskill.

Charities may be hit by a decrease in donations coupled with an increased need for their services.

MaccaPacca81 · 06/02/2019 15:27

I work in advertising/publishing. Our European clients are seriously cutting back their UK spend.

WhatHaveIFound · 06/02/2019 15:34

I had a major client put a hold on all work for the first quarter of this year whilst they see what happens. As a result we've had to cut staff hours.

EdwinH · 06/02/2019 16:08

All of them will, bar a handful of exceptions (customs agents and lawyers should do well out of Brexit).

Here's a loooong Twitter thread I posted with over 200 examples of real-world Brexit consequences. Although many of the firms impacted are in the financial sector, overall it's a pretty broad church...

Once Raab, Patel and Truss get their shredders working and trash the UK laws regarding employment rights there won't be any work for employment lawyers to do. If there are no laws, who requires lawyers? See also Import Standards, Consumer Protection and Immigration Laws

I have built a successful small business over the last decade, largely relying on selling my home made products via e commerce. I sell lots to EU customers. I'm very concerned they will be slapped with customs charges if they buy my products (looking highly likely) and won't buy from me any more. I might sound small but I pay our mortgage and all bills with my earnings. Really angry that what I have worked so hard to build up may be wrecked. A few bad months will finish me.

fikel · 06/02/2019 18:37

We’ve already taken a massive hit, as an Italian restaurant wholesale prices with some products have tripled. Unfortunately it’s not something you can pass on to your customer

Bowchicawowow · 06/02/2019 18:52

We need to vote in a Labour Government to make sure we get sufficient employment laws to plug the gap we ‘ll having after leaving the EU.

namechanger234 · 07/02/2019 07:35

I'm a lawyer

We were really busy in the recession as businesses were laying people off and needed advice

We are really busy now for the same reason 🙁 and also immigration issues and likely to get busier

So I'm pretty safe

Feel for everyone else though

Kazzyhoward · 07/02/2019 08:02

With Corbyn, we won't need employment laws - we'll all be unemployed.

Bowchicawowow · 07/02/2019 08:08

Nice but of scaremongering there kazzyhoward.

Bowchicawowow · 07/02/2019 08:08

Bit not but.

Boom76 · 07/02/2019 08:16

My company gets materials from Italy, Denmark etc and we also send packages to Europe. They are not worried at all, in fact we are expanding what we do in Europe

Kazzyhoward · 07/02/2019 09:54

No worse that the almost end of the world scenarios from the remoaners.

FishesaPlenty · 07/02/2019 10:06

What gap? Any EU employment laws which apply to us are already incorporated into UK law. Nothing changes unless a future UK government changes it.

lonelyplanetmum · 07/02/2019 11:27

There is no doubt the current government would like less employee rights.

The high level of tribunal fees suddenly introduced between 2013 and 2017 was actually quite shocking. Fees were introduced to prevent employees exercising their rights. No doubt. In the end the fees were found to be unlawful but the intention to curtail employees' rights was clear.

That was before the fuck business trend gained momentum of course.

It's a bit confusing as now as overall policy seems to be fuck both employees and employers?!

RetroFair · 08/02/2019 07:08

DH and I both work in construction related fields and I'm worried as construction is normally one of the first and quickest to suffer in a downturn. I think DH is more at risk than me but I don't earn enough to single handily support all our current level of outgoings. As per a previous post I'd prioritise education for our DC (school fees) but we have a finite amount of modest savings so this is not sustainable for long.
