Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Thank you Dramaticmuch! Haven't used any of those before so good to know. Smile

AutumnCrow · 03/02/2019 21:49

I've bought a tin of hamburgers. A.Tin.Of.Hamburgers.

The last time I had one of those was school dinners circa 1978, with tinned peas and packet mash. So yes, if I play Blondie in the background I can recreate that. Atomic

cloudtree · 03/02/2019 22:41

Be a bit careful with Approved Foods. You can get some bargains but it’s mainly very short dated or out of date stock so some things need to be eaten very quickly. Obviously tins and jars are fine but you can easily find yourself with 100 bags of pickled onion monster munch that were bbe last August and which need eating immediately!

NoWordForFluffy · 04/02/2019 06:44

I don't think that Approved Food is much (if any) cheaper than places like Home Bargains / Farmfoods / Poundstretcher either.

Dramaticmuch · 04/02/2019 07:09

Approved Foods aren't as cheap as they used to be, and yes, be careful with dates. I have been using Clearance XL and Cut Price Barry's more than Approved Foods last year. Clearance XL currently have French's mustard for 1p a bottle, and last year had marigold bouillon for 1p a tub, which we're still using and still tastes fine.

Re: flat breads, you can make a delicious kind of no-yeast Italian flat bread called piadina... just mix/knead flour, water, salt and olive oil (google for quantities). Leave to rest, divide into balls, roll out into a circle, preheat a frying pan, griddle each one until there's a few lightly scorched patches on each side.

“I don’t think people will lose their jobs,” he says. “In my opinion it was on the cards to start with. It’s just scaremongering. I think they’re hedging their bets and waiting to find out about tariffs. They are just playing it out. I think Nissan will do anything to get more money from the government.

“They keep a lot of people around here in employment. It’s so central to the area that the government will probably subsidise any tariffs Nissan should be subjected to.”

Are these people living in the same universe as I do?! The Tories will do everything in their power to keep Sunderland afloat?!

ElenadeClermont · 04/02/2019 09:10

Sorry, wrong thread.

AntheaGreenfern · 04/02/2019 09:14

I agree that's naive.

However Is the diesel not coming to Sunderland / Europe not more to do with it being, like, diesel which has a government target in its back?

MeadowHay · 04/02/2019 10:16

Clermont One of my parents is from Sunderland and most of their relatives still live there. A few of them have worked for Nissan in the past, and a few of them still work for Nissan. The vast majority of my parent's family voted leave, including notably all of the past and previous employees of Nissan Confused. It beggars belief.

MeadowHay · 04/02/2019 10:17

Sorry, past and current employees of Nissan!

WaxMyBalls · 04/02/2019 11:28

I had a chat with our local grocer this morning. She's aware that people are starting to stockpile, which is interesting given that she mostly sells fresh produce and the non-fresh stuff is just pulses and some powdered spices. I guess customers have been talking to her about it. She's also of the view that the supply chain disruption will take a couple of months to calm down following a no deal. And she's dealing at the moment with the fallout from the snow last week, so has some idea what supply chain disruption looks like and how it affects availability.

Was that freezing stuff in food bags instead of tubs? I was thinking to try that but not sure how it works. Does it not leak out? How do you seal it?

PerverseConverse · 04/02/2019 13:11

@WaxMyBalls I use Bacofoil Zipper bags. Small ones hold 1-2 portions of soup. Once you've put the portion in, squeeze out the air, zip most of the way then lie on its side and carefully flatten and squeeze out any remaining air. Close completely and flatten out again so the contents are evened out. Place on a baking tray in the freezer until frozen then remove the tray. It's a great space saver.

Waves at @MeadowHay. We live in the North East.

WaxMyBalls · 04/02/2019 13:45

Cheers. Would it work for bolognese, daal etc? I guess they freeze pretty similarly to soup.

PerverseConverse · 04/02/2019 14:25

I've got lentil Dahl and lentil soup stored like that and pasta sauce too. Anything you can get flat really.

I'm planning to do a freezer audit today. I want to maximise space for fruit and veg and make some space for milk and cheese. Also bread products- perhaps wraps because they don't take up much space. Or maybe I should just try making my own. I'm a confident cook but have never ventured into bread.

blibblibs · 04/02/2019 17:29

I'm a very basic cook & baker but I must say the bread I made a the weekend was a success.
Maybe a tad undercooked but lovely none the less. Practice makes perfect as my DM would say. So that's going to be my positive from all this brexit shite, I'm learning to make bread!!
Did some more forward purchasing today but still feeling woefully behind from where I'd like to be.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/02/2019 17:50

The test loaf I made lasted about an hour. It was rather nice!

Wolfcub · 04/02/2019 18:00

Those baking their own bread for the first time it’s worth watching some Richard Bertinet you tube videos for good kneading and shaping technicques. Putting a “spine” in your load if you aren’t making it in a tin really does make a difference

cloudtree · 04/02/2019 18:01

Stopped off at a morrisons on the way back today. Not a Simpsons tinned steam pudding in sight Sad Empty shelves where they should have been.

They did however have ainsley flavoured cous cous on offer. The woman on the till asked me if I liked cous cous and I just said "brexit". She said lots of people are stocking up.

elfycat · 04/02/2019 18:25

Added savoury rice packets x4 today. We also had x2 for a snack.

Decided to get a big bottle of gaviscon in case things go carb-shaped.

Also got a can of jackfruit, but that's to try out now. I'm looking to expand on veggie meals in any case.

Big box of icing sugar, long-date pretty sprinkles and flour. 4 packs of coffee beans. If the country goes down, I'm going down with pretty iced biscuits, and Baileys in naice coffee. hence the gaviscon
