Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

I did a Tesco online order yesterday as they sent a very competitive voucher, and couldn't even order any tinned mandarins! I do quite like them when I feel in the mood, every once in a while tinned hits a spot that fresh doesn't. But people are obviously stocking up on them.

It will be interesting to see how much of the tinned stuff actually gets delivered. I don't usually use online shopping that much and the only tins I've ordered are a couple of ham and of pineapple. Let's see how that goes!

WaxMyBalls · 05/02/2019 09:58

What do others think of the tactic of focusing less on tinned and dried stuff and thinking more about stocking up on things where price and/or quality are likely to become less favourable? I had been thinking about aiming for a month's food buffer, so amount was the priority, but now am sort of reframing what I want to do.

ElenadeClermont · 05/02/2019 10:19

wax I have dry food stocked up, but I also stocked upon stuff that I like a superior European brand of.

cloudtree · 05/02/2019 10:44

I have to say though wax I already have more than a month of everyday food items and so its not that I would only have a stash of "nice to haves"

I don't have enough faith in anything at the moment to do that.

PerverseConverse · 05/02/2019 10:50

I'm continuing to prep as before until there's a definite plan in place for food and medicines coming over. Waived through isn't going to solve everything with supply.

I'm still replenishing for the new year / after spring clean tbh.

Also I have shifted anyway to shopping less often while also having voracious teens at home. I'm reorganising my space in the kitchen to get rid of unused clutter and then to stock up with food and other consumables. It will all be eaten that's for sure..

I've picked up some good ideas on this thread, thanks.

BlackeyedGruesome · 05/02/2019 11:46

coffee and coke are on my list of must have the real thing. I have stocked up on the brand specific things I like as I have tried substitutes and they do not cut it.

i will stock up on tinned fruit just in case, we like tinned fruit as a treat anyway, or the food bank will benefit.

in other news: the children ate the tinned carrots with no question.

morrisons value carrots, slightly sweet, very soft, almost overcooked. any other recommendations?

WaxMyBalls · 05/02/2019 12:03

Oh I'll certainly have a month's worth by late March, well on the way to that now. More than that of most toiletries too. It's just what the month's worth of food will look like, if that makes sense. I do plan to continue batch cooking and have ordered some of the zippered bags mentioned upthread.

cloudtree · 05/02/2019 12:08

News in this house is that the bulk lasagne stack in the chest freezer which was looking very nice at the weekend after the marathon cooking session is now one short...

DH cannot be trusted with home made lasagne Hmm

ElenadeClermont · 05/02/2019 12:10

@cloudtree Homemade lasagne. Yum! I'll ask DH to cook some.

Miljah · 05/02/2019 13:00

Wine.

I am a cheap drunk Grin

Asda wine boxes or same-price-per litre Aldi bottles?

I like both equally, so it's storage and longevity I'm looking for!

Thanks, anyone who can advise!

PerverseConverse · 05/02/2019 13:14

I've just had reheated macaroni cheese for lunch. I love pasta!

I'm craving chocolate lately. I'm wondering if subconsciously I'm getting it in now because I won't have access to as much post brexitWink

BlackeyedGruesome · 05/02/2019 13:20

I am hiding chocolate at the back of the cupboard, out of sight of me and the children, one of whom can not be trusted.

I have their easter eggs in as well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2019 13:31

Easter eggs is actually a pretty good idea, though I presume they are already over here ready to keep replenishing shelves.

hipposarerad · 05/02/2019 13:53

Aldi are doing mixed crates of wine for online delivery and their spirits are reasonably priced. So I can get wankered enough not to give a shit whilst I go to hell in a handbasket.

Still no bastard tinned steam puds in Asda. Fucking hypocrites in this shit hole town AngryGrin

WaxMyBalls · 05/02/2019 13:56

I've got Easter eggs already too! Grabbed a couple last week so that if it came to it, the kids would still be able to celebrate. I actually meant to post that on here and forgot, so glad someone else has.

hipposarerad · 05/02/2019 14:08

Asda Easter eggs are a pound a pop, they've got them just inside the front door... Next to the pallets-full of tinned tuna multi packs.

But nobody's stockpiling, of course

PerverseConverse · 05/02/2019 14:10

Our Asda hasn't got them in yet but I'll be getting them as soon as it does!

OP posts:
ElenadeClermont · 05/02/2019 14:18

We still have last year's Easter eggs. The not vet nice ones. Obviously.

wowfudge · 05/02/2019 14:23

Not environmentally friendly but I stocked up on ziplock bags for freezing things flat-ish and getting more in the freezer. I've got bread flour ordered and yeast as far less bulky than buying and freezing bread and we don't eat a huge amount of it anyway. Butter can be frozen, as can hard cheese.

cloudtree · 05/02/2019 14:27

Tesco are doing Nestle medium easter eggs half price this week. 75p

I know its Nestle and MN regard them as evil but..brexit zombies

bagpiss · 05/02/2019 14:57

@VanillaSugarr Bad wine is very nice if mulled 😁👍🍷

hipposarerad · 05/02/2019 16:19

I know there's an emphasis on dry, tinned and long life goods. But I got 2x750g packs reduced price diced beef in the yellow sticker fridge today. I've divided them between 4 bags and frozen them flat. I always keep an eye on the reduced meat section - as long as things are frozen on day of purchase and cooked on the day they're thawed job's a good 'un.

wowfudge · 05/02/2019 19:09

We get a lot of imported fruit and veg here. If you have the freezer space it can be cheaper to buy fresh veg than frozen, prepare it, blanch it in boiling water then open freeze it (so it doesn't stick together) then bag it up into portions.

blibblibs · 05/02/2019 20:28

I ended up in asda today, which isn't a shop I'm in often and lots of shelf stable stuff was on offer. We now have 17 pot noodles! Although DH does eat them anyhow so he's sorted for lunches.
He rolls his eyes but is properly on board now, didn't even flinch when 18 jars of coffee arrived from amazon today.
Apart from a few baking supplies my cupboards are done I think so moving on to the freezer next week and the wine.
